Dorian Yates shares his reaction to the moment Ronnie Coleman soared past Yates' Mr. Olympia streak.
When it comes to heavy hitters in the history of Mr. Olympia, there is only a small number of athletes who hit the mark for high number of Sandow trophies. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Phil Heath, Lee Haney, and Ronnie Coleman come to mind. Then of course there's also Dorian Yates who landed a total of six Olympia wins. Immediately after Yates stepped down, Ronnie Coleman went on to earn himself eight Sandow trophies tying for the world record set by Lee Haney. In our latest GI Exclusive Vault interview, Dorian Yates reflects on the moment Ronnie Coleman surpassed Yates' record.
GI VAULT - is an extension of our GI Exclusive interviews. The difference? These interviews come straight out of the Generation Iron vault from the cutting room floor of our feature film documentaries. With over hours of interview footage that doesn’t make it into our final films, we’re now releasing them out into the world.

Just love Dorian's interviews. In addition to being a great champion and very intelligent, he's intellectually honest and isn't ego-driven or furthering an agenda of protecting or promoting his own legacy when he speaks. Just a down-to-earth guy talking about something he both loves and knows a lot about. Awesome stuff.

That ego absolutely showed through. Wanted to label his period in as the most competitive, just to say that his 6 could equal a higher number. That’s pure ego. He won 6 but it could count as much as lee or Ronnie because the time he competed. He just says it well enough to hide. But that’s all ego.

@allMTN : BS, every single man is ego driven and especially the champ cause the champ is willing to sacrifice all he has to be the champ or as Big Ron said "Everyone wants to win. Everyone wants to be the best. There can only be one Mr. Olympia. If you want to do something different, if you don't like the sport you're competing in, then don't compete". Ain't no such thing as an "humble man", there are just people who show off and other who don't because they are not confortable with show off (DY is the latter).

The Dorian Yates. The best bodybuilder ever and pretty much the only real guy out of any of them imo. Dude has integrity, high IQ and a great outlook on life. When young gym guys want bodybuilding guidance I just say "Blood and Guts 6 week trainer, Dorian Yates KZbin". I put 25kg on in 18 months natural. I went from 75kg to 100kg with around 12-15% BF at 5' 10"using Dorians brutally high intensity system in Blood and Guts. I have always loved training heavy to failure so this system I adore. I am lucky with genetics being mesomorphic but I did not think I could even get this big naturally. Growth seemed to slow down at 100kg but I am inconsistent because of work, skipping a couple of days most weeks. I would love to see how big I can get naturally and intend to with better consistency and more food. Hope this helps any guys starting out and wanting to put on muscle but follow a healthy natural Bodybuilding route. Thanks Dorian!

I wonder why it is that everyone thinks their era was the most competitive! I mean, Ronnie had very tough competition when he was against Jay Cutler as well. And in the earlier years of his reign, he had Levrone and Flex to compete with as well. Phil had good competition too. He dethroned Jay Cutler, and mind you, Jay wasn't old or anything. Also, Phil competed against Kai Greene. Now, like Kai or not, he certainly was no slouch. Even guys like Dexter Jackson were good competition for Phil. Even the likes of Dennis Wolf, who, even though doesn't have a top notch resume, still was a top level competitor. Fact is, all these guys with multiple Olympia wins defied some pretty insurmountable odds. It's hard to say exactly how a guy from one era would have faired in a different one

No dorian had greater competition easily Ronnie beat past prime Wheeler( who coudnt get ripped anymore and was syntholed as fuck), beat past prime legless Levrne, beat Ray, Naser, Dillett when they started to fade after 98... Dorian beat ll those guys in their prime versions, when they were in condition and had fewer weaknesses, and won all those Olympias with perfect score unlike Ron Thats the thing, during Ronnies riegn it was mass at all costs , but at the expense of the insane conditioning and their midsections.... 90s>2000s BY QUITE A WAY

I remember Arnold Schwarzenegger making derogatory remarks about Dorian Yates in a "FLEX" magazine article around year 1997 (internet wasn't big back then). Arnold really had no reason to. I suppose he didn't like it when Dorian was creeping up on his (Arnold's) 7th Mr. Olympia title.

@@potatoballs7988 of course he didn't, he didn't lick his ass one bit. Never competed at the Arnold's, never spoke to him, never said a good word about Arnold so Arnold got offended, how could anyone not possibly suck up to him? I’m not the biggest fan of Dorian’s physique (and that’s not me saying I wasn’t a fan. Like every dominant Olympia champion he had controversial years he has 6 - maybe he should have 4/5. Ronnie is no different not everyone believed he should have won all 8) 1993 Dorian is the only physique I’ve seen capable of competing with Ronnie. After that Dorian had injuries and never quite reached that 93 level again but he was obviously still amazing. 93 was pinnacle type stuff. Put it on stage this year and he is winning the Olympia 30 years later - that’s crazy. Dorian’s mindset? The way he seems to think and talk about things? He had that .01% mentality Michael Jordan type stuff. Amazing mind. The way he seemed to approach bodybuilding I could only dream of having that discipline drive and smarts. Just seems like an amazing guy. 1 of those guys who if someone asks “you can have dinner with any 3 people who you picking?” Dorian would be a great choice
