One good thing to point out is that it is hypothesised that humans developed laughter as a coping mechanism for a traumatic existence on prehistoric earth. In a world where you are a furless, clawless, fangless creature cursed with the ability to conceptualise your own mortality, laughter helps blow off steam. I don’t think we ever grew past that.

Foundationally, there’s nothing different about Gen Z. Every generation seems to take the chief criticism of the prior generation and uses that as a way to differentiate and establish itself as independent. Boomers took the traditionalism from the silent/greatest generations and introduced progressivism/hippie/free love. Gen X took boomers performative free love/hippie/progressive sincerity and added sarcasm. Millennials added irony and nihilism. Gen Z added absurdity. I predict Gen Alpha to bring back the earnestness.

If gen alpha(betical)(I’m trying to be funny) is going to be serious after us then what would the point be with humor/memes I mean there is literal brain rot memes like skibidi toilet out there but then again I’ve seen a video where they did take that joke seriously, sure it’s absurd but they made it seem so serious like putting a sign up that says laugh to the audience instead of laughing from the audience on its own.

As a Gen Zer...dawg, I can't stand any of this. I considered myself an agnostic, but I'm at the point where I feel like giving faith another chance to spite a world that can't stop reveling in its inability to just be sincere. This all rings so hollow, escaping the idea of life's meaninglessness thru incoherence. It doesn't promote taking action to define your life's meaning, it promotes giving up and checking out under the guise of "don't worry, be happy." You can't build or continue a society or culture around this. We're watching whatever's been happening for the past 20 years crumble apart, and that's fine, because the whole postmodern set simply isn't working any longer. There needs to be some coherence in order to keep a civilization together and this brand of humor is like watching someone's mind melt out of their ears. Party on while your ship sinks, I'm taking the lifeboat to making life matter again. If it takes giving God CPR, I'll give it a go.

Technically a Millennial but I hear you. The ironic humor as a means to cope with meaningless is only a temporary solution that fades fast as you age, hence the Gen Alpha brainrot being called out by most of Gen Z rather than embraced. Hoping for a cultural return to faith and traditional values while keeping the best of progress
@ToucanMoment
@ToucanMoment 10 күн бұрын
@@wasntthatweirdproductions thing is, most religions don't give out convincing answers. we just can't pretend to re-believe in a faith... it's absurd. maybe practice it culturally but to believe the said religion after seeing millions of scientific proofs is just absurd. I am agnostic as well but I kinda wish there was an answer to our existence, there are many theories but I want a final answer. I am having an existential crisis
@wasntthatweirdproductions
@wasntthatweirdproductions 10 күн бұрын
@@ToucanMoment I appreciate the response. I don't think that culturally practicing it while personally not believing it would work on a large scale. That'd be like believing in Santa. It might help little kids, but imagine if adults were completely committed to it themselves when talking with other adults even though they thought it was fake. I would imagine the next generation would become disenfranchised by it all. Full disclosure, I am a practicing Catholic, but that doesn't mean I haven't had my share of doubts or questioning the meaning of it all. That's one of the beauties of Catholicism, not everything has to have an answer since if we could comprehend the fullness of God, He'd definitely be made up. Doesn't mean having faith isn't hard though. I like to think it's like falling in love. When you commit to a person, you have to let go of some control in order to really love them, which is hard. The more you open up to them, the more potential hurt or heartbreak could be inflicted. But if they're worth it, that letting go is worth it. Having faith is hard since we want to control our lives with definite certainty

Was raised in a catholic culture and I'm Gen Z. As an adult I am agnostic and God or no God, I am here and that's all that matters. Life is absurd inherently and maybe that's why those memes are comforting. The whole deal is finding a balance between self preservation, so I can witness the phenomena of life. And not forgetting that I am part of said phenomena.

As a 27-year-old myself, there is no meaning crisis. There's a responsibility crisis. We must embark on self-actualization and take on burdens to find our own meaning. Yes, this means I can't give someone a prescription, nor is it even my responsibility to. If we live online and in comfort, we will not endure the struggles we must undergo in life in order to test and find ourselves. Every nihilistic Zoomer I've met is online too much, and I don't think this is a coincidence.

