I'm a Gel Press super fan. I use Gelli Arts sometimes, but my GO TO plate brand is Gel Press. I own Speedball plates; I use them ONLY with inks (particularly Akua Printing inks). Thank you for this helpful video! WELL DONE!

The Speedball plate is a gel plate but it works with INKS, like Akua soy-based inks (which are marvelously pigmented professional inks that are easy to clean up with water) and is used for monotypes. It’s not meant for use with acrylics. Akua inks are “open” inks that don’t dry until they are on the paper.

I wish I had been advised to use water-based inks with the Speedball plate before my disasterous experiences using acrylics almost made me abandon the idea of making prints in this way. Thank you so much for this video!

The comparison was great. I appreciate a non-fussy comparison that gets to the heart of the products. I was noticing at the end, when you put all three prints down that it looked as though there was a "ghost" of a previous print (a face) on the Speedball (stickiest and most visible prior ghost), Gel Press (less sticky and fainter ghost) and no ghost on the Gelli. Very interesting, and it made the Speedball one very cool with the double image. thank you!

My first plate was a speed ball plate. I had nothing but problems using it with acrylics. It works well with the speed ball Block printing ink but then it's hard to do anything with the prints because the ink is water soluble. I had no idea that it was different than other plates. Since then I have bought the gel press ones and I am much happier with them.

I have all 3, but I only use my speedball plate as a paint pallete now as I also had difficulty with paper sticking to it. My paper usually did get glued and I would have to pick it off in pieces. I did try it with the screen printing ink a few times and that worked much better, especially on fabric. The screen printing ink takes forever to dry on paper. I just love you and your channel!

Hi Nitsa. I have two Gel Press printing plates which work just fine and another unbranded plate which does not lift off at all with acrylic paint. Hi Nitsa. Great video. A question - how long do you leave the heavy book on the gel plate before you remove it and pull the print? Do you find it a necessary step? I finally received my laser print photocopies, so I am going to begin photo transfers. Best wishes from Karmiel where it is very hot and humid. Avram
@NitsaCreativeStudio

Hi Avram from Karmiel, placing a heavy book is not a necessary step at all, just helps with a better bond which can be achieved by placing more pressure with a clean brayer. I leave the book on the gel plate just for a couple of minutes. Nitsa from Los Angeles, where is quite pleasant.

I have a Gelli arts , well actually 2 plates, but notice the plates are a lot more expensive than the gel press where I am. Quite high price. Your results seem very similar. I would like to be able to do bigger prints and am thinking I would like a second 8x10, so would like to know if one of these plates is thicker than the other so If I put two different make together one would be higher than the other. If I wanted even larger single plate then the difference in price rises very steeply. Do you think the any potential difference in plate height is negligible ? I loved this video and know which one I definitely will not be purchasing…

Hi Nitsa. Thank you for this video. I just bought and tested the Speedball with acrylics , i was disapointed for my first experience.. It did not work at all, paper stics on the plate and you have to tear it to remove it if it dryes a bit, and if it doesn't dry nothing happens.. No transfert of image in both cases.. I tryed with both, printed paper and the magazine paper. Do you think that there is another reason that it doesn't worked for me ? Thank you

Thanks for the video. I'm confused on 1 aspect of your conclusion. At the end, you say the speedball has the least definition, but out of all 3, it is the only one that shows an eye in the background, that is very faint in the gel press, & almost non-existant in the gelli. So I don't understand your basis for saying which plate gives more definition; based on this huge glaring detail, I would say the Speedball actually gave the most definition?? Thanks for your help. I am trying to learn this technique, & appreciate your lessons & input. Blessings.

Hi, I see what you're saying but if you look at the begining of the video at the original photo I transferred, there's no "eye in the sky" in the original photo. Not sure how it ended in the final Speedball print, maybe it was some left-over paint from a previous printing session. I hope it makes sense :) Thank you for your comment 🤗

Thanks so much for your review. I am new to gelli plates, but am enamored with the technique and results. I learned on a speedball gelli plate (a couple of weeks ago😆). I was taught to 'warm' the plate up by taking two or more single layer pulls. Then I can layer my acrylics with or without texture (s) for a more dramatic pull. I have to wait until the paper is dry. And I need to use a paper that is thicker than printer paper (which I can use for the single pulls), printmaking paper works fairly good. Yes, I'm using assorted acrylics on the Speedball. Not knowing any difference, I ordered two smaller gelli plates: Gel Press and Gelli Arts. They work fine with a single coat of acrylic paint. But if I apply even one more coat of paint the first coat (dry) lifts off in patches. I have to know which plate I'm working with and align my expectations 🙃. I love my Speedball best. But am always worried I'll tear the paper whilst pealing it off the plate. I wish someone would come up with an in between plate honesty! Sorry for the lengthy post.
