There are some serious problems inside of the New Republic leaderships. Senator Hamato Xiono particularly seems to have an issue with one of the leading commanders within the New Republic Defense Force. Today we look at what motivates Senator Xiono and why he might not be as big of a problem as some might think.

I disagree about Hera being out-of-line. Immediately after a state's foundation, especially a state founded on a violent revolution, the Defense Council should not be filled with people spouting "there is no War in Ba Sing Se, our walls keep us safe." It should be filled with people who can be counted on to be vigilant towards the possibility of new or returning dangers.

The one good thing that came out of him was Kazuda Xiono. However, the problem with Hamato Xiono is we barely know the guy or his motivations. For all we know, Hamato Xiono could have been one of many senators who was inspired by Senator Padme Amidala's speech during the Clone Wars regarding how the Republic should be spending its resources on helping its citizens, not military operations. He is more of a politician who dislikes war and sees it as senseless violence that endangers innocent people like his family. Also, from Resistance, his uniform looks a bit more militaristic as if some event changed him to be more active off-world to help the New Republic and its defense organizations. Overall, the New Republic should use every opportunity it could get to help people across the Galaxy rather than prep for another war even if the latter option is the most logical and pragmatic approach due to the Known Galaxy being part of a story that is literally called STAR WARS. I agree that the New Republic's beginnings reminded me of the United States of America in its infancy following the end of the American Revolution and how they sought to be neutral to help build America into a strong, independent nation.

Honestly you dont even have to be inspired by any speech to think that investing into infrastructur and improving peoples live is more important than funding the military if there is no apparent threat and Hera is providing no evidence that there is an actual threat. For this reason it is also reasonable to assume that Hera has a personal agenda or that Hera simply doesnt know how to deal with a galaxy being at peace since she basically came from a family of rebels and fought for the rebels later on.

@@paulstephensia1412 The New Republic stagnated, yes. But it tried to be better than its predecessor and focus on helping the people more than creating a stronger military. They don't want to repeat the false promise the Old Republic gave to its citizens before showing their deception when the Empire was created. What makes the Empire far evil is that they care more about the military than the well-being of the people with the belief in false security. Yes, there are threats in the Unknown but sacrificing the happiness of people for more security and order makes life meaningless: isolation, slavery, cage, etc. There will be wars but sacrificing one's dignity to win a war is meaningless like Baylan said, "Impatience for victory guarantees defeat." The Empire was impatient to secure peace in the Galaxy (their desired victory) through the belief that total order and security would do so. The Empire in Legends learned their mistake via the formation of the Fel Empire, under the guidance of the Imperial Knights, even though there were problems in that regime.

This is a writing problem as much as anything. For example, Hera had access to Huyang's very detailed scans of the Eye of Sion to present as proof of stolen hardware being used. She also proved that the military hardware was being stolen from Republic shipyards. Her mistake was even letting Xiono bring up Thrawn or Ezra. Hera should have thrown back at him that unknown parties were stealing military assets from the New Republic. A simple reminder of history: the Clone Wars did *not* begin on Geonosis. They began a decade earlier when a *shipping company* decided that they could refit their cargo freighters into battleships and conquer Naboo. Indeed, making the threat more nebulous like that would help scare more Senators with the possibility that it wouldn't take an Imperial Remnant to destabilize the Republic. A rogue corporation could do it, and *had* done it within many Senators' lifetimes.

The divide between outer and inner rim made me think of a concept in Latin American history called “The Mask of Ferdinand”. This was where rebels fought the French authorities in Latin America in the name of the deposed Spanish king. When the king returned they then rebelled against him having no real love for a distant ruler. The outer rim had little reason to love or restore the republic but plenty of reason to rebel. So perhaps for someone like Hera we have a “mask of the republic” rebelling for a cause that you don’t really believe in and does you no good but it is better then the alternative.

I have a theory that Star wars conflicts during the movies beyond their nomenclature of factions basically is showing constant Core vs Rim Wars: Republic vs Separatists; Empire vs Rebellion ; First Order vs New Republic... these are all conflicts between a centralized governement in the core develloped worlds against powers representing the interests of rim under develloped worlds. Essentially the Galaxy seems to be at an infraction point where the demographic shifts in the last centuries towards the Rim has created a situation where the Core is taking too many ressources from the growing rim worlds without giving anything in return apart from bad bureaucratic ruling. The Galaxy is becoming too Big, too spread out for centralized rule. The structure of a single galactic governement seems to be non functionnal. Maybe the Hyperspace tech is too slow for informations and authority to circulate efficiently across the Galaxy. The Core no longer produces anything and doesn't rule efficiently, so mechanically the Rim wants more independance, maybe autonomy. The core knows deep down their influence and relevance is slipping hence they oppress the Rim and take the ressources in classic Thucydides trap fashion only internally. This cycle we are seeing in the saga at this point in history can only end in galactic partition. Maybe a new governement system or a transport/communication tech breakthrough may be the catalyst for a united Galaxy once again but it won't be soon.

