Most generator problems are preventable if you do the basic maintenance. I'll tech you how to service your own Generac Generator and test it. I'm a little harsh in the beginning because I want to drive my point home, some people don't learn by talking sideways, I'm straight to the point! This is the only DIY generator video I have made and I am not your technical support. please contact your local Generac dealer if you have issues. As always, do all these things at your own risk, they are dangerous and they can cause loss of life and property damage. You've now been notified.

This is great! Last October, we had a Generac 14kw installed at our cottage in northern Michigan. The operation of this generator is reporting back to us via WiFi and we are not there this winter to look in on it, but it is keeping the cottage powered when we loose power so frequently. It is important for us to be able to understand how the generator works and what we can do to maintain it. Thanks for all your home standby generator videos.

First let me say you’re great. Love watching your videos, learn so much from you and have the utmost respect for you. Not sure if I would have even touched that generator because it’s a liability issue. Windows are way to close to the generator. Generac recommends 5’ from any window, door or air intake and 3’ working clearance on sides and front.

Thank you for the maintenance review and tips. My 2003 unit is in Northern Michigan. From previous videos U have given me a very clear understanding how these things operate and their issues. I do all my maintenance myself since I’m a very remote farm. For survival I have to be self reliant and I’m well trained technician and engineer. Fortunately, I don’t have any critical loads (home is super insulated) that need to be attended too so I will operate the generator manually (once a day) for larger loads, and to charge a battery with inverter used for light loads during an outage. Plan to add a solar system in the future. Looks like at the end of the video U may have left the quart oil bottle in the generator compartment since you’re working with the camera. Great explanation of all the details involved with important safety notifications.

I leave the oil for the owner, because it's an air cooled motor it will naturally burn more oil than a liquid cooled motor. I'm doing a review on a solar generator real soon. It's 3600 watts RMS and 6000 peak, I also have a 400 watt solar panel to charge it. This sounds about what you'll need. I ran the whole house with it, the only issue is you need to use power management if you want it to last. It has a 3600whr battery, the load test showed it tested at the listed rating when l tested it with a continuous 1200 watt load, it lasted about 2.1 to 2.5 HR. I did a review on a smaller solar generator a few months back that was 1200watts rms, with a 9xx watt hr battery. It did fairly well too.

It really depends, dirt can cause major issues if it’s running, the vibration of the dirt in the windings can cause it to eat through the insulation. Another possibility is getting degreaser or some sort of chemical like battery acid in the windings or over loading the generator.

One question to you and everyone, I inherit a Generac generator from the previous owner, the battery currently connected is a 34 battery but the manual says this generator needs a 26R battery. Having at least 525 cold cranking amps for most air-cooled generators is the most important thing, the number you're referring to is the physical size of the battery and the dimensions.

If the oil is brand new and the oil filter is brand new, then if there are contaminants in there, it's probably from the oil filter. Even then worst case scenario to catch it on the other side of the filter as it circulates through. I don't necessarily think filling the oil filter in advance is that big of a deal either but it's just something that made sense so I just started doing it.

Rule of thumb on those filters. Oil the gasket (some call it an o-ring, but it's usually flat, so it's a gasket). Thread the oil filter into place until it just touches. Then rotate the filter _three quarters_ of a turn. In 36 years of working on my own cars (IT consultant, not mechanic), I have had _one_ brand of filter back off. Funny enough, it's the one that other people all swear by, rather than at. Wix. Luckily, I caught it on my wife's car when it was just dripping, and it hadn't popped out. I will say that when I hit something that I've paid for that has a "locked" area - I scream bloody murder at the manufacturer. I understand not making it -easy-, but it's -mine-, not theirs. If they want to hold that code, then they need to do the service on it for me for nothing. I've never failed at getting the access I want.
