Loved his books. Never get tired of his stories or experiences, no matter how many times I've heard them before. Stayed up late to watch this. Gene is just a smart, humble all around great soldier. I send this clip to all my nephews as someone they can look up to. So proud of his Taiwanese roots where I am from too!

The pizza story never gets old, no matter how many times I hear it. But yeah, I started reading Yellow Green Beret in 2013, before I shipped off for Basic and I loved it then. Now, 8 years and 3 duty stations later, I think it's super important for us as Asian American servicemembers and especially for our families. Before YGB came along, all we really had was Danny Chen and Harry Lew for reference, and I don't think we could blame our moms and dads for thinking we were making the biggest mistake of our lives by enlisting. (For due diligence purposes, I'm not a 35P, it's a tag associated with this account for other hobbies)

I have such commonalities with Mr. Yu that I hope to have personal commmunication with him. I never spent time in S.F. service, but some character qualities tied with military historic intersections compel me to seek him out. A wonderful interview.🤝🏻👏🏻

America would probably not be so hated and probably do more good work with its military if Green Berets were the weapon of choice. It's sad to hear from these podcasts how they were basically sidelined at the beginning of the GWOT in favor of brute force and hammer diplomacy so politicians could have good footage to claim we were winning. Actual hearts and minds campaigns just don't fit into 30 second soundbytes.

Gene, in the east bay the recruiters were active in the late 80’s and 90’s. and a number of friends and fam signed up. SV , peninsula, SF and Marin are in a bubble that the military is evil or just have no exposure.

I used to go by Westpoint on the god awful Hudson River once a week for a few years. That may be the coldest grayest and utterly depressing place i have ever seen. It looks like some Siberian prison whos prisoners are undoubtedly always cold. Truly a rude looking place Guarantee Gene's favorite book early in his career was Team Yankee. All of us in the Armor and Cav thought is was so cool and Harold Coyle may as well been Rommell lol

There was that bear Wojtek who followed around Polish soldiers during World War 2. Even scared a couple nazis into disarming and humped ammo for an artillery crew. Also smoked, drank, and boxed with the troops. He really deserves a movie, he was in a zoo for a long time after the war.

A lovely suggestion with SANS Institute. Cyber needs good minds👍🏻 I'd urge business owners to encrypt and isolate data and never allow a cyber switch to be a trigger for a kinetic switch.
