Hello, dear viewers. We're happy to present this new, more detailed video about the First World War. This will be followed by a new video on the Second World War. Two quick notes: 1) Arthur Balfour was indeed only a minister -- not prime minister -- at the time he published the letter to Lord Rothschild. 2) The name François-Ferdinand is the French version of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. We hope you like the video. If you'd like to support our mission of making history more accessible to the general public, consider donating to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/geohistory

This is one of the best summaries of WWI that I’ve seen or read. I think what makes it great is the changes on the world map. I’m a historian so when I read historical documents, I always check maps to mark as I read. This helps with understanding the historical consequences of what and why events unfolded. Kudos. I think these videos should be shared in history classes and the students should break it down by decade. Well done.

They didn't say anything about heroic Serbia and their defence. The fact is that Serbia is attacked from 10 time much populated Austro-hungary. Such a little nation which survived retreat across Albania mountains where all european countres wrote off Serbians. At the that time, all the allies was admired Serbia, how such a little nation survived and won in WWI. Serbia suffered the worst casualties, as a proportion of its population, of all nations in World War One. Out of a population of 4 million, Serbia lost 1.1 million people in the war, or 27% of its population and over 60% of its male population 265,000 Serbian soldiers died or 25% of all mobilised men

@milosbajovic2971 I beg to differ. Serbia is a little country with a big chip on its shoulder. They were responsible for WWI and they have contributed NOTHING to the betterment of the world: no scientists, artists, musician, architecture, mathematics, philosophy or other civilized learning. They were under the boot heel of the Ottoman Empire and they never evolved. Go back to your cave and start improving yourselves.

@@milosbajovic2971 yeah, the outcome was really much better than letting AU policemen arrest Dragutin Dimitrijević Apis that had already killed one king and queen of Serbia by defenestration in 1903. and then in 1914. arranged the murder of Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sofie while him being the guy that planned to diminish Hungarian influence in the empire by sharing the influence with the Slavs thus implementing a Triune Empire rather than a Dual one... Definitely worth it, losing 1.1 million instead of extraditing one single schemer and 2x regicidal maniac (also killing their wives, that was especially heroic). Also worth mentioning is that just 2,5 years later (still during the war) Serbs themselves FALSELY tried him for an alleged planned 3rd regicide attempt, now upon prince Alexander of Serbia in exile, and finally they shot him... Might have saved all of us 50 million lives, but no, let's fight it out...

@@crnidjordje8340 As early as August 1942, General Alexander Löhr, the Nazi protector of Serbia, proclaimed Serbia a "Judenfrei" ("Jewish-free" - a Nazi term for an area cleansed of Jews) and praised Serbs and Serbia for their help in ethnic cleansing. Nedic's Serbia imprisoned Jews and Roma in the following concentration camps: Banjica Concentration Camp (near Belgrade) Sajmište concentration camp (Zemun near Belgrade, then NDH, but under the direct administration of the Third Reich, occupation zone East Srijem) Cannon sheds, near Belgrade Veliki Beckerek, Zrenjanin Red Cross (in Nis) (30,000, of which about 12,000 were shot, the rest were taken to other camps) Dulag, (Sabac) Svilara (Pancevo) Paracin The "final solution" of the Jewish question was carried out at the Fairgrounds with the arrival of a gas chamber-van from Germany. One of the first such vans was sent to Belgrade. As early as March and May 1942, every morning except Sundays and holidays, a van was loaded with Jewish children, women, and the elderly who were told to move them. Seemingly kind, and information can be found that children were even given sweets on board, just like Ratko Mladic, who treated Bosniak children in Srebrenica the same way. In total, some estimate that as many as 80,000 people were killed in concentration camps throughout Nedic's Serbia from 1941 to 1944. The Serbian propaganda machinery, which can be compared to the Nazi one in terms of success, is gaining momentum, as is the revisionism of the genocidal actions of Serbian governments in the Second World War, similar to the wars of the 1990s. Revisionism, which seeks to make Serbs the only victims, requires attention and honest disclosure. Serbia needs to experience catharsis. While other countries, including Croatia, have accepted that regimes and individuals have committed crimes and are not trying to revise them, the fact is that Serbian politicians still live in myths and legends.

