Yes, so many of us learned it from our fathers - As it should be! I remember my dad sang this to me when i was a young boy. I lost my oldest brother, his first born, when I was 12 years old, and I don't recall hearing my dad sing it since then... I am performing it solo this St. Patty's Day, and I'll ask someone to record it so I can send it to him - he is now 94. I hope I don't fuck it up...

My father’s best friend was a fine Irish tenor. The two of were cut of the one cloth and it was a singular family treat to be invited as a family to go visit his. The distance was far enough that travelling with a carload of little children, meant that it was at least an overnight visit, or more for a long weekend. Amongst my finest and most treasured childhood memories , is to hear him in my mind’s ear singing Danny Boy with all the energy of his very soul, as he went about his day, with his beloved setter at his side. It’s been a long time since last it was my pleasure to enjoy the household with his music and to hear his parents and in-laws speak Irish together. I hope they’re still enjoying their fine music the other side.❤

Just stunning. My dad and I would sit on the deck in the summer overlooking the water and drink scotch and belt out this song when we were reminiscing about friends and family gone too soon. When he passed and his ashes were spread I sang it alone. I always tear up when I hear it but this rendition made me cry. Tears of grief, happiness at a memory, release from so much stress that the world is in right now from the pandemic, that America is in from D.C., from the hate that holds the country, tears of joy from the pure beauty of their voices. Thank you for this. Tears are needed sometimes, they cleanse the soul. Put everything into perspective. Start a new day with a clean slate.

Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side. The summer's gone, and all the roses falling, It's you, it's you must go and I must bide. And take ye with my memory ever smiling Untrodden path, I'll tarry by your side And though you leave behind a silver lining It's you, it's you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow, It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow, Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so! But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be, You'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an Ave there for me. And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me, And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be, For you will bend and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

In 2004 I went through a program called "blue to green" for people leaving the other US military branches switching to Army. I had already gone through Army basic training but in order to re-enter I had to go through this program. Occasionally we would have time to take a break and be silly (but in an organized fashion). One of the guys, I don't think I ever knew his name, got up and sang Danny Boy in front of all of the soldiers and cadre. It was very unusual to hear such an old traditional song in the middle of fast-paced modern military training. We all chuckled, but it was nice. I'll never forget it.

I was, by chance, in Glendalough, Ireland last week at the Upper Lake where this video was shot. I recognized it instantly. This has always been my favorite cover of this amazing song. Now I even have a deeper connection to it. I don’t know that I’ve heard more beautiful harmonies than this.

More context please? Why were you at the Upper Lake?

What a beautiful rendition. As beautiful as your music is, even more beautiful is your gracious souls. The wonderful things you have done for those that are suffering stands as a testimony that the power of God works through you. Gentri has made a lasting impact on my life and the lives of countless others. I just want you to know that the World is a much better place for having you outstanding Gentlemen in it. May I offer you all of my respect and love.
