Genesis 32-33 Who did Jacob really Wrestle with?

The lord works in mysterious ways... So glad I found this channel. I've just finished my second read-thru of Genesis, as a first time Bible reader. When I got done with this part, I had to go back a few times and ask myself, "What the heck even just happened?" Because it sort of comes out of nowhere (and then his name is changed to Israel, again very suddenly) This video helped so much for me to understand the implications of this section of Genesis. Thank you so much for making useful content like this - KZbin needs more of it. Less junk in 2024.

My humble understanding of this story was man’s eternal contention and struggle with understanding God. No matter how hard he tries Jacob can not overcome his “opponent”. We see the match is so uneven that the “opponent” dislocates Jacobs hip with a single touch. If like Jacob we do not let up and despair God will bless us, even if we have no chance of grasping him.

I really like this interpretation. It’s a great message of how we continue to try to understand the divine but always fall short. Ultimately it comes down to faith.