This video is amazing. Not only does it explain what happened in WWI in a nutshell, in doing so it reveals interesting things not many of us in the West ever really learned in school, like why the Serbians and the Armenians, who literally have very little culture or language connection to Russia, seem to share an affinity and alliance with them that endures 100 years later, long after the original reason of sharing a mutual enemy (Germany, and Turkey) began. Even the term "balkanization" comes from this. Such simple things lead to much more complex and grander things in the future. Without Russian aspirations and a without a weakening Ottoman Empire, the axis of Balkan politics might have centered on Austro-Hungarian conflicts with the Ottomans once again, and Ottoman expansion north of the Caucasus, "liberating" the Georgia, Astrakhan, etc. In an alternate 2022, the Serbs and Armenians may have shared their affinity to a more liberal Ottoman Empire who fought off Russian expansion and Austro-Hungarian aggression. Just one of many different alternate histories of course...

Serbs and Russians are connected a long time. Religion and ethnicity.
@lowellgallery6292 жыл бұрын
@Nemanja Jovanovic so you're saying Serb language and culture is more connected to Russian than, say, Slovakian or Polish? I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying. Serbians didn't have any *more* special connection to Russia than anybody else in Eastern Europe. Not until something specific occurred, it seems to me. My comment was that this video explains how that came to be, in that they simply shared a common enemy. That's where the *special* connection that makes them different from Croatia, Ukraine, Poland, etc. comes from. If you are telling me that Serbia has a special connection to Russia *before* 1900s, something totally different from Croatians, Poles, etc. I'm all ears. Because we do not see special relationships between Croats and Russians or Poles and Russians even though Polish is actually closer in language to Russian than Serb. We all know Russia came to Serbia's defense, but you're telling me they had a special relationship before the 1900s? I'm all ears...
@lowellgallery6292 жыл бұрын
@@jamesdeninojr.5041 as are many different eastern European groups. Again, listen to what I'm saying. I'm talking about the *special* relationship, unlike the Ukrainians, unlike the Poles, unlike many other Slavic groups with similar language and/or religion. This special connection appears to be *recent*, in the last 100-150 years, and it comes from their common enemy: the Turks and the various Germanies. Yes maybe Slovakians, Poles and Croats aren't Orthodox... but Bulgarians are, Georgians are, Romanians are. Similar languages shared in a few cases here too.

Montenegro is very underestimated during the First World War. They were able to successfully defend their Serbian brothers, letting them pass through to Greece without succumbing to the Austro-Hungarians. The great general Janko Vukotic said: “while the oak wood burns, know that last night was your last Christmas Eve, we have to die so that our Serbian brothers can pass through”. In my history class in the US we were taught that there were 5 main reasons for WW1: Alliances, Imperialism, Militarism, Nationalism, and Assassination. However even in my High School World History class they didn’t teach about the specific events that led to WW1. They didn’t teach about the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire or the German and Italian wars of Unification. I didn’t learn about the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) or the Balkan Wars which happened right before WW1. I’m not sure if they even told us why the Archduke was assassinated. At the end of the war school focused mainly on Wilson’s 14 Points, the League of Nations, and the Treaty of Versailles. We didn’t learn about the German Civil War, Greco-Turkish War, or the Polish Soviet War. The only conflict after the war we learned about was the Russian Revolution. I didn’t realize how violent the aftermath of the war was. I guess they didn’t want to focus too much on things that weren’t relevant to the US.

In my Sophomore history class in HS, they only talked about WW1 for 2 days and it was mainly just about Zimmerman Tellegram and Franz Ferdinand lmao. We learned NOTHING else about WW1 or any other cause of WW1

Germany: invades Belgium even though it’s neutral. Everyone: you can’t do that! Britain and the USSR: invades Iran even though it’s neutral. Everyone: I’m fine with that.

This representation completely ignores what happened in Central Europe as a consequence of the Great War. Although the video mentions Germany's loss of 15% of its territory, populations locked outside Germany as a minority, it fails informing the viewer of Hungary's territorial loss of an unprecedented 70% of its territory and, senselessly, a full one third of its ethnic Hungarian population, creating the largest minority group in Europe, decimating the country's resources, destroying its interconnected railway systems just to satisfy "promises" made France to its allies even before the war. These "judges" even awarded 12,000 square kilometres of Hungarian territory to Austria, which country dragged Hungary into this war and with which Hungary formed a dual Monarchy and was never at war during the Great War. Well, it is easy to be cavalier with the territories of other countries, isn't it? And instead of finding a just solution to Transylvania (independence? partition?), they awarded it wholesale to Rumania without any plebiscite in its large Hungarian cities. The video fails to inform that it was the incredibly ignorant and unjust Treaty of Versailles and Treaty of Trianon that made the bed to the rise of the monster Hitler - sealing the fact of Allied responsibility for another, even more catastrophic Second World War (at the end of which they still failed to address the injustices committed after the First one). It is for this reason that a prominent Turkish politician famously remarked once to his European counterparts: "you Europeans still keep talking about WWII, although that war had ended. What did not end is the First World War" - and it is for these reasons alone that the E.U., so promising at its start, has yet to deliver and stand up for significant cultural and ethnic minorities within Europe. This must be done not in terms of nationalism, but in terms of defusing nationalism to rise, at the source. More harmony would result and a far better, more balanced E.U. would be gained at the end.

