Today's episode is about gentiles. Why does god have a chosen people? What was his plan for gentiles? What does the bible say about gentiles? Can gentiles be saved? And the questions go on and on. I want to explore what the bible states about anyone that is non-jewish.

The Bible is a contradictory mess. Sam Harris and the reason project found near 70,000 contradictions between the canonical Greek New Testament and the Masoretic Text version of the Torah. Do you think the Bible is supposed to be that way? I don't. So here's how to remove the contradictions: During the Babylonian captivity the "harlot of Babylon" syncretized God's biblical titles, those being El, Elah and Elohim, to all simply mean "God". So from 500-600bc to this day El still means God, which is cool, but Elah also just means God... and Elohim...yep, just means God. Anyone think that creates a lot of contradictions in the Bible? I sure do. The Church even made it heretical to call Yahweh Elohim from Genesis 2 the bad guy of the Old Testament. This spawned "apologetics" (for the Devil). They did this because the Septuagint just said Theos everywhere that El, Elah and Elohim should be. So, the Greeks thought Yahweh was introduced as "Theos" in Genesis 2. The Vulgate does the same thing it just says Deus in all the places El, Elah and Elohim should be. Also, the Latin people thought Yahweh was introduced as "Deus" in Genesis 2. Modern English Bibles still do this with removing God's titles. Most just say God and LORD God everywhere. Try using the NOG translation it's on Bible Gateway and also there's a free App on your phone. Remember to use a different language when you want info on God's titles. Hebrew is forever syncretized. The Latin counterparts are Deus "God", Dea "Goddess or feminine title of God" and Dei which has two uses one plural "gods" and one possessive "God's" based on context. Genesis 1 is the possessive context for Elohim. True Elohim. Genesis 2 is the plural context for Elohim. False Elohim.

I think back to how shockingly easy it was as a Christian to memory hole these things when I read these things and winced or went "Ow!", like "What is wrong with this?" But since everyone else at church seems to "get it" you don't dare to bring it up, reveal that you don't "get it." They tell you it's a loving god, so it was right to do these horrific things. So you disregard it, write it off, dismiss what the words mean. How what you believe can be so smooth and slippery that you simply don't READ what you read.

The key takeaway in my opinion is that when you make that realization that "everyone else gets it", and you hesitantly decide not to say anything about it, at that exact moment you too look like someone who "gets it", even though you don't. So how many of the people you were looking at and taking cues from were only acting the part because of all the people THEY were looking at and taking cues from? It's entirely possible that if everyone at once spoke up about every Bible-related insecurity they had, 90% of the people in the community would ditch it on the spot. Or at least start looking REAL close at that book for the next few days. But when only one person at a time does it, they get shut down by that fervent 10% and anyone among the other 90 who are still taking cues.

As an Ashkenazi Jew, these kinds of things are actually what really made me want to separate myself from the religious Jewish community. I once had to walk out of a Yom Kippur service because the things the rabbi was saying were making me feel sick. Not that I think most modern Jews actually believe these things about the non-Jews around them, but there’s only two options: either they believe it and they’re horrible racists of the most extreme kind, or they’re total hypocrites. I don’t want to be associated with either. Also, I understand why you apologize for your tangents, but I just want to say that I really enjoy your passionate asides. You have a real talent for parsing these complicated texts and putting them in simple terms to cut through the BS and really put on display what exactly makes them so problematic. EDITED: to say “separate myself from the *religious* Jewish community”