I think Xiono is just an opportunist. He's a member of the defense council but keeps cutting Leia (the actual head of the defense council) out of the loop so he can build his support and take over. His reason for attacking Hera? She's connected to Mon Mothma. Embarass Hera and you embarass Mon Mothma in front of the council members he wants on his side. Maybe he is an Imperial sympathizer or has grief with Hera for some reason, but simple political ambition explains both scenes he's been in so far. Plus he's a huge jerk.

As dickish as Xiono was acting, and as foolhardy as his dismissal of the Imperial Remnant is, most of what he was concerned about was valid. He said it -- a General abusing her authority to pursue a personal vendetta. Hera did *not* bring solid, hard evidence to the Senate even *when* she had it, or should have had it. She never mentioned the data from the tracking device, never brought up that those loyal to the Empire had taken a Super Star Destroyer hyperdrive, never gave flight recordings from her cockpit showing the Eye of Scion. Nothing! She continuously relied on her own experiences, belittled those who had different experiences, and it was a favour from a friend that got her out of hot water. She got at least two X-wing pilots *killed* for nothing. I don't blame Xiono one bit for being suspicious of her.

To be fair, it's possible that her evidence was presented off-screen. Hera’s failure to support her actions with evidence she had access too is a pretty good point for how Xiono could dismiss her so easily. It’s too bad that Hera didn’t submit any evidence so she could be portrayed as more than having a personal vendetta while portraying Xiono as willfully ignorant and incompetent, but under closer examination, the opposite is almost true. The optimist in me hopes it’s to portray Hera’s struggle to adapt to a political environment after a lifetime as a soldier but they way they portray Xiono as obnoxious in his dismissal and near-derision of Hera does little to make the conflict between them feel as nuanced as it perhaps should. Xiono himself appears to be made a simple contrarian just to make Hera, despite her legitimate failures to support her claims of Thrawn’s imminent threat, look like the victim of other people’s inactions rather than her own actions.

While I appreciate the defense of the differences of opinion necessary for the functioning of a democracy, I don't think that's what Filoni's shooting for with Xiono. Higher ranking ones like a General would have at least a Masters degree or equivalent. They have also spent time in the "political" side of rising thru the ranks that has to do with networking and gaining favor of others. Even General's like Han Solo who had field commissions would have found it hard to make it after the fall of the Empire. And who knows maybe that was what split him and Leia. 5:45 9:15 I vehemently disagree. There's more than enough politicians and core world governments that would've taken Hera at her word and would've devoted resources for a proactive operation to prevent a theoretical danger. Certainly Palpatine would've listened if Thrawn told him about a threat from afar that might materialize; he even made Thrawn a Grand Admiral for that very same reason. And I'm sure the Jedi Council under Yoda might've at least allocated some resources to help Hera if she was asking the Old Republic for help instead. I can understand if Xiono has something to lose, if Hera wants something more than just a task force. For example, if Hera wants to assume control of the entire navy to rally a manhunt for Thrawn and Ezra, then yes, Xiono's bitching at Hera would make sense, but that isn't the case here. Hera is just asking for a task force, and they lose nothing if she comes home empty-handed. Xiono is just being an ass, for the sake of being an ass, just like Borsk Fey'lya before him. He literally loses nothing if Hera takes some ships on a wild goose chase, which makes his resistance to her all the more baffling and vindictive. It's like he just gets up in the morning thinking of new ways to screw Hera over. It'd make more sense if Xiono is being blackmailed by the Empire; like say, Thrawn's men have holos of him sleeping with other senators' wives, and they threaten to release said holos unless he hampers Hera Syndulla's operation; or maybe he just preferred life under the Empire and secretly wants Thrawn to win, since he's probably old enough to remember that the Old Republic was a dysfunctional pile of crap and the Empire was more effective and efficient than it. At least those explanations would make far more sense as to why Xiono has such a raging hate-boner for Hera on the Senate floor.
@samueldimmock694
@samueldimmock694 Жыл бұрын
Ah, but from Xiono's perspective he does have something to lose. If he allows one general to divert one task force for personal reasons (for that is what he sees this as), then the next time a general (or heaven forbid, an admiral) comes to him asking to use military resources for personal reasons, their request now has precedence. Enough of these, and anyone with a military rank, and half the politicians in the galaxy, can use military resources to do whatever they want. Not to mention that there are only so many task forces to go around, or that moving them is incredibly expensive and a government only has so much money to use for a million different things, some of which are important to Xiono. But you did raise a good point about there likely being some ulterior motive. I don't think it has to be something that extreme (though of course it could be) - maybe he just wants to take some money out of the defense budget for a pet project of his. It could even be a case of caring so much about something important that he ignores something more important.

