The New Culture Forum

Жыл бұрын

The West is the New Culture Forum's landmark six-part documentary series exploring the history, achievements and genius of Western civilisation. Inspired by legendary TV programmes such as Civilisation, Kenneth Clark's 1969 masterpiece, The West is a bold reminder of who we are -- and why our culture is worth defending.
Episode 1: Liberty or Death
Whatever happened to Western self-confidence? NCF Senior Fellow Marc Sidwell introduces this landmark series, and investigates the mystery of how the West lost faith in itself after the end of the Cold War. We then turn to the even greater mystery - how did the West emerge from primitive poverty in the ruins of Rome to dominate the world?
Debunking the myth that the West's exceptional achievements are founded on plunder and exploitation, we explore its unconventional and decidedly uncivilised origins in the rivalrous and individualistic culture of the barbarians and the patchwork of powers that emerged after the fall of Rome's empire in Western Europe. But the West's "long road to civilisation" would never have got started without a revolutionary faith from the East...
New episodes of The West will premiere weekly, here on our KZbin channel:
Episode 2: The Christian Revolution
Episode 3: The Rule of Law
Episode 4: The Invention of Science
Episode 5: How Did The West Get So Rich?
Episode 6: Is The West History?
ABOUT THE SERIES:
In six 30-40 minute episodes, The West offers a brand new, panoramic account of our extraordinary, unconventional civilisation. This is the great, and still unfolding adventure of Western civilisation: who we are and why it matters, retold for a new generation.
The West is written and presented by Marc Sidwell, Senior Fellow at the New Culture Forum and author of the NCF's critically acclaimed book: "The Long March: How the Left Won the Culture War and What To Do About it".

Stinks of Conservative propaganda. One sided with most warts removed. Christianity doesn't promote Liberty, it promotes Biblical Authoritarianism and a zealous superiority and meek inferiority complex socially and individually. It's a highly oppressive mindset. The more Christianity was questioned and abandoned after the Enlightenment, the faster The West progressed technologically.. -- Christianity is a deeply unnatural, fake world belief based on delusions pushed as The Truth. It shunned much technology and most thoughts about the natural world for over 1000 years. It was barbaric too, by decent standards. Christianity kept people as MIND-SLAVES, and the more they believed, the madder they were.. It's a brutally sadomasochistic religion which is probably why Brits and Europeans so readily brutalised foreigners - they'd been doing it to all non-Christians / rival Christian sects in Europe already over the centuries... HERETICS MUST DIE!

I'm an Anglo-Saxon and my family fought many bloodY battles on this land and how dare people now start trying to tear us down. We have graves dating back to 1200's (documented in our personal Chapel, but we are scattered before the 1200's in non-marked graves) that I can visit in Bampton to pay respect. So, how dare people now try and take our history away.

Because brother, they are despicable cheats driven by hatred and jealousy. We have been caught napping at the wheel because we took our great history for granted and this has left us complacent. They told lies to our children and now young western adults believe their lies and are shamed by this twisted history into virtue signalling to appease their guilt. Yet western history is full of more noble intentions than the violent authoritarian intentions that dominated the past for the rest of the world. The woke always revert to race to view matters, we should do the same because whites have always resisted the urge to mass exterminate of the Stone Age cultures they encountered when creating colonies around the world. even while our own women and children were m being murdered in cold blood by the natives. Had these lesser cultures had our weapons technology would they have treated us the same had they colonised us? We know the answer.

As a Muslim who has been studying Western history and thought intensively for almost two decades and who has compared Western civilization with other civilizations, including Islamic one, I am confident enough to declare that yes, the West is the best civilization in history. Western accomplishments in the natural sciences, politics, arts, philosophy are unprecedented, matchless, stunning, and worthy of much admiration. At times, I lament the fact I wasn't born a Westerner; I have a sort of inferiority complex, to be candid.