I am Gen Z (2002) and I used to love and post meme, reading all the funny quote comments on KZbin meme on the day of my childhood. When I grow up physically I ended up dealing a lot of life choice, human connection, man-child. everyday I woke up, got a existential crisis 24/7 on streak , no amount of reality show, movie, anime, video games or meme can fulfill my emptiness of the void. no amount of Light-hearted, Motivation quote can uplifting my soul it just distracted me to constantly get the existence dread feeling. I feel ashamed, lost, confused that my life is always on surface, superficial and meaningless. after I read more book or doing something that call "Critical Thinking" slow down my desire and self-hatred and dive deep into psychology of me. I ended up know that I love meme just because it coping mechanism, it draw a heir of same humour, experience, feeling, to connect (cope) in single pictures. it not about absurdism of Gen Z (Which btw some Gen Z confused it with Hedonism, also in 2024 that most of "nature" is manufactured to be absurdity by cooperate capitalism that everything you see, everywhere you go, even inside the human psychology manipulation which I feel the ideology is not appeal to me) In the end, it not about being absurdity of life because you never know that "nature" is real or constructed. for me to enjoy life and uplifting my wisdom and soul need to go in the middle path. being enjoy phenomenal with passionate and being existentialism to find what is the highest goal of my life is the way to break myself from self-caged.

I’m Gen Z born in 2003, i grew up with 2 Older Millennial Brothers (1993, and 1995). My Oldest Bro we are very close we send shit online whether it’s Dirt Bikes, Cool Tricks, Sports, and well Memes. I’m pretty sure every Gen Z’er had to at least made a meme in their lifetime, hell i remember in High School there was a competition for best “relatable memes of school” By that time in 2017-2018 when it was relatable it was okay post like a Facebook post. What you had to do was tap into absurdity of a situation, this is where formatting came into play, at this time the photos had context behind them so you used that context and put in your own Twist. I used the ‘Floor is Lava’ Meme and I put the “Floor is Summer Bridge” which was the program i was in before starting High School and many kids and I were in. This was the time when in Coherence was on the rise I.E “The Baku Series” ‘Boneless Pizza’. I was really heavy into memes and everyone else was so I made my instagram into a meme account and yes I would make my content. Gen Z tapped into many flavors Relatable, Absurd yet relatable , Ironic, Surrealism, edits, shitposting Etc. At the time though in early 2018 i didn’t have any joys of life other than video games and memes but i did have a longing of Motocross ever since when I was smaller. My Brothers rode when they were small had everything and everything sold, my family was going into divorce when i was 3 (2005-2006). Years later they made it all back up especially with my older bro got his bike and truck. In my childhood i was only raised with Video Games, KZbin, of course I had friends. In December 2018 my wish came true I had been given a Dirt Bike for Christmas! That right there, was a big revelation in my life and gave me a sense of purpose. With that Gift it brought me closer to my older Brother and his love for riding I will always appreciate the trips he has taken and the things he had taught me! He also showed my family and i snowboarding thanks to his Friend. I was making memes, doing good with Homework as I had to keep up my grades to continue to ride more, of course gaming it up. The rate I was busy in real life I started to post more of what I wanted to post, and slowly falling out of meme/edits content creation. Really awesome times in High School until Covid Hit and is was in a slump. Almost failed but managed to get it going again. Post High School (2021), i had a 2 Year Hiatus of not riding as I got a Job after two weeks of just Graduating thanks to my Older Sister (1999). At the time being I also had another hiatus of not snowboarding in 3 years, funny enough my good Friends got into snowboarding so i decided to ask for some days off and go boarding once again! I’ve been to many and multiple trips that year and 2023 I had saved enough money to finance my very own Dirtbike. I’ve gotten to ride my OWN Bike. Around this time my Brothers had Moved away to Texas so we decided to take a trip in 2022 went to Texas Before but in 2023 I had taken my bike carried by hitch with a SUV and rode with My Older brother and his ‘Brother in law’ also my dad was there too! To this day i still carry over my Interests into Adulthood, sure they are expensive and almost seemingly out of means when the situation my family had been dealt with. We managed to survive and well thrive we make an effort to stay in contact as all my siblings moved away and out of state. It was the memes to cope with and not means, when I had nothing to really to put all my focus on or even had the opportunity to do all things I had done in late High School to Adulthood! Thankful for every minute of it, I had found my meaning but not without memeing! 😊 Thank You Cole! 🙏

The myth of Sisyphus is not an accurate reflection of absurdism. Absurdism is excepting that life is short and meaningless and can end at any moment but worrying about it is meaningless also. However, deth is the escape here. Sisyphus didn't have that to look forward to. He's not able to change anything or look forward to it ending. Therefore its not a fair representation.