Even from a purely internal perspective, his positions aren't all that out of whack. The conversation implies that Hera has put a great deal of effort to use New Republid resources to search for Thrawn and Ezra. After years of this post Endor and no actual evidence, there's likely a great deal of political resistance. However, the New Republic reaction to events is horribly managed. They have a Dark Jedi that slaughters the crew of a capital ship, which is then tied to the theft/appropriation of a Star Dreadnaught sized engine that's tkaen to an Outer Rim world. Then you have one of the few Jedi within the Republic going in pursuit. That alone is sufficient cause to send a recon force out to the area supported by a cruiser and for a massive investigation as to how a Core shipyard is taken over by the Imperial Remnant and assassin droids come and go on one of the key systems of the Republic. Instead there's a hero of the Rebellion taking a few fighters with her to backup a Jedi against a Dark Jedi and unknown threat that has clearly shown massive infiltration of the New Republic's naval support structure. The fact that a cruiser task force is sent out after Hera rather than to investigate is a sign of far, far too much undue influence of the Defense Council on military operations than is healthy. Also the fact that upon threat of Court Martial Hera's story is called ridiculous when.. You have three cruisers seeing hyperspacing whales jumping along and are told it's Jedi business defies the narrative. Again, there is likely immediate cause for conference of the Defense Council - but their reactions are wholly out of line. The necessity of a chain of command and adherence to civilian leadership is a virtually sacred duty. The review there is a failure of the Republic Admiralty to review the situation and in turn brief the council. Whether or not Thrawn is alive this is clearly a priority Jedi affair (which the Republic is almost automatically bound to support) involving immense military scale corruption within the planetary infrastructure. That's something that New Republic Intelligence should have put it's boot (or flipper) down on.

Immediately called that he's an imperial simp or plant the moment he opened his mouth. While his concerns are valid, his immediate and absolute dismissal of new information and the way he treats Threepio, who's well implied by the entire council's reaction to Xiono calling him a "mere droid" to be a well known figure in the rebel alliance and essentially a war hero shows to me an almost irrational rush to bury the entire affair of Thrawn's possible return as quickly as possible, because unless the guy's been living under a rock I don't buy that he doesn't know who C-3PO is if he wanted to be any sort of intelligent politician. Also Hera's request wasn't exactly unreasonable. If the idea is to hunt down and stomp out Imperialist remnants, and they *know* some existed because Xiono himself even acknowledged Moff Gideon and the battle of Mandalor, even if he dismissed it as an "isolated incident", it proves the possibility that Imperial Remnants exist in the universe hidden from sight. Even if Hera lacked immediate evidence, why would she...herself a known Alliance hero and general for almost the entirety of its existence, not even be given the benefit of a doubt or at least some resources to make sure? He vehemently challenged even that since the beginning. His fast and absolute dedication to not even hearing out the hypothetical threat, and attempting to brush it under the rug as quickly as possible just screams to me of intentional political collusion to protect something. I wouldn't be surprised if he was instrumental in later ruining Leia Organa's reputation by bringing to light that Darth Vader was her father, and helping to politically keep the New Republic fractured and weak so the First Order could come in and do their thing. He's either totally an imperial sympathizer, a horrible politician, or a badly written character. We'll see which in time.