No, most modern Jews don't. Most of us are secular, as I'm sure you know. I'm sorry this rabbi was such a dick, but you must know this is pretty rare and that even few Orthodox Jews don't interpret Torah literally. Hundreds of Jews were just butchered...and Jew hatred begins with anti Semitic tropes. I'm not saying Jews can't be assholes. But ex Christians imo shouldn't be making this sort of content. Given the Christian history of perpetrating these tropes. @MindShiftSkeptic how about a video on Christian antisemitism? Which you know, was where it all started.
@gregoryrosenberg106
@gregoryrosenberg106 10 ай бұрын
@@kellebandea The rabbi wasn’t being a dick, he was talking about the theology of Yom Kippur. I’m not a self-hating Jew, but I identify with ex-Christians sometimes due to the disparity between what people say the religion is and what the religion actually is when you look deeply into it. It is especially difficult for Jews in this aspect since the religion is so inextricably tied to our ethnicity. But the Jewish religion is just as outdated and backward as Christianity, if not more so, and I respect MindShift for being willing to talk about it, albeit somewhat indirectly. Now, obviously Jews today are not raving supremacists who want to destroy everyone around them, and while antisemitism is still abundant, Christians are not inherently rabid antisemites. This is why I have no problems being close friends with religious people. I have not disowned my Jewish family or been disowned, I am a well-adjusted person who can separate the way people actually are from the way their stated religion says they should be. As Jews I think we need to be willing to have a hard look at religion that forms the backbone of our culture and community, secular or not, and decide if that’s really what we want defining us. I’m not sure I do. That said, what is happening in Israel right now is terrifying and it does make me scared for the future. And I do think a look into Christian antisemitism would be a great subject for a video. Although I want to say that it seems a little unfair to say that MindShift just reading what is written in the Bible and criticizing it is contributing to Christian antisemitism.
@kellebandea

@@gregoryrosenberg106 I agree with you about religion. I disagree I'm being unfair. There is an incredibly flammatory situation right now, YT is full of Jew hatred, and it was a terrible time for this video. He may just be criticising the Bible...my point is he's still criticising it through a Christian lens of reading it in English, taking it literally and cherry picking. Which isn't the way religious Jews read their own scriptures, even the fundamentalists. And he's chosen a topic that easily shades into anti Semitic tropes RIGHT AFTER the worst Jewish massacre since the Holocaust. Any other time it wouldn't be worth commenting on, but right now? No. And the fact he will not even attempt to consider what I'm saying shows a callous disregard, imo.

@craigsmith1443
@craigsmith1443 6 ай бұрын
@@averyarp7901 _you can't spin those scriptures in a positive light_ One does not have to 'spin' them. They are positive. Jesus went deliberately to Tyre, out of the Jewish territory, just as he went to Samaria, out of the Jewish territory, and spoke to women in both places, giving each what she asked for. Jesus did not call her a dog, and I note that you do not quote him doing so. Many Jews of the time would have done so; 'gentile dog' was a common term used by the less-than-compassionate in Israel (the Pharisees, say), so for Jesus to use it would have been to say no more than she had heard before. Yet Jesus did not use the same term. He didn't use κύων as we find in Psalm 59 (though there it's used of nonobservant Jews), he used the term κυνάρια, a pleasant pet-name for a pet dog. He is not calling her a dog at all, he's taking a term used commonly and pulling its teeth, a sign to her that he does *not* think of her as others might or have. In fact, he thinks of no one in Tyre that way. That's the reason he uses it as a general term. Both recognize something in the other: she sees in Jesus a 'son of David,' and he sees in her someone faithful and needy. The disciples tell him to give her what she wants and get rid of her, but Jesus stops to talk, as he does with everyone sincere, and then he helps. Ὦ γύναι μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις (literally, 'O woman, great of you the faith.' σου is genitive, meaning 'your,' and the verb 'is' is regularly dropped in short constructions, so we would translate it, 'great is your faith.'). She *was* rewarded for her faith. Jesus helped as he always does those who are sincere, whoever they are.

Even when I was a hardcore Christian, the way the Gentiles were often depicted in the Bible disturbed me. I remember thinking that they must’ve been bad through and through for god to have chosen another people over them. So bizarre how I justified that. It’s still troubling to me when I think of how many people rush to “protect” and defend Israel, as if to find grace with god by standing by his chosen people. I don’t say this to justify war against anyone; it’s just troubling to me that some are willing to murder (and defend murder) in the name of staying in good graces with a god. When I first understood the story of the woman of whom Jesus likened to a dog eating crumbs (I understand he wasn’t calling her a dog per sè), I thought it was harsh as fuck.

