First: Thanks for all ur reactions. Now my list S: SEBTP (which imho is the best Album of all times) , The Lamb, Foxtrot, Nursery Crime, A: Trick, W&W, Trespass B: Duke, And then there were 3, GENESIS, From Genesis to Revelation, We cant dance, Invisible touch C: Calling all Stations D: Abacab Seems I am very much in favour of the classic 5 piece. I like these album tier rankings, JP. It was fun watching you rank these. Never thought of WInd and Trick as companion albums. Wind has it's own vibe and creates an autumn feel. I would put it in the top tier. A fantastic album to listen to start to finish on a good system. Always find reviews of And Then interesting. Many reviewers put it down and then talk about how great the songs are. Like all Genesis albums some tracks are better than others. It shows how talented these guys are to make a great album after losing Gabriel and Hackett. Again, great to listen to on a good system. Hackett is one of the best guitarists on the planet, but when I listen to these songs he is not missed. This album works just fine without him and creates a captivating winter mood, and would be more fitting near the top of the rankings.

Yay, I'm glad you did this, as Genesis is my favorite band. I actually really agree with a lot of what you said. The Lamb is my favorite album ever, so I'm glad you put it up there. As for differences, A Trick.., W&W, and Foxtrot would be in S for me. ATTWT would be in A behind Selling England. Duke would be down in B (Misunderstanding ruins it for me) and Abacab would be up in B as well (my love for Abacab would probably be my most controversial opinion, and I love Keep It Dark, so agree to disagree lol). I agree with the other stuff. Their very first and very last would be in the D category for me and WCD would be in B as well (also controversial....). Thank you for your updated opinion!

I agree with you both. Abacab does have it's missteps (I'm looking at you, "Whodunnit?"), but it's got some great music on there. I'm actually a big fan of Keep It Dark and Another Record. To me, AR is a solid way to end the album, kind of the aural equivalent to last call at the bar, imo. WCD is a solid album too, but doesn't grab me the way Invisible Touch does. That's probably a result of IT being released right sbout the time music was really hitting for me and it being my first real exposure to the band, combined with hitting at the right time when I was about 7 or 8.

Love your content JP. Convinced nobody can top the randomness of my Genesis tierlist: *S* And Then There Were Three/A Trick of the Tail *A* Selling England by the Pound/Wind & Wuthering/Duke *B* We Can't Dance/Trespass/Nursery Cryme *C* Foxtrot/Invisible Touch/The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway *D* From Genesis to Revelation/Genesis/Abacab/Calling All Stations Yeah I've definitely somehow found a way to offend every type of Genesis fan one way or another there. ATTWT is to me their ultimate atmospheric winter album. Always surprised by the lukewarm reputation that one has. ATOTT is the band's storytelling at its finest. We share very similar A tiers and I'm glad someone else appreciates Duke's incredible blend of moody Phil Collins with some of Mike Rutherford's best work. Think you'd appreciate parts of We Can't Dance which surprised me when I sat through it because while very poppy felt like it had traces of Duke in its DNA. Hot take: Supper's Ready is just fine. There, I said it. Don't think it's the Magnum opus it's made out to be which is very much Firth of Fifth to me. Definitely gonna earn the ire of Peter Gabriel evangelists too by being one of those who thinks TLLDOB is musically sophisticated and ambitious but ultimately a stuffy mess with an ocean of filler. Think I'd get laughed out of 'classic Genesis' circles for saying I actually listen to more of Invisible Touch (the last three tracks are my Genesis guilty pleasure) than Broadway (only Fly On A Windshield and Carpet Crawlers get repeat listening in my house). Would be interested to know your top-five tracks someday!

Well played JP. I LOVE mid term Genesis but for me the standout single track is Firth of Fifth. Can I remind you of a totally disassociated request, a 'one off'? John Miles 'Music'... (at the proms). A simple fusion of rock, orchestra and choir, a brilliant and moving live performance you can check out on YT. Hit single in '76 is OK but 'live' has a bit extra despite the pauses. He died a couple of years ago, but this lives on.

I was about to go to bed until I saw this video in notifications. There will be no sleep until I watch this. It's great to see another 'Seven Stones' fan. 'Nursery Cryme' might be on my S tier if its production was a bit cleaner. 'The Lamb' has always been my number one so that won't change. As a Gabriel-era troglodyte I put 'Foxtrot' and 'Selling England' ahead of 'Trick' and 'Wuthering' although I like those albums very much. I would put 'Trespass' just behind those two post-Gabriel gems. The rest of your list is very close to mine. Being very familiar with the three you haven't heard I don't think they will threaten the top tier albums. I do have a soft soft for 'Genesis to Revelation' though. Man, great idea. A little bit early for me to provide you all the information, I am going over each album over and over because when I was younger I liked them but too young to appreciate them until i heard The Musical Box and decided Nursery Cryme is the one. I have been listening to the first album this year more than ever. And selling England by the pound is very good, but I have to say all of these albums are all good. I even got my children to do a first kids review on The Musical Box, and a series based on the front cover and song on my channel, but man this is a good idea. Right now though oddly enough ….but I have to say my mind will change later…. This is my top three for now: 1: from Genesis to Revelation Because of the early psychedelic prog rock sound, awesome 2: Invisible Touch even though I really liked the earlier albums I think Phil Collins and the band is at their best and every track a hit 3: Nursery Cryme Me and the kids at home have a few favourites here, and we play them loud. I think when I discovered the first track two years ago I thought it was the best track ever written. Thanks 🙏

