Lyrics to this iconic track; 👑 Ooh please don't ask me how I feel, I feel fine Oh I cry a bit, I don't sleep too good, but I'm fine When can I see you? When can I touch you? Again and again I ask myself was I wrong? Oh but time's a healer, and heaven knows I've been strong Maybe we could try Maybe we would work this time Oh I can remember when it was easy to say I love you But things have changed since then, now I really can't say if I still do But I can try Cos I know the kids are well, yes you're a mother to the world Oh but I miss my boy I hope he's good as gold But enough of me, tell me how are you? You look good Oh you've lost some weight I can see, your hair looks nice, you look good Maybe we should try, don't say it! I know why But y'know, I can remember when it was easy to say I love you But things have changed since then, now I really can't say if I still do But I can try Cos I know the kids are well, yes you're a mother to the world But I miss my boy Oh I hope he's good as gold

Phil's First Divorce Song. When I was going through my divorce, I found myself FEELING Phil's song MUCH differently. He really nails the black void of nothingness that process is at times.

This but instead a break-up, I know what Phil experienced is not half as intense as what happened to me, But I really relate to his painful desperation, I've said these exact things to myself sometimes, "It was easy to say I loved you" is one that hits me

'Please Don’t Ask' is a touching love song written to a separated wife who regains custody of the couple’s child. Has the negative aspect of divorce ever been rendered in more intimate terms by a rock ’n’ roll group? I don’t think so.

Phil revealed he was surprised that such a personal song was chosen by Genesis for "Duke". It sounds more Collins than Genesis, but it shows the band was open-minded.

I eard that too. Maybe it was Mike and Tony's way to support their friend without having to tell him? Or simply they knew it was an amazing song

I think this song doesn't match the rest of the album. Phil Collins himself said that Please Don't Ask didn't sound as a Genesis song. In my opinion, this song would be better on a Phil Collins solo album. Evidence of Autumn, which was released as a single around the same time, would be great on Duke.

Phil sings: "heaven knows I've been strong" and then the band answers in chorus: "ha, ha". Just a little Genesis sly humor sneaking in. Love it. "Maybe we could try.....Don't say it, cuz I know why!" What a delivery. Tears.

The most beautiful ballad Phil composed. He poured his heart and soul into this song and you can feel the emotion through the lyrics and chord changes. This would not of been out of place on Face Value either which was originally intended.
@stevenpotts3056 Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. This is the best ballad Phil ever wrote, hands down. Some of the later ballads (some, not all) can come across at times as a bit "schmaltzy" at times (both solo and with Genesis). This one does not, however; the song is completely and truly an introspective and representative product of the deep grief and most difficult time this gentleman was going through. As a caveat, however, I believe it was correctly placed on the Duke album, as the Face Value album (to me) had a completely different style, or feel, to it; perhaps it was due to the extensive use of electronically triggered drums, or at times, the harder-edged and heavier sound that it had (for example, compare the overall production and sound of this song versus In The Air Tonight, from Face Value), as this is a much more tender, delicate type of song, perfect with the acoustic drums and acoustic piano that was used on Duke (actually, this was the only track on the album with an acoustic piano; on all the other tracks Tony Banks used a Yamaha CS-80 electric grand). Of course, both of the albums I am discussing had different producers, which makes a big difference as well, with Duke being produced by Dave Hentschel (I preferred the albums he produced) and Face Value by Hugh Padgham (I also like the albums he produced, I just happen to prefer the style of the earlier albums). Hentschel was more from the world of Prog and Art Rock, while Padgham was definitely more from the world of New Wave, which I happen to like as well. They are just different, that's all.🙂

@@stevenpotts3056 Hi Steven, thanks for your extensive info on this track. I must say I completely agree with you as you explained about the soft sound of this song being more suited to Duke. You know this track has some fantastic chord changes, all mainly minor seventh chords (I love the chord changes on the Bridge part before the Chorus I think it's a C#minor7 chord which hangs with a run down on the root bass notes). It really builds this song emotionally. Ah you mentioned the Yamaha CS 80 I adore that sound 'Guide Vocal' intro, 'Misunderstanding' too every song! absolute superb album from these guys. I love all the early prog stuff too and yes the producer is an essential part to the overall sound, you can definitely tell the difference between Duke and Face Value. Thanks again 👍🎹🥁🥁🎸😁
@stevenpotts3056 Жыл бұрын
You totally nailed it perfectly again, my friend!! You sound like a keyboard player yourself. I used to play keyboards when I was in college (at the time when this song was brand new - talk about dating myself!!). I too loved the CS-80 sound; I was fortunate enough to play one once back in the early '80's. Fabulous sound and expression it really had for an "electric grand," though it really was an amplified acoustic grand, since it used real hammers and strings like a Yamaha grand (unlike the steel tines and felt-tips that were employed on the old Wurlitzer and Fender Rhodes pianos). I believe you are correct in the C#minor7 chord ("maybe we could try, maybe it would work this time"). I always loved using a strong emotional chord such as that, with a corresponding descending chromatic root bass. I also loved the use of the maj7th and maj9th chords back in the 1970's. An absolutely perfect example of this is Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," from 1974. The entire chord structure and progression of that song is so beautiful, it's chilling!! The song just follows as gentle and smooth as a mountain stream. Thanks for the awesome comment on my comment!! Keep on rockin', my friend!!!@@TCBees73
@TCBees73 Жыл бұрын
Hello again Steve, 👋 wow you play too great. Yes I play keyboards, guitar and drums. I think we are refering to the Yamaha CP 80 electric grand, the CS 8O is the synth that was very popular too as you know for the time. Ah the Wurlitzer e piano and the Fender Rhodes my fave electric pianos too. The Fender Rhodes phasing sound is my all time fave!! Back to Phil, another great song I like to play is 'Against All Odds' another as you undoubtedly know was written during the Face Value demo sessions, (a very haunting demo version too!) same with 'Please don't Ask' demo!! I like Phil's style of playing using many flat/sharp chords with different root notes. I have a broad taste in music, my fave keyboard players - Richard Tandy ELO, Benny Andersson ABBA, Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman so many! Guitar players - Gary Moore, Ritchie Blackmore, Peter Green, Clapton, Hendrix so many too! I love blues music and lately getting into jazz. I love diminished and augmented chords which Benny Andersson used extensively! I will check out Joni Mitchell. Sorry for the long comment, get carried away talking about music 🎵. Great to speak to someone on the same page, cheers my friend keep rockin too!! from Ant👍👍👍🎹🎸🥁🎤👋😁

you know what, I fuckin hated this song when I bought this album in 1980. I was 17 and how dare my band sell out, singing sloppy love songs. I wanted synths and solos and rock songs about Elves living in wooded glades. I'm 61 now and this genuinely is the first time I heard this in 44 years. What a beautifully crafted song and what heartfelt lyrics. Its quite something.