So long as those people have animosity toward each other, it will never stop. This may sound cold, but, I could care less about the war. Each side has brought this on themselves because they refuse to learn anything and leave behind the reasons they fight in the first place. When they fight, both sides commit atrocities and neither side is innocent, so I stay out of it and don't choose a side because it's not my fight and I'm all the way across the sea, away from that mess.

@@ReasonQuest _Obviously, since he foreknew who he would save, he foreknows those he will condemn to hell_ The Argument From Silence. This passage did not say that. Nor do you discuss the thoughts and writings of those through the centuries who have discussed this, showing that it is rather different from the meaning that you seem to want to believe. You apparently take a common view of a simplified Calvinism and present that as the authoritative conclusion of all the Bible. It is not. The word προορίζω used there is used either of ordinary peoples' deciding (Acts 4:28) or by Paul only of God for the Church, not of nonbelievers, so your inference is wrong. Sorry. It would be a lot less troublesome to just accept the Truth ('Your word is truth'). It's a wonderful plan for our life, which we only know when we live it.

@@craigsmith1443 what is less troublesome is not necessarily true. If I can’t take the Bible and as a layman, and read it for understanding, then God isn’t a very good communicator. I don’t read Greek. I can infer from silence. I can infer from what the Bible says (and what it doesn’t say) that God condones slavery. Easy. I can also infer what I said in my original statement. If God is omniscient, which I assume you believe is true, then he knows who is going to hell. Yet he created them anyway.

I feel like in many ways, God sees all of us as Gentiles. I love reading books and the Book of Revelations is the one that lead me to being an Agnostic. God creates the world. From day 1, fails because his creatures disobey him (I thought he knew EVERYTHING)? He fails the world yet again, leading to the flooding of the world in Noah’s ark. That wasn’t enough, so he had to send his son, who is kinda him, kinda not him, to sacrifice himself, to himself, to close this problem down for good, but then told his “prophets” 2000 years ago that, he already has plans to wipe us all out from the face of existence in the end because he knows we are destined to continue to go down this path of disobedience, using the very free will he created. We’re all Gentiles, folks.

Great video as always! When I was a child/preteen, I began doing extensive Bible study by myself, and this realization that yahweh was god only over the Jews, was something hard for me to reconcile. I always felt like the religion was never really for us (meaning non-Jews). It always felt as if we were trying to force ourselves into a club that we were not invited. I used to voice my concerns about that with my mom, but to no avail she just chalked it up as me not understanding context. I was so young yet I had this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that the old testament conflicted with the new testament so badly that I really had to have cognitive dissonance to not really see that Paul’s writings was nothing more than just a gentile who wanted to feel included and special with the chosen people. And I would be lying to say that at one point I did feel jealous because the old testament really made it clear that the Jews were the only chosen people for Yahweh so I always felt well, Where did that leave us regular people? I felt like god was a narcissistic parent that has multiple children but has only one favorite or a golden child while the rest are scapegoats he treats badly. Thank you for articulating something that was always in the back of my mind but once I started to deconstruct, I kind of just forgot all about this. I would love to see Christians trying to make sense of all of that but I already know it’s going to always go down to “This is gods inspired word and he can change his mind on things etc. etc. or it’s all out of context” lol. Thanks again for your work.

Perfect. You have outlined my thoughts beautifully. Did Jesus forget to tell us all about Saul's imminent different ideas? Does Saul outrank Jesus and god? By what right should we take Saul's word? This has always stood out like a sore thumb for me. My conclusion has long been that Saul created a brand new religion, with a "new" covenant and a pantheon of gods. Gone are The Mosaic Laws and Monotheism. Instead Christians pick and choose which Laws they follow and have created a Holy Trinity that makes no sense. And to rub salt in the wound Christians will proudly declare that "The Bible Never Changes".

