All due respect to Bruce Campbell's acting abilities and his absolutely majestic chin, the reason he became the face of the franchise is that he's the director's best friend. They basically helped each other become famous. Two things you'll find in practically every Sam Raimi movie are Campbell, and Sam's Oldsmobile Delta 88. The car they drove in this movie, and Evil Dead 2, Uncle Ben even drove it in Spider-Man, decades later.

This is one of the best horror films ever made. The kids are missing out.

Any video I watch solo can still be watched by my guys. Don't be surprise if we do a group reaction to this movie with them.

Of course I saw this as a kid as a rental, and I had the great joy to see Evil Dead 2 in the theater.

In Germany the movie was on the "Index List". It means a movie that's not fully banned, but it's one step beyond the "18+" rating. Meaning: A normal "18+" movie can stand in the shelf of a video store, but rental to minors is illegal. An indexed movie is considered to be really, REALLY not child safe. Like hardcore prawn movies it's illegal to display them in a room that kids can get in to. It's forbidden to advertise indexed media. You can't sell it by mail, because the seller MUST make sure the customer is a grown up. (with the internet being a thing nowadays the whole concept became quite useless). All together it was something similar to the "Video Nasties" in the UK back then. So what did Kraut teenagers like me do? Well, I got really lucky, because the son of a friend of my father (who happened to be a police officer where I lived ^^ - the friend of my father) knew people who knew people. Someone would get a movie abroad and copy it - and that copy was copied and so forth - so that I, at the age of 13 or so, got access to a pretty much complete collection of the goriest horror movies that existed back then. Some of them, back then, were actually still scary to me, today they kinda fill me with a sense of weird nostalgia. With many it's when you see a new digital copy a lot of the special effects work suddenly becomes really obvious. You see where masks end and things like that.

The car in the movie is Sam Raimi's car. If you watch his other movies you'll see it show up in all of them at some point. Not just the Evil Dead movies. It's part of his trademark. Some director like to have camo's (Hitchcock for example) Sam uses his car as the camo. As a kid watching this on video it was one of the few movies to make me squirm. not from the demons, but that pencil in the leg bit gets me every time. I guess because it's more believable to me at least. Enjoy the franchise.

Love this movie, but just so you know Evil Dead II is an odd sequel and remake at the same time, more remake than sequel, so don't get confused when you watch it. Army of Darkness is a direct sequel to ED II. Ash vs Evil Dead is a TV series with Bruce reprising his role as Ash and is a direct sequel to ED II and AoD. It was broadcast on the Starz Network.

It's "Bruce Campbell VS. The Army of Darkness" in some places. They added his name to the actual movie title. He's just that awesome. :D

Angles/Camera Work/Cutting and whatnot: It's very fun to see how Raimi - over the three parts of the original Evil Dead movies - gets better and better at what now have become typical things he does in his movies. Add to that Bruce Campbell getting better at HIS job over time and the writing (no spoilers) concentrating more on some elements of part 1 and make them become a more important part of the whole universe pretty much everybody agrees that this is one of the few series where each sequel gets better and better. It made Raimi, it TOTALLY made Bruce Campbell. And it's a really nice thing that Raimi got Bruce a part in each of his Spiderman movies (fun stuff!). IF you liked part one - part 2 is better. It really is. And part 3 is... Oh boy. :) Seriously good stuff. Campbell already shows that he goes all in when things get tough. Of THAT (Bruce Campbell alone in front of the camera being an AWESOME actor) imo part 2 contains the best examples. Some of his scenes in that movie are a JOY to watch. :D

The stop-motion effects certainly aren't as realistic as a lot of today's CGI effects... but they are much more entertaining.

I highly recommend bringing in the other guys for 2 and Army of Darkness so that you can all watch Ash vs The Evil Dead TV show together. The Army of Darkness movie is my favorite movie of all time and the show is freaking awesome. 110% Recommend

i don't rate evil dead at all as a movie but it does get a lot of credit, deservedly so, for essentially creating the haunted cabin in the woods sub-genre. 2 and 3 are absolute stone cold classics though. i look on this movie fondly as mostly a collection of great ideas that are still fairly rough around the edges. i appreciate it more than i enjoy it, if that makes sense.

Yes - part one (and the student film "prequel") can be seen as "proof of concept". And then part 2 is "for real". :D

This is Sam Raimi’s first movie. He and Bruce went around to doctors and lawyers in their town showing a teaser to get funding and they got about 90,000 as the budget for this movie.

It's not. He made a movie called It's Murder! with Campbell before this, though since that's only 70 minutes long people tend to lump it in with his shorts.

In the UK, The Evil Dead was labeled a video nasty. It always had this stigma of an unwatchable movie and far more horrific than the sequel.

Evil Dead 2 is better, Army of Darkness has too much cheesy horror comedy, Evil Dead (2013) is awesome, Evil Dead Rise is OK, EVIL DEAD 2: New Chapter is out soon I think.
