I wish I was able to go to see them on their duke tour. I was a bit young at the time but fell in love with their music a year earlier when a friend introduced me to their TOTT and W&W albums. It was so different from the pop stuff that was being played on the radio. It opened my eye to complex music and talented musicians. I got to see them on their Abacab tour and saw them live every chance I got. What a talented bunch or guys. And now I can’t wait to see Peter Gabriel in about a month !!

1972 -1978 was better! For one thing Tony's 1980's keyboards don't match the glorious Mellotron M400, 8 voice choir, MXR Phase 100 and a Boss CE-1 Chorus effects pedals on his organ that were used in the1970's.
@JollyDeacs1110 жыл бұрын
Up for Debate but nevertheless, amazing band throughout.
@ChristianSchonbergerMusic10 жыл бұрын
yesshows100 Tony in fact continued using the MXR Phase 100 and Boss Chorus up til the Mama tour, but 1980 was the last tour with his Hammond T-102 organ. After that he used a Prophet 10 to replace the Hammond. Not the same. Tony really messed up from 1987 on (dead sounding leads with digital artifacts like the NED Synclavier - and lo res samplers EMUII). In 1992 the s**** hit the fan when he used crappy Korg organ presets (very likely "full organ" from the 01W or Wavestation racks) for the "Old Medley). And one of his signature sounds "the glide/portamento" was gone forever. I just like his use of the Roland JD 800 - like the lead guitar on "Fading Lights" on the "We Can't Dance" Album. Tony lost it completely in 2007. One crappy lifeless bullshit patch after another. He didn't even get the Hammond right. For such a tour I'd have the fucking best vintage console on stage - Korg Oasys, a controller keyboard and racks? WTF????
@yesshows10010 жыл бұрын
Christian Schonberger yup. The keyboards from 2007. I think he bought them in Walmart. Also how come during 1978 the power section of Afterglow Tony's keyboards sound like 1,000 voices. Never sounded like that again. Or One For the Vine. In 1977 Tony does that way better than 1978 or 1980. When Phil sings it's like a huge choir in the background. Never again after 1977.
@ChristianSchonbergerMusic10 жыл бұрын
yesshows100 Yep. 1978 was the last tour Tony used a Mellotron M 400 (Check the Chicago Uptown Oct. '78 bootleg which exists now in high quality). The 'Tron broke down and he had problems. So what? Hew had a ton of roadies and expert tech guys. Just send the M400 8choir - from the tape frame with 3 violins and brass - (which even has an organ-like quality to it, because the soprano voice is just one, providing that unique color - I have the samples). through a decent reverb or delay and you are there. After thaty Tony used the Roland vocoder with a synthesized choir. Awful. BTW: you might want to check my channel. Nothing to sell. Just fun and free stuff :-D

You said it...as Phil always said, he was the backbone of the live shows & there's barely even a shot of him. It would've been great if they at least cut back & forth to him when Phil was doing his tambourine punches at 7:50. In those early days, he & Daryl were kept more in the shadows, but Phil did take time in the shows to make sure that the crowd gave them their due.

Love this! Very unpopular opinion: I prefer Chester on drums. Much better pocket and beautiful fills. Of course Phil always owned it when he ran to the kit and picked up the drum sticks. Phil had found his front man voice, with distortion when needed. Great way to end the 1970s.