Very perceptive comments about Paul, who is surprisingly forthright about his intentions with the gentiles. Romans 11:13-14 shows his endeavor is a cynical one, and that he is only an "apostle to gentiles" to the extent it benefits Israel, and any benefits to the gentiles are collateral. I just came from a video on how Yahweh, a then-Warrior-Storm God of the people of the southern near-east, might have first been recorded by the Egyptians who went up against *raiding semi-nomads,* so God's violent promises to the Israelites suddenly make a lot more sense. History shaped the belief's of the time, so if raiding-peoples believed that God was on their side, of course they have stories about their favorite god promising them favor above all others. It's even more fascinating to consider that, over time, Yahweh was partially syncratized and then utter supplanted another storm god, Ba'al, and was further sycratized with an ACTUAL creator deity, the wise and grandfatherly El. It's very similar to the Roman-assisted sycratism and mythic drift of Artemis/Diana and Hades/Pluto, both of whom absorbed domains that were never theirs over time. Diana gained status as a Triple Goddess like the Cthonic Magic goddess Hekate and both Diana and Artemis gaining dominion over the moon when they didn't start off with those traits (Greek mythology even had the Moon Goddess Selene). Hades gained an association with wealth through his sycratism with Pluto, who was himself syncratized with the wealth god Plutus. These traits, in turn, mess with how future generations viewed, worshiped and told stories about their gods. Yahweh was a Warrior-Storm God associated with the terrifying, flash flood-inducing storms of the southern near-east. When he was sycratized with and then later replaced the very similar Warrior-Storm God Ba'al, he gained an association with life-giving and death-conquering because Ba'al represented the life-giving storms of the norther coastal regions and had a legend were he fought and won against the Death God Mot. Finally, to increase his power and foothold in the region further, he was sycratized with a much wiser and more peaceful Creator God, El (his depiction was even changed, because Yahweh the Warrior-God was not an old man, but El was). This character progression can be somewhat tracked in the bible as well, even as Yahweh, now God, remains true to his old Warrior-Storm God origins. It's really fascinating to see the old stories and *know* the history behind the myth. The video I got the info about Yahweh from was "Who is Yahweh - How a Warrior-Storm God became the God of the Israelites and World Monotheism" by ESOTERICA btw. It was a fascinating watch.

Here is another one amusingly we can post the whole chapter because the entire chapter is Anti-Gentile: Psalms 2 "1Why do the nations rage And the peoples meditate on a vain thing? 2The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against Yahweh and against His Anointed, saying, 3“Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!” 4¶He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord mocks them. 5Then He speaks to them in His anger And terrifies them in His fury, saying, 6“But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.” 7¶“I will surely tell of the decree of Yahweh: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth as Your possession. 9‘You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like a potter’s vessel.’ ” 10¶So now, O kings, show insight; Take warning, O judges of the earth. 11Serve Yahweh with fear And rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest He become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!" "Let us tear their fetters apart..." In short the Gentiles are according to this book in chains to his "anointed". And since they want to remove it the biblical God mocks them and of course goes full wrath, I mean what else is to expected? So here we have another wonderful display of his pro Gentile attitude. What you don't want to be slaves to my chosenites? How dare you! Seriously it is such an utterly disgusting and despicable book. Deuteronomy 10:17 "17For Yahweh your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the fearsome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe."" Another wonderful display of showing no partiality. And it becomes even more funny if we combine that with quotes from the NT. Romans 13:1-6 "1Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist have been appointed by God. 2Therefore whoever resists that authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. 3For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of that authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same; 4for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword in vain, for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 5Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of that wrath, but also because of conscience." Here according to these verses everything in authority has been appointed by him. So the Gentile kings would have been appointed too. In (4) they are even called his ministers. So he sets them up and they rebel against him and he goes full wrath. Seriously the God of that book is according to believers the Creator of ALL of existence and that is how he does things? From my point of view this book is a full fledged mockery against a potential Creator.