Linking to that is that monologue from TLJ about how all the corps are selling to both NR/FO and all the politicians are making money off it, etc. So as far as this time period goes, we're being shown that the NR is quite infiltrated by Imp simps to a large degree. From the manufacturing/shipyards to the plants/spies elsewhere in the bureaucracy, now it's people in power in the senate. Xiono is perfect in that role showing us that the senate is already failing. Mon Mothma (ever since the updated universe started happening, basically everything other than her appearance in RotJ) is a weak leader and in my opinion a bad one, she's more concerned about trying to placate people, you're never going to be able to make everyone happy. She doesn't have a backbone to do anything (or even have anything done) in Andor. Let us not forget that if she had been allowed to "lead" in Rogue 1 (Without the Rogue 1 crew and the general ignoring her and doing their own thing), the original death star either wouldn't have been destroyed or if it was would have happened much later because the plans wouldn't have been retrieved. Really most of what this show has revealed so far is that there is already corruption throughout the entire republic and the corrupt ones seem like the most competent, the others are mostly idiots who don't see (either deliberately or through their own stupidity) what is going on and absolutely don't want anyone to prove them wrong. Allen keeps talking about Hera having no facts but she should have some (ie the scans of the giant hyperspace ring, the fact that it was connected to the Imperial loyalists on corellia) but the show (and some of the politicians) just don't want to accept it, or Hera just isn't mentioning it. So either the people in the world are all evil or incompetent, or the writing of the show is poor, or a mix of both.

1:06 Actually, most government systems wouldn't be as bad as the New Republic. The NR is sinking under red tape mere years into their founding. Most regimes start out strong and proactive, and only rot with time. Like the Holy Roman Empire, which was a powerful empire during the early Middle Ages, but a dying husk by the time of Napoleon; they existed for about a thousand years. If the NR was any bit realistic, they'd help Hera Syndulla with her search, and only after several years of failure, turning up nothing, would they call off the search and tell her to get over Ezra's death. They would also start investigating those two Dark Jedi and those stolen SSD hyperdrives rather thoroughly, and would've approved of Hera taking a fleet to Seatos. Heck, the real-world USA would've probably thrown Hera all the support she needs. The Yanks have approved of riskier stuff than a glorified scout patrol looking for a lost war hero. This is why Xiono's resistance to Hera makes no bloody sense. There is literally nothing to lose for Xiono if he approved of Hera's mission from the start. If anything, with his world being a manufacturing world, even the false alarm of a war would get him money since his world could produce and sell military starships to sectors who might be scared of Thrawn's return. Instead, Xiono is just being an ass for the sake of being an ass, just like Borsk Fey'lya before him, making the New Republic worthless in the eyes of the viewers, just like it was in the NJO novels. All it does is show us that Thrawn taking over is probably for the best. If Thrawn wasn't going to cap off his victory by slaughtering the rebel heroes, his victory would've been seen as the best ending, and it probably could have saved the galaxy a lot of grief. Thrawn might've even turned against Palpatine when the old man comes back, given the fact that Palpatine went full-in on Stardust with his Xyston-class Star Destroyer Fleet, which Thrawn opposed back when the same concept was being put forth as the Death Star.

This soooo much. Really my main problem with all the senate meeting scenes is that the characters don't seem (to me at least) to be acting realistically. If they had shown some logical reason for him to be so antagonistic toward Hera, it would be fine in my eyes. But basically the instant we first see him, he is opposing her. Maybe mention some failed attempts to find Thrawn in the past that lead to some deaths of people under her or something... like what we see happen. Give him some actual ammunition against her instead of him just staunchly refusing to consider Thrawn survived. And on the other hand, if the intention is to have him be an imperial sympathizer... he wouldn't be so antagonistic toward Hera; a war hero who has the ear of the Chancellor and Leia. That would just draw attention. He would try to appease her or work around her behind the scenes. TLDR: Just make the characters smarter in their interactions, at least in the Senate scenes. Just my opinion.

I mostly agree but counterpoint the United States had no federal military after the revolution had ended. It wasn’t until the whisky rebellion that a federal military gained support. What then was meant to be a meeting to alter the “articles of confederation” which was the weak constitution of the time turned into an entire reorganization of the United States government and the adoption of a brand new constitution. However I agree with you that in this situation the new Republic should have learned from a weak republic with no military which is what allowed palatine to manipulate the clone wars. The clone wars was their whisky rebellion. The difference is an empire took over before the republic could truly reform.

@@Big_Red1 I seem to remember Xiono making a passing reference to previous attempts to find Thrawn (he said something like "yet another attempt to use military resources for what has become a personal quest to find your friend", which suggests to me that there have been numerous other attempts to find him, and support for those attempts has waned over time). If there had been enough of these attempts, I could see the senate committee dismissing any evidence Hera might present without bothering to inspect them (she's just making stuff up, like she did last time, and the time before that, and the time before that...), though the Dark Jedi and stolen military hardware the OP mentioned is another matter entirely.
@samueldimmock694

Something's definitely gone wrong if the evidence Hera found didn't cause an immediate investigation. As I mentioned above, there does seem to be good reason for the defense committee not to trust Hera, but that should just mean putting someone else in charge. But just because there's a problem doesn't mean it's the Senators at fault. You can't expect people to act on information they weren't given, and based on how Hera interacted with the Defense Committee, it's clear that she'd assume they were choosing to ignore the evidence without bothering to check that they'd received it. Maybe military high command is the source of the problem. Maybe it's someone on the Senators' staff. There are a lot of places where a government can break, and while it's easiest to blame the people in charge, they're not always at fault (though oftentimes they are, and I'm not assuming that isn't the case here, I just don't want to assume the opposite without evidence).