EXCELLENT !! It grabbed me, right at the very start, because after retiring over a period of three years making use of a backpack and BnBs, I set off to visit the major cities of Europe, of the countries I had travelled and worked in, thus knowing the people of Europe. What hit me and I have to say I felt quite emotional because 'every' shot you had of Rome, Paris, Berlin, London, Barcelona etc - I have visited and spent a good time visiting those sites shown. Having worked and taught many Europeans, the overall effect was to see those opening shots was to 'encompass' me right to my very core, what the West meant to me. The quality, content and range was easily on par with great documentaries I grew up watching the BBC (before becoming traitors). Comments given by your invited speakers were right on the mark. I have to admit that what I see every day on the news and in my time as a teacher (from industry) 1980/90s, who was defeated by left-wing teachers and their take-over of education with political correctness, causing me to leave a job I loved and was good at, I know very well the taste of defeat and what is coming, i.e. a Woke takeover - I am often pessimistic and greatly depressed what our future is going to be, that hopefully I won't live to see. I know I am not alone within baby boomers circles, but without a doubt this series I believe is going to give a fantastic moral booster for us. Furthermore, I will certainly be watching the rest of the series and recommending it to as many people I as I can

The Greeks were always speaking of India as the sacred territory of Dionysus and historians working under Alexander the Greek clearly mentions chronicles of the Puranas as sources of the myth of Dionysus." Alain Danielou - 1907-1994. ~ “Is it not probable that the Brahmins were the first legislators of the earth, the first philosophers, the first theologians ? The Greeks, before the time of Pythagoras, travelled into India for instruction.” ~ Voltaire. ~ Nearly all the philosophical and mathematical doctrines attributed to Pythagoras are derived from India. ~ Ludwig von Shroeder ~ It is true that even across the Himalayan barrier India has sent to the West, such gifts as grammar and logic, philosophy, fables, hypnotism and chess, and above all numerals and the decimal system.” Will Durant - American Historian. ~ The history of how Indian fairy tales and fables migrated from one country to another to nearly all the people of Europe and Asia and even to African tribes from their original home in India borders on the marvellous. It is not a case of single stories finding their way by way of mouth ..... from India to other countries but of whole Indian books becoming through the medium of translations the common property of the world .... many fairy tales current among the most various people can be traced to their original home in India - A.A.Macdonell". ~ The oldest Greek writers, observes Sir William Jones, allow that their mythologies were not their own invention (As. Res. III. 467) ; and it is now certain that the early divinities and legends of Greece were the same that were possessed by their brethren in India. If Hegel calls the discovery of the common origin of Greek and Sanskrit the discovery of a new world, the same may be said with regard to the common origin of Greek and Sanskrit mythology “ The legends of the Old Testament - Thomas Lumisden Strange. ~ Mark Twain, American author: "India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of tradition. our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only." ~ Will Durant, American historian: "India was the motherland of our race, and Sanskrit the mother of Europe's languages: she was the mother of our philosophy; mother, through the Arabs, of much of our mathematics; mother, through the Buddha, of the ideals embodied in Christianity; mother, through the village community, of self-government and democracy. Mother India is in many ways the mother of us all". ~ In the Vedic language we have the foundation, not only of the glowing legends of Hellas (Greece), but of the dark and sombre mythology of the Scandinavian and the Teuton" (Cox, Mythology of the Aryan Nations, I., 52, 53). ~ “I take issue with the old school of thought that the cultural and civic life we Westerners enjoy originated in the works of Greek and Roman philosophers. Instead the mind and soul that inspired our words sprang from neither Greece nor Rome, but from an Indo/euro homeland located much further north. In truth according to my studies the history of we Westerners does not begin with the Greeks, we were invented along with the Greeks by Vedic poet seers through their mother tongue, Sanskrit, which evolved into Greek and Latin, which are simple phonetic variants of it.“ Franco Rendich - Indo/European etymology.

