No way, U-ganda be kidding me, #Uganda is up? Well "U" will have to ride a "GANDA-la" here once you see how cool Uganda is, and soon "U" will be "Gone"- duh"! Okay but for real. The most memorble thing was when a friend told me ”You see, here in Uganda everyones smiling, and you guys are not. We previously visited when I was 4, but I'm 26, going on 27 now and have to say, it was a life changing experience and the source of a whole new admiration for where I'm from. It has helped to put the country on the map in a positive way instead of picking the worst which gives a negative picture of not only Uganda but Africa as a whole as most people view it as a country as opposed to a Continent. Guys who haven't visited Uganda known as the Pearl of Africa should do so. Thanks all of you guys. Very well done job.

Love the episode, like all the earlier ones. One thing I found very interesting - they call a makeshift stove (mentioned at 12:08) a "Sigiri". I'm from India and guess what we call a stove in Hindi - a "Sigri" or "Sigdi" and in Marathi (my mother tongue) we call it a "Shegdi". Amazing to find similar words for the same thing in cultures so far away!
@LizAbwooli Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be surprised if the word Sigiri, actually came from the Hindu word, considering how influential Indian culture has been in Uganda. For instance we call tea , Chai, yes, that's our traditional word for it, and on other parts of East Africa. We also prepare it similar to Indian Chai. We also eat samosas and chapatis which are undeniably rooted in Indian Samosa & Parantha origin.

'Idi Amin is like Hitler'. Nailed it. A good friend of my father's got thrown out of Uganda aged about 20 for the crime of having the wrong skin colour. His family may have come from the Indian sub-continent, but he had never lived anywhere other than Uganda. Suddenly he was removed from the only country he knew or had ever lived in. That's called racism. It's also brutality. He gained asylum in the UK and ended up living a pretty successful life.

24:25, “Soccer” was coined by the English as a shorthand name for Association Football because the term “Rugger” had been coined for Rugby Football. “Soccer” comes from the word “association”. When Association Football began to spread in the US, we already had American Gridiron Football with a lock on the shorthand name “Football”.

You should do an episode on Antarctica. I know there’s not much down there but I don’t know the geography of it like at all other than there’s ice down there and I’m sure most other people don’t either! It he really cool to have a short geography now filler week video on where the amount where the mountain ranges and all the biggest scientific research stations are

31:39 For Ukraine, please mention Ochis' coffee eyeglasses: Ochis takes used coffee grounds and makes eyeglass frames out of them. Art should also mention the pole-vault dominance of Sergey Bubka.

Jesus I felt that deep breath at the end there for barbs, it's not the video itself that's gonna get controversial, it's the godforsaken comment section when that video comes out.

I love how in every episode, you bring out the joy and pride each country has in its culture, regardless of whatever trouble exists in its past (or present). You definitely did that again here! I hope you'll bring that attitude towards Ukraine as well. There's plenty to talk about besides the Russian invasion that makes it unique and strong.

Honestly, the discussion about Idi Amin, who expelled several minorities and ordered executions for others shows a lot about how easily autocrats can sweep their crimes under the rug. Kimi literally sees Idi Amin as Hitler (whether that’s justified or not I can’t say, but he definitely used public executions as a brutal method of suppression or even cleansing, and Wikipedia says that he is “considered to be one of the most brutal despots in modern world history) but for Pihon, that’s all good because Amin brought home the body of their king. That’s it. Not gonna dispute the importance of having the remains be returned to them, but apparently that’s ALL it took for the king’s people to completely support Amin and his gruesome ways. Goes to show how easy people are sometimes; give one kid a small cookie, and he won’t mind you breaking another’s nose for lunch money. He’ll just turn around and eat his cookie, pretending he didn’t see anything (or worse yet, acting like him getting the cookie was more important than the victim getting his nose broken for some bucks).

Great comment. Kinda sad that this episode has a whole minute dedicated to defending a mass murderer. His perspective was really interesting but not at all rational or ethical.

@@christophermccandless8352 yeah… Hat off to Kimi though for keeping calm during that part, I honestly don’t know if I would’ve been able to do the same

its unfortunate that Idi amin is portrayed by the Western media as being barbaric simply because of his stance towards the continued exploitation of Uganda by foreigners. many Ugandans are ill-informed by his political opponents but statistically he's the only Ugandan president who actually helped Uganda develop. I'm not trying to take away his inhumane actions but the incumbent president has done even worse. most people are biased because he was a Muslim and someone who actually wanted to develop his country after the disastrous colonialism. The Ugandan Airlines which has now been privatized was started during his reign, and the Mulago hospital was built by him. lets not let our bias hide the real facts of a person. He was the only Ugandan president who actually did something for Ugandans.

For the Ukraine episode, wish we could set up two comment sections: one for arguing about the war and another where Geograpeeps can just be nice and talk about culture, history, food, diaspora, etc. And BTW, I have maximum confidence in Barbs. He's done several wsr-torn and controversial countries. He concentrates on culture and the lives of everyday people. He reminds us that wars and hardships are not all the define a nation. Just watch his Iraq episode and you'll see.

I got the opportunity to stay in Uganda for a month and a half last summer for study abroad. It was amazing! We mostly stayed in a campsite in Kibale National park where we went to Fort Portal from time to time to buy groceries. We unfortunately didn’t get to see the capital but the river safari at Queen Elizabeth National park made up for it. The food kinda reminded me of some of my food (i come from an afro-latino background so lots of plantains and rice). I would def go back if i can

Next video is Ukraine :D - the timing - this is going to be awesome. The "I am trying to not be political nor controversial" vibe this channel is going for is going to make the next video VERY interesting. The way you said "next country is Ukraine" with the hidden sigh made me very excited about it in a messed up kind of a way.