Thanks for mentioning that topic. For me that was one of the most important topics which literally drove me away from that book. And also thank you to put in the story of Joseph because it demonstrates the sleazy nature how he "kind of" took over Egypt. All it needs is greedy people and especially a greedy ruler who stabs his own people in the back for treasures. A crisis is the only way to have an excuse to take possession away from people without violence. I think that there might be a chance that the ancient Israelites were actually the Hyksos. I haven't read that much about them yet but there are a few hints. They controlled Egypt and they were banished from Egypt (was it 2-3 times?). They had multi colored garments and please take note that this was something Joseph possessed too. Edit: Search for this video here: "Religious Jews are asked about the Talmud" There are some religious Jews who believe that they get Gentile slaves when their messiah comes, 2800 for each.

19:29 this is actually disgusting, my former religion's interpretation is that the Canaanite women was one of the lost "jews" that's why jesus himself healed her daughter. I can't believe that this is the simplest explanation to his actions. I can't believe how much of mental gymnastics I have gone through to justify this particular event on the bible.

You have to know the context of caaninites to god. They were always seen as lesser and in servitude like dogs because of Noah's curse. That explains his ignoring and distaste for the canaanites. Caaninites are still gentiles so I'm not trying to make a point against because this is still an example of how he treated gentiles and even said he was here for Israel. I thought I would put that out there how they are typically very racist towards caaninites. It makes sense in context and it makes you wonder how he would treat other gentiles.

As someone with Jewish and evangelical Christian background, this is an excellent video. What is happening to innocent women and children in Gaza is directly related to this type of religious belief and justification for land theft and genocide. And I feel the same about all the Abrahamic religions. They’re truly sick. I keep having these conversations with Christians and more secular Jews in which they express sadness about Israel’s genocide and say, oh, it’s so against what god would want…sadly, it’s EXACTLY what this grotesque god would want and command. Cognitive dissonance at its finest. 🤮

One of the greatest cover ups the church pulled was changing the meaning of gentile. Within the church today most uses of gentile are explained as "non believers" or otherwise non christians. They removed any racial/ethnic connotations to be inclusive to non jews, and thereby justify any bad actions against gentiles in the bible. Its easier to accept god or jesus ignoring someone when gentile means of a different faith rather than of a different race.

Love your work Brandon it makes so much sense, not arguable but people will 😅. Helping us to look at the origins from mythology. Showing us from the Bible itself, in context, that only one people group gets God’s,,both awful/kind, attention. Christians get to know the Bible it helps you see the exit from this cult. I finally read and studied and learned after an embarrassing 47 and a half years. Thank you for sharing your experience. As a Jewish woman this concerns me a lot, and I'm happy that thankfully most Jews aren't like that, even when they are religious. When I became interested in Christianity, and told Christians of my own negative experiences within Judaism, I was told that I am confirming for them that the Jews are no good. And their antisemitic reaction made me sad, because when an ex Christian talks about their negative experiences with the religion, most people don't tell them "I knew it, all Christians are no good". In reality, despite a few negative experiences, I can't speak highly enough of the Jews around me and their moral charachter, even the religious ones. If your comment was about negative experiences you had as a Jew living in a Christian community, some people would be sad and others won't really care. But a lot of people who read your comment will definitely use it as an excuse to be antisemitic, and that's just sick. Regardless, it's important to share our experiences even though some people will use them for evil, and I apologize on behalf of the Jews who treated you like a subhuman. I hope that they will realize the error of their ways!

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I think that a lot of this is a result of humans being a social species that's bad at being a social species. The actual reason that religion exists is to create a sort of social fabric between individuals. Ethnic religions are the most extreme variant of this since their primary strategy for social cohesion is to mark everyone else as an outsider. This is also probably why Judaism has so many odd and seemingly random dietary restrictions. If you can't eat with anyone outside of your specific group, then you're significantly less likely to socialize with, and thus, humanize them.

I have been saying this for awhile. I have a Jewish friend who was raised as a secular Jew and became an Orthodox Jew as an adult. He used to be a first-rate party host to a diverse group of friends. Not anymore. It is especially instructive to look at modern cults as well. They use a variety of strategies to make it untenable for their initiates to co-exist in two worlds. A specific example comes from the very recent 8 passengers story where Ruby Franke's sister cut off access to her children because Ruby's children were using cult language and continuously trying to convert their young cousins.

