Geography Mapwork: True bearing and Magnetic bearing.

Using a topographic map 1: 50 000 to find a True bearing between two trig beacons and then calculating the magnetic bearing of the map.

Unless it it stated to calculate the magnetic declination, you will always use the mean magnetic declination of the map you’re using to find magnetic bearing 🙂

@EverythingGeography7 oh alright. So then about Magnetic declination let's say you calculated magnetic declination on a specific question.When asked to calculate Magnetic bearing, will you use the magnetic declination of the map or the one you just calculated?

@MichellePaulineBetha normally the questions used to be concurrent where you have to find the bearing then calculate magnetic declination then magnetic bearing. But examiners have been smart. So, you need to follow what the question is asking. If you’re asked to find magnetic bearing with no year indicated that means you will use the mean magnetic declination of the map to find you magnetic bearing and if asked to calculate the magnetic declination, you will use the one you calculated 🙂

You may have addressed it but I am confused on finding the Magnetic Bering. I understand that you add the declination (23° West) to your true Bering. But from other navigation videos I’ve seen a Western declination is always a Negative number so you would be adding -23° to 94° equaling 71° instead of 117° I am still struggling with grasping magnetic declination so it would really help if you could correct me. Thanks!