I really enjoyed this type of video, JP. I'd be up for more of these. My rankings don't really match yours, but that's the beauty of music. S-tier for me would be SEBTP, Duke, and W&W. A-tier would be Invisible Touch, Trick, Nursery Cryme. B-tier would be Shapes, Abacab, WCD. C-tier is Foxtrot, Lamb, ATTWT, Trespass. D-tier is Stations,l and Revelation. That's probably a result of me growing up with the poppier side of Genesis before discovering their prog work. I love both periods, though. Calling All Stations for me suffers from not having Phil involved. Nothing against Ray Wilson, he did a great job and sounds a little like Phil and Peter at times. Invisible Touch The others I don't know much about but I will say their first album " In the beginning" is good for an album of its Era. Trespass takes them into the direction that captivated me. I actually love Trespass. Selling England is my favourite album of all time. Ir is the album that radically changed my musically taste. The prog door was opened and it has never shut in my life ( 50 years after first listen) Firth of Fifth is absolutely wonderful. Foxtrot is great. Supper's Ready just gets better & better. The Lamb's story is just too weird for me, but it has some stunning music. Case in point, the Lamia; making love with snakes?? But the music is phenomenal. Genesis' later stuff doesn't move me so much but I live Domino.

At the time, Cinema Show was tantamount to Return to Forever, relative to everything else. Listened to from today's standards...it is still brilliant. Especially as a drummer, I should think you would be all over this. Where else a quality instrumental in 7/8? Then you add "Firth of Fifth", their masterpiece, and those two alone should put Selling England on top tier. It is by far the one I have heard most over the year, and was my first, thus special. It was fresh from the oven though, and so smooth it made their previous works seem like practice, and the much later work seem like pop. I had to give up, being a progressive ear, after a point. It wasn't progress. Other folks took up the mantle. Dead Can Dance. Listening now to Nursery Cryme, I can see why you set it so highly. So many great songs. Adventurous. I agree with most of your other placements.

Since you really like the 2nd album, have yo reacted to their track "Twilight Alehouse" from that era? I believe it was only a single or b-side or something, but it's one of my favorites from that era. Also, if you haven't done their first live album, for me, the live version of *all* of the track on that album crush the album versions... there's so much fire in the performances! That album alone moves both Foxtrot and Nursery Crimes down a whole step in your ranking system for me, since the studio versions sound so flat by comparison.

@@jonnykhatru For me, those albums had some great individual songs. 'Blood on the Rooftops' is one of my favorites, but as an entire album, I prefer the four I mentioned. I think they needed a couple albums under their belt to fully realize their sound, so by the time they started Foxtrot in '72, they'd arrived. W&W just has too much filler on it for me, and I didn't care for it's "more expansive sound" as Banks described it.

The top tier would be Selling England, Trick of the Tail and And Then there Were Three. After that it's picking out the decent tracks amongst the dull stuff, the indulgent stuff and the dross stuff (such as much of Abacab). Most albums have some really decent tracks, even The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, which at least led to Gabriel leaving for his stellar solo career. The first half of Genesis is one of their best album sides.

A minor problem with Foxtrot... you claim that "Supper's Ready" is so epic that it gives the normal position of the album a 2-tier boost... Which either means that you consider it to normally belong at D, since you are leaving it at B... Or, you forgot to move it from B to S, where it actually belongs! ;-] You see my problem? I'm wondering if you consider it so bad that even with S's R, you still think it's a B, which is rather harsh... Or if you just forgot to give it that obligatory boost... cause, ya can't just ignore the best track they've ever done just because it skews you tier list, right? lol Just playing with ya, JP! It's a fine list! ;-] If I had to change anything, for me, I would swap Foxtrot and Duke. Cheers!

@@jpirard they really needed to switch the name of the band after the ‘88 split. Steve Hogarth brings a different vibe but still too many argue about which is better. It’s absurd. Marillion just kept evolving over time and, while I’m partial to Fish era material, I found I liked Hogarth too. It just took some time. My friends and I were so sore about Hogarth switch that, when we went to the Toads Place show in New Haven in 1989, we left after listening to just 4-5 songs. Foxtrot is in a tier of its own for me. I feel like all 5 members are fully present and not holding anything back. Only track I have any problems with is Time Table which I think on its own is good but really just doesn't work for me on this album. I think Selling England is also slightly above the rest. Similar to foxtrot but I can tell when it's a Peter written track and when it's not. Not particularly fond of Banks' lyrics on the album, altogether though it's still an absolutely amazing piece of music. After that I'd put Nursery Cryme and Lamb. I love Musical Box and Salmacis but not a fan of Hogweed. Still an excellent album but not sure I can put it much higher. The Lamb has some great songs like Chamber, In the Cage, Fly, Counting Out Time, Back in NYC, Slippermen and my fave Riding the Scree. But there are quite a few songs I just am not a fan of so overall I can't put it above some of these other albums especially with the nonsensical story. B tier for me is Trick, Trespass, Duke, and ATTW3. Love Ripples and Mad Man Moon and there is some great music on here, but I again am not really feeling Tony's lyrics and there are some songs that just way exceed their ideal run time imo. Trespass is up here because it still has Peter's lyrics and it has Stagnation which is up there with Supper's Ready for me and brings this album up a tier. Duke is idk. It's still really tight but doesn't really connect with me consistently outside of Duke's travels and Guide Vocal. ATTW3 is imo Phil's best album as a vocalist and I think might be his best on the drums too. I don't like Snowbound or Follow You Follow Me and there are a few average tracks but I really like the tracks you mentioned and a few others. And then Wind in C tier. The only songs I really like on here are the 3 ending songs. Your Own special Way might be my next favorite. I think they were justified in becoming more pop after this album. Maybe Abacab is in this tier, I don't think it's terrible from the couple of times I've listened. Nothing after it has really made much of an impression on me outside of Mama but haven't listened to them very much.
