Always. Always always Gene like Lionel Hampton said. When he sees and hears Gene it reminds him of the all American drummer boy launching one thousand or more missles

Eddie Shu may sound more "modern" (or cooler) than Gene, but he infuses another character to that piece and, with his three instruments, adds a welcome variety. You need that in a 20-minutes piece played by only four musicians (and no bass solo)! Some may regret the Goodman versions but I'm happy to have something different to listen to. Great piano, too! (I don't need to comment on Gene's performance, he's above that!)

What do you mean by "regret the Goodman version"?

I see he's got that A.Zildjian Splash on a tilter, unlike the '40s..Krupa always picked up on trends, see what's new and getting with it.

Gene didn’t pick up trends, he started them.

If Mr. Shu is going to bring three instruments and play extended solos he could at least make it interesting. Gene and the others on the other hand played some fine music.

I'm not saying that these were my favorite solo's. (or my favorite version of sing sing sing for that matter) I am curious how many instruments you've mastered and could competently play at the level of Gene Krupa. My father was formally educated on Piano, Violin and Classical Guitar. He then became part of the famous Cappy Barra Harmonica group playing Chromatic and also did a professional ventriloquist show in the Catskills. Eventually he added a few more instruments including Trumpet, Clarinet and of course Saxophone. He also played Clarinet with Louis Armstrong's All Stars. I've actually never heard a derogatory statement of my father's talents so I am a bit surprised by your statement. But I support your right to your opinion. Aloha, Evan
