My name is also Neil, and I am the proud owner of a Mercedes CLK350 Elegance. It is a stunning car with wood accents and keyless start. It boasts 18" AMG alloys and a 9" Android head unit with wireless Carplay. I have completed a full service on it, but I still need to address the transmission. Unfortunately, I have encountered some issues with it, including the PAS pump failing and having to replace it again after only 7 miles. However, the third time was a charm, and I have also replaced four serpentine belts due to a faulty belt tensioner bearing, even though it was initially quiet. I have also replaced all the ancillary pulleys. Additionally, I have had to replace the front shocks, strut top bearings, control arms, bushes, and steering rack bushes. I probably spend more time underneath it than I do driving it! Despite these challenges, I still enjoy driving my car, especially for the heated and cooled seats. It successfully took me, a 57-year-old codger, and my 75-year-old dad to Shedfest and back, despite some minor issues. Overall, I still love my car. I am looking forward to the Benidorm challenge with Lee, which should be, let's say, interesting. Please give my best to Quentin (also known as "The Count" by Jezza), the delusional old posh boy. My Merc with the seven-speed transmission, as it is the facelift model like the 280, gets around 31mpg. The model is actually part of the W209 class, with A209 being the convertible and C209 being the coupé. However, the M272 (V6) engines have known issues with the balance shaft, apparently made by Cadbury's, which requires a full engine-out job. The five-speed transmissions also have a problem with the control plug being exposed to transmission fluid, which can cause them to fail, but they are relatively inexpensive to replace. Wishing you, Neil, and Lee the best of luck in your endeavours.

That CLK convertible was a great buy Geoff ! When you mentioned buying a Saab covertible I was silently nooooo! We are convertible finatics and have owned a few and still own two, but have test driven dozens. Although not the only brand to suffer badly from scuttle shake, Saab is probaly the worst. Saab sedans are really smooth and stable cars to drive and we like the look of their convertibles but everyone we have test driven starts shaking like a leaf when it hits a bump and the steering wheel jumps around as if possessed. If it happens when negotiating a bend it can be quite unnerving. However it may not be so obvious if you haven't driven a Mercedes or 3 series BMW convertible as they are very stable in comparison. We sold our overlarge house recently that I had been building for 40 plus years. ( Im a builder - what do you expect) As we were downsizing and bought a much more sensible and modest place we could afford to splash a bit of cash on a new or near new convertible for my wife. But having the same philosophy as you re new or newer cars and not liking having to deal with interfering hi tech safety crap I started looking at well designed slightly older models that were safe and provided all the comforts you needed combined with a degree of reliability. I was thinking a newer E series Mercedes when I came across an immaculate Mercedes CLK 350 which had been meticulously and expensively maintained with just on 100000 kilometres (60,000 miles) on the clock. We managed to get it for $15000 AUD (approx £7500) . We have had it for almost 3 years apart from installing a new battery and servicing it myself it has been brilliant. It may not be the classiest model that Mercedes has ever built but its quiet and smooth and looks magic with the roof down. The amount we paid for it would be about the depreciation youd lose driving a new car out of the showroom and even if the motor or gearbox blew up tomorrow we'd still be in front when considering the return we are getting on the amount we invested instead of spending it on a new car. Luckily in Australia we dont yet have your draconian vehicle taxes so it isnt penalised for its engine size. So it will be kept for some time yet in company with our BMW 1997 E36 328i convertible which is appreciating in value. If we need to drive any real distance we go in my 2.0 litre diesel wagon which can achieve sub 4.5 litres/100 kilometres average. (Approx 63 mpg. ) Makes no sense to waste money and resources on new cars. Just need to be immune to the marketing BS and not be fusssed about other peoples opinions.

We did this on a 3 week visit to Oz. It was cheaper for a relation to buy us an old junker (warning: even rusty old cars that are worthless in the UK cost a LOT in Australia) and then we got pay-by-the-month insurance and cancelled it after just 1 month, which is a bit cheeky but apparently this is normal practice over there.
