I love the watercolor with the gelli plate. I’ll have to try this technique. How did you clean the gesso and matte medium off of the plate?
@marshavalk

Hi Selina! Most of the gesso and matte medium pulls off with the print. If needed you can clean the plate just like you would after printing with regular acrylic paint.

Hmmm...were there a lot of negative comments of only a few? the comments were valid actually and they are very expensive and not easy to get and are in particular sizes which I understand but they don't suit the size papers that are made all over the world so that always seemed weird to me -why make a plate that is too small for regular sized paper?> it means you're trimming every page and if you make books as I do, that's a heck of a lot of pages to trim. :-) So, it depends on what each person's issue is as to whether they have a comment. Mine wasn't negative, and I found out that although I can't find them here in Australia, they have started making a 9x12 yayayayay, of course for me to get it here would cost me an arm and a leg but at least they've produced a product that suits page sizes.
@ludouglas1
@ludouglas1 5 жыл бұрын
oh and also...they DID use $$$$$ equipment. if you don't own a die cut machine, the cost of them here in Aust is around $300! So that's what people were meaning. you're lucky if you have one

Hi @@ludouglas1! I'm lucky indeed because I was able to buy my die cut machine (the one you see in the video) second hand. They are just as expensive in Europe. You do not need one for gel printing though!

This was fun to watch and so easy to do. I never thought of using anything other than acrylic point on my gelli paint. What about oil pastels, the old fashion pastels, not the creamy pan pastels available today? 👍🏼 Great job❣️
@marshavalk
@marshavalk 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Abbie! Yes, oil pastels are one of my favourites to work with. I don't apply them to the plate though, but I use them as a mark maker just like stamps and stencils. There's a video on that technique here on the channel. I've called it 'crayon resist' and it works wonderfully with oil pastels!

Will the dried substrates, gesso and matt medium, wash off the plate? My instinct says that these are acrylic media and once dried are permanent.
@stephey

When I used the clear gesso and matte medium and pulled the final print, there were spots that appeared dull, like a slight “matte film”. Is this because I used too much of the gesso and matte medium? Also, my heavy weight printing paper tore on the edges as well. Hmm….

Usually when watercolor is applied to the plate, it will bead up. (She didn’t use any ground for the sky) watch video again....see how it beads up compared to the paint she applied to the gesso/matte medium? If you use a base coat on the plate (using gesso, matte medium) you will be able to actually paint with the watercolors, and get a better print. Just helps with achieving authentic watercolor look for the print. Hope you give it a try! 😊

I’m wondering the same thing- why did she need to use both of those, instead of just one of them?
@mydogeatspuke
@mydogeatspuke 2 жыл бұрын
It looks like the gesso has a more textured finish compared to the matte medium, which is smooth, although why you would go to all that trouble when other types of paint can create the same textures is beyond me. It's explained that the mediums come off the "gelli" (not sure why we need to make up new words for things) and remain on the paper, with the paint between the two, so you couldn't alter the paint once it's been "printed" anyway which was presumably why watercolour was used in the first place rather than more permanent kinds of paint. The whole thing seems kind of pointless to me either way though.

I get so nervous when stuff dries on the plate! What’s the best way to clean? I’m a tidy person who loves messy crafts lol it’s a curse.
@marshavalk
@marshavalk 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle! I use a damp cloth or a baby wipe. If that doesn't work you can use baby oil, soap and water or handsanitiser. If you dare, you can also roll out a thicker layer of paint on top of the 'dirty' plate, place a sheet of paper on top and then let that sit overnight and then pull a print. That will usually pull everything off too!
@pak7417
@pak7417 5 жыл бұрын
Please don't be nervous about something drying on your plates! I never clean any of my plates... I handpainted daises on a round plate the other day and let it dry for 24 hours. It pulled beautifully with a thin coat of Amsterdam acrylic paint. It's also a great way to get texture on your prints and that grunge look so many people love. In the end, everything washes off fairly easily. It's fun to experiment and play!

25 thumbs down? It's a shame they couldn't be bothered to explain why they didn't like the video. I saw the 3(?) negative comments, and it just shows that those commenters can't think out of the box. As previous posters have said, gel plates can be homemade, there are loads of videos on here showing how, children's watercolour sets are very cheap, stencils can be made from paper (use that junk mail that comes through your postbox) using scissors or a craft knife to cut them, and look on KZbin for instructions on how to make your own gesso,. Gesso doesn't need to be expensive. When I first started making art, I bought a 500ml tub for £5, from a chain store here in the UK called The Works, who sell a lot of cheap art and craft supplies. I wonder if watered down (50'50) PVA glue could be used instead of matt medium? Experiment! It's not rocket science. Marsha, thanks for this, it's actually very helpful. I sometimes use matt medium as a base on the gel plate when using water soluble mediums, to stop them from reactivating when adding more wet mediums on the pulled print, but I haven't used gesso. I don't think the criteria for down voting a creative video should be whether or not you already own the materials. If you don't own something is not the artist's fault.
@coveredinpaint7318
@coveredinpaint7318 5 жыл бұрын
I never said it was. People shouldn't down vote a video simply because they don't have the materials. As you say, it's not the artist's fault. Either move on, or think about what materials you do have, that could be substituted.

I do find inspiration in many of the gelli videos and I did state that this is lovely, which it is. I was merely pointing out that the other materials used, that not everyone has in their back pocket, amount to a lot of money, over $150 to be honest. Yes, it is a terrific jumping off point for sure and inspiring.
@Zoomfreaky
@Zoomfreaky 5 жыл бұрын
@@NeverHopelessbyElizabeth Be creative...a die cutting machine you don't need. You can cut a stencil out with scissors and use regular printing paper (just let it dry real well between pulls). Watercolors you can use the kids stuff. Just as much fun, doesn't cost much. Do you have art friends? See if they have the stuff you need, so you can swop or have a printing party? Gesso doesn't have to be very expensive. Matt medium is so handy for so much stuff like collage and bookbinding. Have fun!

I know your job is to sell product but I don't think the end result was worth it. I wish there was a paper sized gelli plate made. 10x9 isn't any kind of paper for most of us. It leaves gaps around the edge so using letter or A4 paper doesn't work. All of the sizes for the gelli plates don't match standard paper sizes which is a shame. And here in Australia, they are so so expensive.
@glorioskiola
@glorioskiola 5 жыл бұрын
Linda Douglas you can make your own gelli plate. Look in youtube for DYI gelly plate. Or you could use a silicone craft mat in place of a gelly plate. There are other alternatives. Again, look in youtube for printing without a gelly plate.

Hi Linda! Did you know there is a 9" x 12" Gelli® Printing Plate too? It fits an entire A4 or Letter sized paper without the gaps around edges you mention! I usually like the white trim around the edges (sorry), so in this case I used paper from a standard watercolour pad that was 9.5” x 12”.
@TheKazadoodle
@TheKazadoodle 5 жыл бұрын
I live in Australia and have purchased quite a few different gelli plate sizes, I wait for the sales. I don't mind the prints having the white border, if it bothers me, I trim them off and the problem is solved. As for the end result not being worth it, maybe not for you but I'm sure Marsha had a ton of fun with it, and in the end, that's what matters.
