The irony is the Imperium of Man is the *antithesis of what the Emperor envisioned* before the Horus Heresy. He wanted to elevate Humanity into a secular rational thoughtful species to whom superstition, religious dogma and blind obedience would be anathema. He was constructing a Webway network to remove the dependence on the Warp, and viewed Progress as the Salvation of Humanity - he was… a Progressive. And yet this irony may well elevate the Emperor personally. The collective psychic energy of all of Humanity worshipping him as a "living" God may, in the end, actually turn him into a Divine Being more powerful than the Demons of the Warp, up there with the ancient Gods. So a own goal, or more accurately blowback, by the forces of Chaos as a immortal psychic Human is becoming transcendent by the will of a stagnating corrupt Human civilisation that is slowly fading into entropy. _That's a double irony…_

The Death Korps of Krieg are cloned soldiers, something normally outlawed in the Imperium, are trained to follow any order even if it's suicidal, believe in the God Emperor to a degree that can startle the priests of the Imperial Cult, consider any weakness that prevents fighting and dying for the Emperor to be shameful and are brainwashed to make sure that they never think outside of this box. Add in a need to redeem the sins of their homeworld and a mostly forgotten civil war they fought to reclaim it in a nuclear wasteland for 500 years that saw battles being short due to the radiated nature of the surface so with time being the ultimate factor lives were considered expendable for gains and you get a soldier who literally wants to die to expunge the sins on their soul and redeem their world in the eyes of the Imperium and the Emperor. Slaves of their own making, they could stop but they won't until the (dead) God Emperor forgives them. Fantastic background and my favourite regiment.

@42billybob I do agree, but it is important to note that the Eldar are the most psychic race in the universe. They all experience feelings to a much higher degree than humans or any other "canon" xenos races. They all basically got addicted to the highs of pleasure, much like heroin addicts in our world. For tens of thousands of years, it gradually became more and more excessive. To add on, because Slaanesh wasn't born yet, all Eldar were practically immortal, being able to be reborn with memories intact. In my opinion, this greatly facilitated the downfall of their race. The Eldar of eons past had very little to fear from the Warp, and they were very in tune with it. Thus, only by their collected hedonism for tens of thousands of years was Slaanesh able to be born. In short, maximizing individual human happiness isn't going to have the effect implied in your comment, since the Eldar are much more psychically attuned to the Warp. P.S. If you're wondering why I'm saying that Eldar are the most psychically attuned race, but the Warp is fueled mostly by Humanity, the Eldar that survived the Fall are all now very wary of letting their emotions pass through into the Warp; they shield themselves from it. Also, the Dark Eldar, the remainder of the pleasure cults that were the root of the Fall can't use any Warp powers because it would bring Slaanesh's attention to them, risking daemonic incursions into the Webway, and their Warp powers have atrophied through millennia of disuse.

@@iainengle-roe2861 I find it hard to believe Humanity wouldn't follow a very similar path in the long term. Psychic attunement to the warp is something that evolves over time. The older a race is, the more psychic they tend to be (exceptions being the necrons & tyranids because they have no souls). Humanity didn't always have psykers. The Tau's lack of psychic is usually associated with them being a "young" species, not something inherent to their biology. Orks are probably on par with Eldar in terms of psychic potential, they're just too dumb to actually wield that consciously. But they're so psychic they reshape reality around themselves and make physically impossible machines function just by believing they will work. Longevity is something any culture will pursue when they prioritize the individual. There are space marines who are pushing ages of 2 thousand years or more. Such ages are possible, so if Humanity focused on that, they could easily see lifespans on par with the ancient Eldar given enough time to develop. And even if they weren't, simply being born into a culture that has already lowered its standards of what it considers repugnant and depraved starts the next generation that much farther along on the downward spiral. So that leaves Humanity's more numb senses & emotions, something that IMO would only speed up the growing bored of socially acceptable pleasures and escalating to depravity (and humanity's numbers could easily offset the dimmer reflection in the warp if there's a corelation there). I suppose there is also the conscious effort to repress such behaviour. But this is generally speaking the tyranical authoritarianism antithetical to individualism in the first place (so this thought experiment already starts by drastically minimizing this factor). Also warp power is like nukes... anyone who doesn't have it is going to lose the arms race in inter-Humanity conflicts all other things being equal. So even if 99% of humanity is good boys who practice warp abstonence, the 1% will inevitably gain more and more power and influence. Even if they don't create their own deity through some other powerful emotional evil, they can easily end up empowering an existing chaos god to similar results.

