What a masterful showman. The contrast between Phil in Genesis and Phil on his own is so fascinating to me. There's some crossover, sure. But these earlier Genesis performances are a different Phil. And this may be the greatest tambourine playing in rock. 😆

@@jaygreen1970 no....what did it was....Phil wanted to be in GENESIS and have a solo career as well ....this stretched him too thinly.... he'd keep all the best songs for himself, then gave GENESIS the leftovers.... (did the SAME band who wrote Burning Rope/One For The Vine/The Lady Lies/Deep In The Motherlode.....write the song Whodunnit....?) I always thought a more proggy Sussudio would have made an unexpected GENESIS number.... Abacab and Invisible Touch had a couple of really garbage tracks on them....
@jaygreen1970 Жыл бұрын
@@volpeverde6441 when when the band got rid of Steve Hackett, that’s when Phil got his own way all the time, Tony and Mike, sounds like they’ve got bullied out the way and then the commercialised bandwagon started believe you me if Peter heading to lift the band field still be on the drums to this day, because Peters got a better voice of him. He’s a bit of front man plus if you be honest time is a lot better I don’t feel because all the record you’re on about 90% of them were written by Tony Banks. All commercialise stuff was written by Phil all the stuff that makes your eyes cry it’s awful don’t get me wrong, I do like Phil, I had seen him in concert over 40 times. I’ve seen Genesis in concert 29 times in total. I’m too young to have seen them in the great era. I really wish I could’ve seen six of the best because that is by far the best buy ever worth and by far the best record ever written ever performed by the group, no doubt about it, it’s supper is ready in millions of miles then outside the second best track would be afterglow which is a tiny banks record. Nothing to do with Phil, just like supper is ready is he had minimal minimal impact in both of them tricks
@volpeverde6441 Жыл бұрын
@@jaygreen1970 I prefer Phil singing.... I loved Supper's Ready and the Lamb album....but Gabriel's lyrics and weird flower/watcher/slippermen/bollock costumes were too much for me.... GENESIS albums were my favourite between TRICK and DUKE.... but I do agree with you that when Steve Hackett went....the prog/Seconds Out sound was lost.... Tony and Mike started writing shorter poppy songs....the last great prog moment was DODO/LURKER.... ....then short hair and stadium rock/pop replaced patchouli oil and denim cut-offs.... saw them at Sheffield 1980 and they still slipped a few owd uns in there....

Phil Collins has openly said that he is not proud of much of the early genesis material, and is much happier the way the songs are written now. Which in my opinion means he doesn’t like much of the early songs because he had virtually no hand in writing them. But when he managed to turn Genesis into a pop band by pushing his own agenda now he is happy. Also I think he always wanted to be a pop star as he has slagged off bands like Yes and Pink Floyd by calling them Dinosaurs.
