Lightroom / ACR just added "Generative Remove" to allow you to do advanced cloning right on your RAW file, non-destructively!

I'm been asking for this for years in Adobe surveys. So glad they finally added it finally. It works awesome.

Wow. Just gave it a try. It IS excellent, at least so far. I'll say that it will probably allow me to stay in LR more often as alot of routine cloning and clean-up just didn't come out as desired.

I wish A.I. didn't exist, but if I have to live in that world I may as well get accustomed to using it. Thanks for the awesome video Greg.

I would only use generative ai for the major removals. It's using up your credits. Where in Photoshop the remove tool doesn't use credits.

Is there a resolution limit to how big an area can be removed, say like the 1024x1024 resolution limit in AI Generative fill?

I'm not sure what the actual limit is, but it hasn't been a problem for typical repairs I've tried. I did just tried to replace half a Nikon Z7ii image and that isn't nice. So there is clearly a limit, but I haven't found it in practical use yet. The issues I've seen have been more content specific (human faces, feet, etc aren't great with detail).

Go to www.adobe.com/, log in if needed, then click your avatar at top-right of the site to see how many remaining monthly credits you have. With my various tests, I hammered generative remove pretty hard and see that I still have 120 out of 250 monthly credits remaining (some plans have higher monthly maximums). Looks like 1 credit is used per use, the official credit usage is listed at helpx.adobe.com/firefly/using/generative-credits.html

So what do you do to clean up the areas where you removed the branches ?? You can see tracks where the branches used to be. Especially on the first branches you removed.

If I weren't trying to keep the pace from being too slow for a video, I'd just spend more time there with the same approaches I showed. Try variations, run the tool again, use a secondary tool like the healing brush, etc. I can't think of any real tricks I didn't show in the video or mention in the written version of the tutorial linked in the description. I did a test run before the video and felt the results were very clean, but it's nearly impossible to demo something complex exactly the way you'd do it when you're just focusing on the work and not trying to explain it. This is an image I could fully fix in RAW, even if you saw a few little issues in my recording (which wouldn't surprise me, I wasn't stopping to review closely while I was explaining). If you exhaust all the options and it still isn't good enough, then you can clone in PS. But it would still be a huge benefit if you got it 80-90% done in RAW vs risking total redo for any destructive cloning in PS. And this isn't even an official release yet, so it should just keep getting better on its own too.

Am I missing something? I have Lightroom, Photoshop, and ACR all update to the latest versions, and Generative AI shows up as an option in Lightroom but not ACR? Do I have to do something else to enable the feature in ACR?

My bad. I keep forgetting that when you install a new major version of PS, CC doesn’t automatically uninstall the old version. I had v.25 installed, but I was still running 24.

Does this impact your monthly 100 credits?
@omnirhythm
@omnirhythm 2 ай бұрын
I just checked and yes it does - and it's very costly. Every brush stroke is counted separately even if you hit apply only once. This is quite scummy as Photoshop's Remove tool works faster, just as well and without taking a credit hit.

The PS tool is destructive. It may produce great results, but it isn’t the same thing as you may end up doing more work. Have you seen specifics on price? Past features were free at any level of usage, but required payment beyond a certain point if you wanted to ensure highest speed response from their servers. I would not be surprised to have cost, usage, or speed restrictions on any service running in the cloud, there’s a real cost there. Ideally, we’d be able to run these sorts of things on the local device, but there are good reasons for both approaches and it varies.

All these AI features are fantastic but… what happens to the concept of photographic proof? “This subject was here at this time in this situation.” We need the manufacturers to provide, embedded in the raw image, a digital fingerprint and a thumbnail image of the original. Any image found on the net without this fingerprint is merely a “work of art”.

Robert Heinlein created the concept of a “fair witness” in his novel “Stranger in a Strange Land”. Today’s technology can do this now in our digital cameras.

The Content Authenticity Initiative is working on that. It isn’t ready yet, but moving towards supporting that kind of credibility for original work vs that which is edited.

To expand on Greg’s correct answer: Adobe is working on a new feature called Content Credentials, which Adobe apps can use to includes authorship and editing metadata based on the open, industry-wide Content Authenticity Initiative standard. You can try it out right now in Photoshop, there are Adobe help documents to explain how it works. Adobe has a very strong economic motivation to support CAI and its tamper-evident provenance metadata. A significant portion of Adobe income comes from large businesses who do not want to get tangled up in lawsuits regarding image rights, so they want Adobe to give them some kind of trustworthy authentication for the images they use or create. So the digital audit trail you are asking about is something that Adobe already thinks is needed for AI features to be accepted by their largest customers. If you look up the Content Authenticity Initiative, you will find that it involves companies, nonprofits, and of course news organizations, who are also greatly concerned about ways to verify image authenticity in the age of AI.