The Imperium is shaped by its truly extreme environment, and given how nightmarish and relentless the threats it faces are, it is not so easy to point to a better alternative. Democracies often suffer from governmental paralysis due to internal debate, something that you can't afford when a countdown to galactic Armageddon is a semi-regular occurrence. They are also vulnerable to war fatigue, and given the fact that only continuous war has allowed humanity to endue for ten thousand years in the 40K setting that would also be something of an issue. Would a society more concerned with a system of morality akin to our own have survived for even a fraction of the time the Imperium has? For that matter, and for all the pseudo-moral posturing that you see in the world today, how many people would be so quick to cleave absolutely to their high moral principles when facing threats such as those the Imperium deals with every day? How long would it be before our own society started to use extreme measures if they were the only way to guarantee the survival of our species, and damn the moral concerns? Sitting comfortably in your living room and ruminating on the inherent moral worth or otherwise of the survival of humanity is one thing, but living at the sharp end, where the survival of humanity (not to mention your very own self) is in no way a strictly academic question, is entirely another, and I think a great many people might find that such an imminent threat to their own hide focuses their thinking very effectively. In the final analysis, I think most people would fight for their own survival and that of the people around them if it really came down to it, and, for all its flaws and failures of administration and effective governance, at its core the the Imperium is simply that concept writ extremely large in a beyond dire fictional continuity.

@@boxcarz to be fair, they told the only loyalist officer on the planet to hold out his Hive City before they could reclaim the rest of the planet, and the Imperium only gave up on Krieg after said officer realized the best course of action was nuclear winter. And in the end, I'm pretty sure the Imperium got the best end of the deal, because post-rebellion Krieg is probably more valuable than pre-rebellion Krieg due to its export of the Death Korps to the cause of the Imperium. I mean, how many regiments did Krieg offer after it was reunited with the Imperium? 10? 20? All trained, armed and combat-ready with the request to be sent to the worst battlegrounds of the galaxy? With such _dedication_ (read fanatism) and _high morale_ (read disregard for losses), that most WW1 generals would have probably sold their souls just to get their hands on one regiment on these madmen.

@@amymason156 First, this thread was meant as a joke. Second, many players have armies built up over years, that's how a hobby works. Third, no content creator should just assume they are entitled to other people's money. My money, my choice. Not everyone wants to donate, many of those who do might not be able to afford it, those who can might only be able to spare a few dollars. The sponsorship revenue allows those content creators to continue to create entertaining videos for their fans and support their lifestyle. I hate ads as much as anyone, but they are a necessary evil.

Relying on ad revenue isn't 'a necessary evil', it's an unreliable (and dubious) convenience. There's plenty of content creators on KZbin who can't support themselves on ad revenue even if they try, so they need to rely on subscriptions and donations. New hosting platforms have been created specifically for this reason. And yes, it can still work even when the majority of users watch for free. After all, if 43,000 people watch someone's video, they could have enough money to live on for a month (at least, by my standards), even if the average viewer donated three cents. If viewers are willing to watch someone talk for 20 minutes, either the content is worth more than three cents to them, or they must think terribly about the value of their time. Heck, if you spend 10 dollars a day on food and sleep eight hours, you're spending more than 20 cents just on the fuel that gives you enough energy to mentally process the video. Last point: Hobbies don't necessarily work like home mortgages. A game shop full of people could supply themselves with everything they need to play war games for a lifetime at a lower cost than just one Warhammer 40K army, if they used cardboard and scrap wood. That's how I did it in middle school. (I haven't spent a thousand dollars on entertainment in my life, though that might have more to do with the rent than my preferences.) No need to pick a fight over it; all of these are personal choices, after all. I just don't want you to think there's no other way. Or at least, I don't want someone telling me so.

Don't forget, everything in the 40k universe is a competition for resources and planets. Why should the Imperium give a damn about other aliens, when they want to keep their own species alive. For example the Tau act like they have some kind of utopia, yet treat other races that are lower than them, such as the rank system and resources are given mainly to their own kind, while using humans for first battle engagements only etc and brainwashing. There's no sense of sharing, since it'll end up having to be another conflict of who gets what stuff and who gets less. This is basically the equivalent of the Rwanda genocide of the Tutsi and Hutu, when the Tutsi had more greater wealth and social status and the Hutu was merely getting less and we're low class farmers.

The Tau exist only because they have remained not enough of a problem for the imperium to truely give a shit. The Tau by our standards and experience with war, employ very viable tactics and the conservation of man power is necessary due to their circumstances. In galatic scale warfare the individual soldiers and even planetary populations are reduced to nothing but numbers. The war becomes less about strategy and tactics. It essentially ends up being about how much is this section of space worth and is this a price we can /will pay? The Tau can afford their "morality" by virtue of their comparably miniscule size.

The problem with the Imperium is that they have gone a bit off the rails just trying to survive. The Imperial Truth would have been successful in draining most of the power away from Chaos, other than She Who Thirsts, freeing up vast resources to deal with the xenos threats. Think of all the fortress worlds that wouldn't be needed because Chaos was not constantly attacking, the void fleets, and the Adeptus Astares chapters. That is a massive amount of forces that could be on crusade instead of being garrisoned.