My grandparents left Los Angeles in the late 40s or maybe earily 50s to get away from "things" and my mom didn't find out she was a Jew until she was an adult. My grandfather told her she was "an American" and that was that. So, I'm a Jew by birthright, but that's about it (well, half my genes are semitic, from my mom). I think this is why, sadly, the Jews have been picked on, gastigated, harrassed, and in some times, genocided and marginalized and blah, blah, blah......I used to think, when I was a Christian, "Oh, yeah, the Jews are always under attack because Satan!" But that's not it. If you don't assimilate into a culture, you stay an outsider. It happens in other groups as well, but I think the Jews that practice orthox Judiasm take it to an extreme. I had a friend in highschool that wouldn't eat a cheeseburger (mother's milk and boiling a kid) BUT he'd still eat a hamburger (at a place that wasn't, obviously, kosher) so we could be friends as we could do the same things, go out to the same places. But, if he's been more hardcore, it's not that I wouldn't be his friend, per se, but I'd never had the opportunity to do so. This insider/outsider crap is gonna end really fast when the killer robots arrive.

@@michaelsbeverly There's a really interesting book that touches on antisemitism (mostly European antisemitism) called "Black Rednecks, White Liberals", and the author hypothesizes that a lot of European antisemitism is actually the result of Jews becoming "middleman minorities" (which means that they mostly existed within financial industries like banking) because the Catholic Church started to see most forms of money lending as usury. (Which is obviously a no-no in Christianity.)
@kalinora3901
@kalinora3901 7 ай бұрын
Well, usury to non-israelites was a practice in the bible, so those few that still follow this give the rest of their kind a bad name. And, unfortunately, even today, there still exist a certain amount of those groups in banking today. I have a relative via marriage that is from a jewish family. She mentioned that jews are very "clannish" (I suppose tribal would be another fitting word), even against other jewish families and groups. I don't blanket all jews under the same criticisms because this relative has been generous and helped me out a few times when I needed it. She's also a messianic jew (a jew who believes in Jesus). The only reason that her family never set shiva for her is that her clan elder viewed her as his favorite niece. When looking up the ceremony, it generally says a period of mourning for a deceased loved one. However, it won't say anything about it being used for exiling clan members whom, after the event will be considered "dead" to them. This usually happens for certain things such as unapproved marriages with gentiles, and other things. While she did break a few rules, it seems that amongst her particular clan, their familial bong is stronger than their rules.@@stephenmymomtoldmenottoput1459

I love Egyptian-Bible history study... The likely pharonic dynasty in the north of Egypt during Joseph's day were not Egyptian. They were a Semitic tribe called the Hyksos. Much easier to confuse who Joseph was when he grew up, and much easier to see how the rulers would be interested to have another Semite group come into the area. When the new dynasty arises, the pharaoh knew not Joseph and his deeds. And now had a potential fifth coloumn in Goshen, if the Hyksos should attempt to return.

Excellent points in the video! Your survey through the Bible of anti-gentile sentiment really shows the evolution and tension between the different authors. Earlier it seems Judaism was polytheistic or henotheistic believing each nation had a chief protector god to worship. Overtime, through all the different invasions and occupations. I think some tried to universalize their God and created revenge fantasies over their tormentors. I think the reason Paul attempted to convert Gentiles was because he mistakenly thought the end was near and he was trying to fulfill prophecy. I think the Great Commission was a later scribal addition. It does not fit the rest of Matthew’s gospel.

As a former Mormon this video is particularly interesting, because native Americans play a big part in their theology. I don't know if you're familiar with the Book of Mormon, but it's essentially supposed to be the Bible but in the Americas. Same God. The problem is, same people. The Book of Mormon makes a central claim that the Native Americans are the descendants (at least partially) of Jews who migrated here from across the sea in Biblical times. Therefore, they are part of God's people group and are deserving of his notice and preference. The Book of Mormon is not an attempt to be inclusive of Native Americans. It is an attempt to redefine them as Jews, who then can be included in God's plan.
