I met Gene at the 76 Truckstop in Effingham when 14 carat mind was #1. I was working the fuel and was tipped off he was coming in that night so I put his song on the jukebox before I waited on him and his Lincoln Town Car. I got to see him swell as he walked in through the glass. I was only 17 years old.

I owned a car wash in Paris Texas in the early 2000s. Gene would come by and get his truck cleaned every few months or so. He gave my Dad his greatest hits cd on one trip.
