Generative Ambient Music Technique with MIDI FX in Ableton Live 11

Another powerful technique for creating Generative Ambient music in Ableton Live 11, this time using MIDI FX. A few videos back we explored another Generative music technique which involved using Follow Actions to generate random notes that we then locked into a scale. This time we are using the power of MIDI fx in different ways to generate random musical notes that will once again be locked to the scale of our choosing to enhance its musicality and tonality. If you thought this was an awesome technique, then please like, comment, & subscribe.

You have something special here, great job! I've been searching for videos like this on KZbin for a long time, I don't know why but the videos I find are a bit repetitive and they don't reach a point that I really appreciate... until I found your channel, your videos They are great man, keep going!

I've tried to make this on my own and from my experience, using the chord, arpeggiator, random and scale devices in the same chain plus mapping some parameters to max for live lfo is the perfect way to make generatve ambient music, great tutorial ❤

Hey there, thanks for the comment! Yes, adding the max for live LFO device is a fantastic addition. I'm sure you already know this, but apply that LFO to the Arpegiator "Style" chooser and set the rate very low and use the noise oscillator and it will very slowly randomly select through the different arp styles. I also like using the Velocity now to generate random velocities to make the randomly generated notes have more dynamism to it. You may want to check out the video I did on "Follow Actions" as we do a similar thing but using a different technique.

@@Jemeneye7 oh wow didn't think about that trick! yet i found out that using free rate in the arpeggiator is a very good way to make ambient music since it has no clear tempo. definitely will check that video out, thank you for your response ❤

Re: The arp/rndm issuel the devices are fundamentally fine and doing what they are designed to do.... What's happening is; if the rndm is first then you have one randomised note being kicked out and then arp'd until you let go of the key (i.e. lots of instances of the same note). Whereas if you have the arp first it kicks out a succession of instances of the same source note; each of which hits the rndm device and gets randomised individually....... All the fun of signal flow logic. :)
