1973 here and I was firmly Atari! Even up into the Nintendo years

My grandfather bought an Intellivision (he was always a tech guy--he also had a VCR and a projection TV when nobody had those) and I swear he thought he WAS George Plimpton. He was one of the original "My system is more powerful than your system" guys. In retrospect it's pretty funny. But we loved the Intellivision Baseball game. We still have family stories about marathon games trying to beat Grandpa 🤣. The Burger Time port to Intellivision was really good too. But overall we still loved our Atari more. It had more of the arcade games, as you mentioned, and it was also what my friends had. People tend to forget that games were so expensive you didn't just get every game that came out. But if you had a good group of friends, one of them probably got it. You'd take your carts that they didn't have over to their house, and play all the games. Didn't have that with Intellivision because nobody in my neighborhood had one. lol

I wish Nintendo would make a handheld with all main Pokémon games, from original GB to GBA. Of course that would never happen, but it should.

I want a cart release of Tower of Mystery
@Aaron-by3ke2 ай бұрын
Astroblast is a much better game with the mouse. With my XO controller, I scored just over 1,000 pts. With the mouse, I got close to 12,000 pts. You can press the space bar to resume the game. There are too many 2-player only games in this DLC. I'd like to introduce my nephew to these old games my brothers and I played such as Armor Ambush and the sports games. Desert Falcon is tougher than the last time I played it. I'm hoping to see Intellivision games in a future DLC or in a whole new game. Desert Falcon definitely is worthy of a Friday video. One of the few non-licensed games announced for the 7800 40 years ago.

Okay, so I was up REALLY late last night, learning how to play Tower of Mystery. Here's what I've figured out so far: 1. The tower's rooms are randomly generated each time you reset. That's right. Roguelike RPG on the 2600, baby! And the game's description is maybe inaccurate about its limitations? It says it only goes up to four floors. That's if the TV switch is set to color. Sort of a quick, beginner game with little danger like Game 1 in Adventure. If it's set to B/W, the game will generate up to 26 floors, I guess? And that's if the left difficulty switch is set to Beginner. Advanced supposedly goes way bigger. I wouldn't know. I died on Level 13 to a pit trap in my longest run. Long story short, this game is fucking massive. 2. In the beginner mode (Color TV setting), you start with three magic items: Boots of Speed, the Scroll and the Hat of Vision. Boots are self-explanatory. The Scroll will let you view your Stat screen with the right trigger. The Hat is VERY useful. Make sure you keep it on you at all times, if at all possible. Why? That is what lets you peek through locked doors, as long as you line up your character's head with the little square (keyhole) on the door. But more important, it reveals traps and enemies that would be otherwise invisible. VERY useful. 3. You can use the left trigger to view your map of the floor you're on, which can show up to 16 rooms per floor. It will update with every room you enter. Use the right trigger to view your Stat screen, as long as you have the Scroll. This will of course show your stat numbers, as well as keep track of your arrow count, what dungeon level you're on and it will show certain items you have found that stay with you (Bag of Holding, ie the red thing you found, Scroll, Rope, Shield, Gauntlets, etc.). These items will either improve some of your stats, I think, or have other passive effects. 4. Arrows are your primary combat resource, and they are in short supply unless you find quivers, which in my experience are pretty rare to spawn. Also, you can't use them in battle unless you find and equip a weapon from the inventory at the bottom of the screen (bow, crossbow, and yes, even the sword uses arrows). To equip different items, hold the action button and press left or right on the joystick to put your little dot indicator under the item you want to use. This works both out of and in battle. 5. Now for how battle works. If you touch an enemy, you'll go to the battle screen. Move left and right to dodge enemy attacks. Now, either equip a weapon and press up on the joystick to shoot arrows or equip another item from your inventory. You can hold the action button and press up to offer the item as a bribe to escape. This is why you may want to carry a couple of Treasures in your bottom inventory, so you won't have to give up any magic items or weapons. If you have a Bag of Holding (red bag you found), any Treasures will automatically go into it and be added to your Treasure score in your Stats menu (right trigger), so keep that in mind. 6. Outside of the biginner (Color TV) mode, since you start with no magic items, you will have no Scroll, and therefore be unable to access your Stats screen (right trigger) until you find one in the dungeon. Finally, 7: The Lich of the Tower has hidden a captive princess somewhere in the Tower behind a locked door. To rescue her, you of course need to find a key to unlock the door. If you find the princess, you will be instantly teleported out of the tower. Rescue the princess for an instant win. P.S. Your inventory can hold up to six items, I think. If you need to drop something, hold the action button and press up when you have the item selected and you will leave the item in that room. It will be shown on the bottom left wall of the room and stay there in case you need to retrieve it later. If you have a Bag of Holding, you can hold the action button and press down on the joystick to put that item into the Bag, and I think it will get added to your Treasure score. And, that's everything! For now...