In many ways The Glorious Imperium of Man is based on one of the oldest most common and longest lasting forms of empire which can be traced back to the early bronze age civilizations (tributary Satraps). And while democracy on a planetary level could and probably does exist in the Imperium on any larger scale it would be unworkable. And given its shere size and the communication/travel issues it faces even without the myriad of threats it faces it's hard to see how the governmental structure could be that much different.

That's not true because humanity functioned much better before the age of strife, through working together with xenos and using their technology to defeat the enemy rather than pure numbers. In fact the old technological remains is the main thing that prevented the imperium from getting destroyed. Imagine the imperium without their battlefleet or without titans, even with just space marines they'd be crushed.

@@taserrr the imperium doesn’t use pure numbers to defeat it’s enemies, if you believed that you never read a ig novel, the ones that rely on pure numbers are the chaos followers, more specific the cultists legions, with the exception of the deth korps the majority of the Ig rely on superior firepower, tactics and tech to win, with the korps preferring the use of attrition tactics to win, but even then that’s not relying on numbers alone. But before the age of strife that were human colonies that collaborated with xenos races and were quite prosperous, but there were also a bunch more of xenos that enslaved or mind manipulated humans to serve than, which just got worse with the age of strife, during the great crusade there were a bunch of human colonies that had to be liberated from the claws of aliens. And the empire that was prospering with the help of xenos (that active fought caos) was obliterated by the sons of Horus before they could brought there knowledge to the imperium (cuz someone had the brilliant idea of steeling a sword)

Humanity used the men of iron before the age of strife and let their AI tech do the work, a titan is worth tens of thousands of imperial guard. Todays military uses drones for most of the combat, even today we don't use mass infantry anymore.

Not really, there's no proof of that. Also, the Imperium deliberately hamstrings it main military forces - the Imperial Guard and the Fleet. They do it to prevent the impact of widespread heresy like what happened with Horus. The rules that Bobby G. put in place meant that it would be much harder for entire forces to turn. For example, Imperial Guard regiments might turn, but they will have limited impact if they can’t actually travel anywhere. They need the fleet to move around and separating them reduces the impact.

I'd argue the most crucial argument against the structure of the Imperium is the technological monopoly of the Mechanicus, as it costs them the compounding effect if technological development, without which any nation is doomed to eventual irrelevance. Due to the ban on new research, the Imperium has been slowly decaying for 10 000 years. It took less than 3 thousand years for the T'au to go from spears to where they are now. If the Imperium dedicated a mere 0.01% of its budget (supposedly 100 planets worth of economic output) they would easily outpace the development pace of the T'au at least 7000 years ago, would have rendered the Tyranids utterly harmless simply by the superiority of their ships weapon systems and likely even by numbers (turning an entire asteroid field or a whole planet into ships gives you a *lot* more to work with than the extremely rare and thin layer of organic matter on the outside of a planet), potentially have found reliable personal or planetary protection from the influence of the Warp, and the Orks and even the Krorks would long since have found that their genecoded technology and robust physiology can't stand up to swarms of self-guided smart munitions fired from the other side of the planet or even from orbit. Nothing was as crippling to the Imperium as the complete cessation of technological development.

The weird thing is, I actually find 40K more uplifting and inspiring than something like Star Trek. Why? Well... The Federation's never really been in danger. Maybe 70% of all aliens they encounter are friendly or neutral, and the ones that aren't can be either negotiated with (Klingons, Romulans) taken out with a BS tech-sorcery solution the Federation scientists pulled out their ass (Borg, Species 8472) or both (Dominion.) There's an all-pervading can-do, logic-and-reason-solve-everything air to Trek that I just find naive and anaemic. The Imperium's been in danger for its entire history. Trying to negotiate with the local aliens will get you killed (if you're lucky) melted into nutritious biomass soup and eaten by giant space bugs (if you're unlucky) or taken prisoner and tortured by rape-elves who can keep you alive but in constant agony for decades (if you're REALLY unlucky.) There's no hope of peace, liberty or even a lasting victory (unless the Big E finally decides to wake up and get off his golden toilet.) But the armies of the Imperium keep on fighting, stubbornly resisting the inevitable. That's why I find 40k more uplifting and inspiring than Star Trek. Sure, on one level, it's a cruel, bloody, fascist theocracy with a billion ways to die horribly, but on another level...it's a glorious tribute to the spirit of man who, when faced with a universe full of things that want to rip their heads off and spit down their necks, joined together to declare, in one voice, "YOU FIRST!"

He talks a lot about ancient China and it just fascinating. It may not be as interesting as WH40K, unless you are a politics nerd but it is still a great read.

I’d argue the best chance of survival for humanity as a race is surrendering to chaos. Chaos is eternal and humans can live forever in it. It might be the worst kind of survival but it is still the best chance humanity has of being there in the future. So my point is that the goal can never be just survival of the species, there is more to it.

Chaos is to unreliable a path to survival to be truly viable. If the Chaos gods realised that without sentiant life they would seize to be then yes. But until such a time then the imperium seems the best out of a rotten bunch
