It's sad that it took his death to introduce me to his music. He passed away today and I saw his name on Wikipedia. Since I have interest in Australian culture, I decided to look up his music and was duly impressed with his incredible voice.

No that was his uncle Mandawuy Yunupingu. Gurrumul played keyboards, guitar and percussion with them as a young teenager and in his early 20s, including on the legendary anthem Treaty which he is credited as a co-writer for his keyboard parts.

Perspective is everything. If anyone from our dominant western culture wrote a song like this, they would be laughed out of the building and never have any kind of career. We all know why. It has a simplicity that would be deemed unacceptable amongst our own.

You seem to miss a lot from your perspective - he wrote the song, it's quite a sophisticated melody and he is singing in his second language. The voice is his own and the unique guitar playing is self taught. No more or less simple than many acoustic performers on the world stage.