The Intellivision _was_ visually superior to the 2600, for about a year or two. It's an irony that will never be repeated in console gaming, but the 2600's architecture ultimately allowed it to showcase games that the Intellivision was simply not equipped to match-contemporaneously. The biggest thing holding the Intellivision back was the same thing that held 2600 games back for the first 5+ (!) years of its life: devs had simply not yet figured the hardware out. In the Intellivision's case, this never changed, and the console reached the end of its life before anyone tapped its full potential. As a concrete example of this, there were no 60fps (and precious few ~30fps) games made for the thing. But make no mistake: The 2600 will forever remain the most ahead-of-its-time console ever created, and games just kept getting better for at least a full decade after it launched. The Odyssey 2 actually shared a similar story. It launched in 1978 and was without question inferior to the 2600 even though it arrived a year later. But it came packaged with a handful of tricks (like a ROM that included the entire alphabet and some starter sprites) that allowed its games to hold an edge over the 2600 during the 2600's early, lackluster years.

Only the rich people I knew had Intellivision when I was a kid, or at least that is what I thought, lol. We were lucky to have Atari and I played it all of the time. I finally got the Intellivision II when it was deeply discounted, and I played them both. I wish I still had those systems!
@GenXGrownUp2 ай бұрын
It was about $100 more than the VCS. The ColeoVision was the one that I attributed to "rich kids" when I was growing up. 😁
@chrismckoy11022 ай бұрын
I desperately wanted a Colecovision, but never had one. My best friend next-door had one though so I got a few chances to play it. Mostly his dad played it though so it didn’t leave much time for us! The graphics on that Coleco Smurf game were absolutely astonishing to me coming from my 2600. I looked at the Smurf game the way some young kid today might look at hyper-realistic VR. I didn’t really get the Intellivision though - it didn’t have a joystick, had all these sports games I wasn’t interested in, and it just didn’t seem as cool as Atari.
@AaronC1432 ай бұрын
I have those Mattel Handheld games. The football one is my favorite. By the way, Swordfight reminds me of Star Wars, because the swords look and ignite like lightsabers. Might as well just call it "Star Wars: Lightsaber Duels."

The only annoying thing about this compilation is you can't in the library have a 'favourite list' :( I want to have all the games I really like & will play over & over again in a 'favourite list'(I know they have a last 10 played list but that isn't enough because i have more than 10 i love) :D + It would be AMAZING if they could have ET, Superman, River Raid etc etc on this to :( But they probably couldn't get the rights etc etc to them which is a shame :(

to be honest. I wasn't too impressed with the second DLC. the doc side of the first console war was interesting. but the M Network games. I was not too impressed. however, happy to see Video Pinball and Atari Basketball has been added. something else I've notice in the first of the two DLC. they included 3 games from the Sears Tele-Games line. I grew up playing that system. yes, it a Sears version of the Atari 2600 but man, it was a sweet system. I remember some of the carrtridge we own were Sears version of some of the game on 2600 system. Chase AKA Surround, Video Olympics aka Pong Sports. and Gunslinger aka Outlaw.
@GenXGrownUp2 ай бұрын
It has a few gems, but lots of 2-player-only titles that I'll have to find a friend to try out. I also grew up on an original Sears Tele-Games. Did you happen to catch my recent find of a year-one model? kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4SnZIl7Z81kgMk

Atari has put together a great collection overall with Atarti 50, but naming a DLC 'The First Cnsole War' and not including any actual Intellivision games (especially now that Atari owns them) is a massive fumble. Like WWE's WCW Invasion angle, where they tried to create a dream match situation without actually having/using the stars to do it. I might stump up the cash for is on sale, but I don't really want to pay full whack for a missed opportuity.
@GenXGrownUp2 ай бұрын
I hear you. As I discuss during the stream, it's unfortunate, but understandable. This is an Atari package, and all games on it were either made by Atari or playable on an Atari console. While having Intellivision titles would be fun, they don't particularly fit in with the theme. More pragmatically, I suspect a more Intellvision-focused collection is in the works for its own independent release at a later date.