Every nation emphasis their role in history. Probably an independent state was better suited for Transylvania. Only briefly Hungary considered Transylvania as part of the mother country. Most of the team it was a separate vasal principat. Like a colony. Anyway here is the wiki link en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transylvania

An excellent presentation. Thanks. Easy to follow. Educative. Simplified maps that are just right and well paced and clear diction. The editors have restrained themselves and reduced the background moosick to just acceptable.

Many people outside Germany: Yes. Germany clearly caused the First World War. That a group supported by Serbia killed parts of the royal family of Austria-Hungary, and Austria-Hungary then attacked Serbia, has nothing to do with the First World War. And the fact that Germany was dragged into the war as an ally of Austria-Hungary, was attacked first by Russia and then only defended itself, is also completely irrelevant. Germany is to blame for the First World War. That's why the war winners had to take away 1/3 of Germany's land, occupy their most important economic center and send a bill of any amount in billions every year, which Germany has to pay, although the Treaty of Versailles didn't specify any amount about the reparation payments. No idea why Germans started hating their neighboring states and minorities so much that they elected a man who brought them a better economic situation and who started a new war 30 years after the end of the war against the war winners of WWI. Germany evil. And only through the Americans, Germany learned democracy. America! Fuck Yeah! Land of the Free!

Fun fact: In Germany, Austria and other countries, there were so-called "war nailings" from 1915 to finance the war. In this process, a nail was hammered into a wooden object for a sum of money. In the end, these objects, which were full of nails, resulted in monuments.

The Italian borders after the war are not exact. Italy only obtained Trentino and Alto Adige (removed from the Austro-Hungarian Empire). The other territories In the north of the Adriatic Sea, he obtained them in 1920 with the Treaty of Rapallo, which was signed with the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

Yeah, which is why Benito Mussolini became so popular, because he told that italy didn't get enough territory when ww1 ended.

Germany:does not want to fight on 2 fronts 2 days later: declares war on belgium creating 3rd front
@yuhi66494 жыл бұрын
That is not called a new front. Otherwise it wouldn't be Eastern Front and Western Front, but a Belgian Front, French Front, Russian Front, etc And obviously no-one says it that way, instead prefers to consider fronts on east, west, and if fighting on a colony, African Front, Pacific Front, etc.
@leonpaelinck3 жыл бұрын
that's just an extension of the French-German front. Also at that point there wasn't an eastern front yet (or a t least not very active)

A few things to note: 1. If History Matters is accurate, the Schillfen Plan was initially reversed at the start, this meant Germany was going to initially focus on Russia before going after France. So why the total 180 where Germany focused on France before going after Russia? The Russo/Japanese War of 1904-1905 which saw the Russian military get completely humiliated by Japan,after this Germany no longer saw Russia as an immediate concern/threat. 2. Why was Italy initially neutral? As the Triple Alliance treaty was a defensive pact and Austria threw the 1st punch by declaring war on Serbia, Italy wasn't obligated under treaty obligations to help Austria. In fact, Austria's 1908 annexation of Bosnia nearly caused Italy to leave the Triple Alliance. 3. Why did Germany help Austria even though Austria technically threw the 1st punch? Because Germany was of the thinking that if their Austro-Hungarian allies were left to their own devices that Austria-Hungary would lose the war by 1917 at the latest. 3. The reason why the other powers of Europe objected to the Treaty Of San Stefano was the Bulgaria that was proposed. This Bulgaria would've been a Russian puppet that would've given Russia access to the Mediterranean Sea. For the other powers of Europe, it was a step too far: 1.The UK and France objected as Russia with access to the Mediterranean Sea would potentially make Russia a threat to the African colonies of the UK and France and possibly the Suez Canal. 2. Austria-Hungary objected because they felt the Treaty Of San Stefano gave Russia too much influence in the Balkans.