Can someone explain why they didn’t have the coffins loaded up in the chimera already to go the instant Thrawns help showed up? He knew they were coming. The night mothers have force powers or magic so they should be able to open their own tombs and load up their 💩, why they have to have it sprawled all over the hanger instead of in an empty room(s) is beyond belief

I mean, we don't know what is in the coffins. For all we know, they were stored in such a way for the protection of others. So they should spend as little time as possible on the Chimera itself.

@bellgrand Ya they could’ve loaded them 3 days ahead of when they showed up and they’d spend the same amount of time in the chimera as they currently are as no matter what they’d need 3 days to load them so my point still stands

When you live on a world full of ancient magic, much of which either comes from an ancient evil or is involved in keeping it at bay, and most of which you no longer fully understand and/or lack the power to alter or bypass, a lot of things make sense that ordinarily would not. There's probably something special about the tombs that can't be replicated, making it a bad idea to have the coffins anywhere else for longer than absolutely necessary.

Xiono's reasoning was actually very good, and Hera really constantly tried to abuse her power and position being rebellion hero. In this small case New Republic is working as actual normal government, that can't blindly trust single general with no evidence and waste resources for mission that takes origin from rumors and intuition.
@rebelfighter5249
@rebelfighter5249 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. And when we eventually get to TFA, Hera is nowhere to be seen and is largely absent from the sequel trilogy until the battles of Jakku and Exegol where we see the Ghost put in a quick cameo. Something happened to Hera that caused her to retire or be drummed out of the military and I believe battling Thrawn and becoming frustrated with the politics of the NR is what caused her to walk away and disappear for a while.

Agreed. I served and fought in the G.W.O.T . , and recognize that the majority of the U.S.A didn't and some people might not give a sh*t. There's more to life and society than the warrior class and General Syndulla needs to learn how to work with others who are not in her profession.

I thought about it and it dawned on me that it was very good writing to create a character that everyone can love to hate is a great way to keep the viewers coming back just to see how they get punished for their bad behavior this episode and 3p0 was the one that basically got to be the one who 17:17 smacked the ego out of him in the last episode princess Layea was very smart about how to handle his BS send the only one that is basically immune to him and his taunting

While we don't know much about Xiono's allegiance, I do think he was right in denying Hera's request. He is part of the Defense Council and has to decide where to assign the New Republic's ever diminishing fleet to (we've already seen in The Mandalorian that a single starfighter squadron is patrolling the Arkanis Sector, and that's around the same time as the Ahsoka series [we don't know if other squadrons or larger ships are actually out there patrolling that sector, but considering the context clues in The Mandalorian series, I'd say it's a good bet that there is no one else {how often did Din Djarin bump into Captain Carson despite the different planets they were on?}]). He has to allocate where the fleet needs to go, and sending these very important and dwindling number of ships on a wild goose chase wouldn't be very sensible for one in his position. Think about it, if you were told a person that disappeared to parts unknown years ago thanks to a magic space wizard and some giant space whales that could jump into hyperspace was returning, would you believe it? I know I'm sounding like I'm discrediting Thrawn's threat level, but how many (loyal) people in the New Republic are actually aware of him? Mon Mothma, Leia, Hera & her Ghost crew, and those who served in the early rebellion are the only ones I can think of that know he's a very real threat. Like Alan said, Thrawn disappeared pretty early on in the rebellion, and his accomplishments before that were not many for those in the Imperial Navy to log in (I'd say that was on purpose due to him being an alien from the Unknown Regions, Imperial sympathizers within the New Republic likely destroying any intel on the man probably helped too). Everyone being dismissive of Thrawn shouldn't be mocked in doing so. We the audience know what he's truly capable of because we've seen Rebels & read the books, but admittedly very precious few in the whole of the Star Wars galaxy do (and thanks to the efforts of those sympathizers, only those people would ever truly know). So yes, Xiono's decision in denying Hera's request was completely justifiable. Was it the wrong choice? Absolutely, but as they say: hindsight in 20-20.