Nihilism is always a scream. Yours is a return to Dadaism and the destruction of meaning. Ours (Gen X, remember us?) was detachment, ironic observation, and withdrawal. For Millennials, it was the open expression of depression, something my flinty generation did not do. For you, it's a kind of technicolor warrgarble that screams back into the void. It makes sense to me because compared to my TV childhood, your Internet childhood was WAY more overstimulating and based on the tiniest illusion of control in this madhouse world. Just remember : you didn't invent irony. We did! :P

Is that a joke? Some guy may have existed that resembles some form of a seed of what today is known as Jesus. But whatever that dude was has nothing to do with the made up nonsense story that the name Jesus compiles to. Actually it is known that christianity is a fabrication by the roman empire pulled together by many different religions at the time in an attempt to prevent its incoming downfall. It was designed by politicians that knew that only a religion would unite the people enough to stop the infighting that happened more and more. Before they invented christianity, all religions were allowed there. But after that they called themselves the Roman Catholic empire and one of the darkest and most terrible times humanity has ever faced started. And it only ended with common sense finally getting the upper hand over this madness. If it wasn’t for people questioning this evil religious concepts, we would still burn woman on the streets for healing children. I think that says it all about what religions actually are: Just another tool invented for leaders to control the masses. One that has brought unimaginable suffering over the people and nature alike for thousands of years.

We should also consider gen z are very insecure. Millenials are doomers but always put some effort in the memes, gen z don't want that pressure. They want to make stuff so stupid that can't suck because it has no meaning so they don't have to face judgement for their effort.

Gen Z are a bunch of Nihilists hiding behind snide/quippy humor. As an older millennial, I will note that my peers aren’t much different. It becomes problematic when major life events happen (and they will… oh yes, they will) and there is no meaning to turn to (religion, common culture, robust in-person peer groups). Good luck ladies and gents.

In the gen z humor section... it sounds really boomer to be like "haha gen z memes are trash and incoherent." Maybe rephrase that? Cause it just makes it seem like you're a millenial who doesn't get it. Humour is subjective, and it's a natural evolution.

I hate how certain people who talk about today's issues and the decline of our country try to paint the decline in religion as part of the problem. Even if it in some way contributes to some of the negatives it's one of the better aspects and factors of today's world. It's long passed due for people to learn to come to terms with their reality without relying on imaginary magical beings and I just chalk it up to growing pains and us learning how to do that. We haven't seen such a major shift in religious numbers like this pretty much ever as far as I know so of course it's not gonna be an easy transition but it's for the best over all. Just be sure belief in God has provided us with comfort all these years doesn't mean all the other horrible things religion has caused is worth it. We just have to find another thing to put our faith in... Hopefully something real.....

I think it's absurd to not realize that, yes, ones life in of itself by itself, has no meaning. Life and its potental for meaning works the same way that money works in society. You won't have any money unless you work for it or someone gives it to you. So if you want your life to have meaning you have to work for it or be lucky enough to receive meaning from someone else. 😂 I honestly know for a fact that the reason the memes are becoming dumber and make no sense isn't because of any of what you said or others that try to make sense of it. Yall are looking at it to seriously, it really comes from the lack of a proper education in western countries. The same people that graduated highschool 10 years ago learned stuff they barely reinforce in kids now. They let people pass that should be held back a grade more than ever. With covid 19 they are teaching them less and less. My niece shoulder me her 4th grade homework that looked like school work from first grade... it's really happening.. also there's so many ways to cheat than there ever was before... so even less people are receiving a proper education. If you watch those videos about people asking people on the street 1st grade questions and they have no idea how to answer it right.. I think the whole IQ level of all the Gen z and gen alphas that are making memes now are dropping rapidly Even more so with the brain dead memes.. it has nothing to do with nihilism or absurdity, yet the whole idea that they are stretching comedy to it's limits is a absurd notion to have I feel like those brain dead memes are just proving how much intelligence is lacking in those that think it's funny. 😂