I descend from princes and paupers; men who climbed up from nothing to achieve long term prominence for themselves and their descendants; owners of slaves and those who freed them; women whose courage shines through the fogs of centuries; poets and farmers, musicians and mendicants. They, as much as any of the living family who impressed me with their determination, eccentricity, and talent, guided me to a career as biographer and historian and to see western civilisation as something not to idolise but to preserve, respect, learn from and use as a place to stand to offer our contribution to bettering our world, leave our own legacy to western culture, leave something for future generations to build on - and give them a thorough grounding in why its foundations are worthy of that building. I’m moved and delighted by this series. Thank you.

"Freedom" isn't an end-in-itself. Too much freedom and tolerance are the conditions that allow for subversion from within. Freedom is the ability to refrain from destructive and sinful behaviour, not to do whatever you wish. Remember that it is "The Free West" that is falling apart because its foundations have been allowed to be undermined, whereas places with less freedom (aka with a moral core) aren't.

I'm afraid it's a sign of the times. A 3+ hour documentary would terrify some people thus reducing it's potential audience. Sadly, some people I know even refuse to view video's over 3 minutes long, only being able to cope with a 15 second swipe upwards! A series as important as these should be available in all formats, with the introductions removed from each episode I think an editor could streamline them into a making a great single documentary too.

My son is a big fan of the NCF so I’ve started watching. It is so encouraging and essential to see a robust, historical and factual argument for the West. My only slight criticism is I wish you’d put the names and professions of all the speakers on the screen. I look forward to watching the rest of the series.

It's long past time for a vigorous defence of the West in view of all the false claims made against it in this Age of Total Absurdity. I studied Classics at St. Andrews, Scotland, and I know what you are talking about. Keep it up. It's not too late yet.

I started working my way through Ken Clark's Civilization when I heard NCF was doing this series. The first episode has already brought more depth to what Ken Clark did. The short clip of Glenn Loury had me in tears, I'll be purchasing books by the interviewees, and I'll get back to Beethoven with avengeance. Thankyou.

England has made bad decisions from the fall of the Berlin Wall onwards:- 1. Labour’s failed experiment in mass immigration - immigration was never more than 50000 a year until 1997 but since has never been less than 200000 a year, a policy continued by the Conservatives 2. Illegal wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria & Libya 3. Baiting Russia & allowing USA via EU to get ever closer to its borders hence war in Ukraine 4. Allowing multi culturalism AND multi ethnicity instead of multi ethnicity but strict mono culturalism as USA insist upon 5. Allowing Zero interest rate policy and quantitative easing and the era of cheap money 6. Allowing people to live in parallel communities 7. Allowing people to live here that never learn to speak English 8 Not dealing with Islam

At 55 years of age, already holding a degree in business and economics, I spent 7 years (part-time) attempting to gain a basic education in history, politics, and how we got here. Wrote my own book that came to a similar conclusion as this video. Greeks to Romans, Judaism to Christianity, fall of Rome, Christianity carrying Europe during the Middle Ages, the Protestant Reformation, which brought the Protestant work ethic, etc., etc. In my view, a civilization is comprised of three layers. Common belief system at the foundation, economic system in the middle, and a political system at the top. And you can't get the top two without widely held common beliefs. It's this foundation that is being challenged -- in many cases justifiably -- but the current rhetoric has gone too far. Not only are loud voices harshly denouncing religion, they don't believe in God. And without acknowledging some sort of higher power within society and one's personal life, the lost tend to cling to ideology. Unfortunately, within a healthy civilization, political ideology sits on top of belief system. It's not a substitute. Kinda sorta what Nietzsche said.

nobody dares say how deeply steeped in Christianity the West was leading naturally in time to the acknowledgement of the fact that the locus of real value was the soul of the individual - the eternal part, and the notion that saving and nurturing THAT had to be the prime task of any pollity or social organisation . THIS is what made the difference - the life blood of Christiantiy.

What I don't get is, why are all conservatives fat-shaming body-shamers? Is it the law? Do they have to be so? And before anyone says it, no, not all overweight people are overweight because they eat too much and exercise too little. You think you're informed, and yet... 🤷‍♂️
