It sounds like you haven't been paying attention to this video. There was no Romania to "still exist" before the 19th century. Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldova were all regional parts of different kingdoms or autonomous principalities throughout history.
@sticlavoda56323 жыл бұрын
@@cosmopolitanbay9508 Romania united in 1859 trough a personal de jure union as an ottoman vassal, under the name of "The United Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia" . It previously united in the year 1600 as well under Michael The Brave , but that union fell apart shortly after his assasination, serving as the groundwork for an united Romania. As Romania is a continuation of the previously medieval states founded in the 14th century , it carries most of its burdens. I would say that if other united states under the title of one sovereign country share the burdens of each distinct state which make up said country, then a now fully unified Romania would also posses those same problems.

Welsh (adj.) Old English Wielisc, Wylisc (West Saxon), Welisc, Wælisc (Anglian and Kentish) "foreign; British (not Anglo-Saxon), Welsh; not free, servile," from Wealh, Walh "Celt, Briton, Welshman, non-Germanic foreigner;" in Tolkien's definition, "common Gmc. name for a man of what we should call Celtic speech," but also applied in Germanic languages to speakers of Latin, hence Old High German Walh, Walah "Celt, Roman, Gaulish," and Old Norse Val-land "France," Valir "Gauls, non-Germanic inhabitants of France" (Danish vælsk "Italian, French, southern"); from Proto-Germanic *Walkhiskaz, from a Celtic tribal name represented by Latin Volcæ (Caesar) "ancient Celtic tribe in southern Gaul." As a noun, "the Britons," also "the Welsh language," both from Old English. The word survives in Wales, Cornwall, Walloon, walnut, and in surnames Walsh and Wallace. Borrowed in Old Church Slavonic as vlachu, and applied to the Rumanians, hence Wallachia. Among the English, Welsh was used disparagingly of inferior or substitute things (such as Welsh cricket "louse" (1590s); Welsh comb "thumb and four fingers" (1796), and compare welch (v.)). Welsh rabbit is from 1725, also perverted by folk-etymology as Welsh rarebit (1785).

It was în 1922, shortly after the last echoes of WW I have faded and peace was restoring in Europe. The british embassador to Bucharest was requested by His Majesty's Foreign Office to draw a report about Romania, as the country has more than doubled its size and population, following the unification with the Romanian speaking provinces from the Austrian and Russian empires. This gentleman takes his car and drives for almost two months around the country observing, inquiring, taking notes. His report is a great work of economic, military and geopolitical analisys. The most striking, however, is the conclusion: "...so, in spite of the corruption, Romania is such a disgustingly rich country that it will take the most inept politician 50 years to ruin it."

Well the only empire that could have easily annexed us was the Ottoman Empire and they never really annexed us because it was more profitable for them to keep us as a puppet state (paying tribute) than wasting their money governing directly over us in case of full annexation. They fully Annexed Greece, Bulgaria and other balkan states, but now they're all free anyway.

@@mihaidiaconescu7060 exactly. It was more profitable for them to keep us puppet.
@mirceamaier65463 жыл бұрын
It was not just keeping us as a puppet. The Principalities of Moldavia and Walachia were the main contributors to the wealth of the Ottomans in this region. They provided most of the goods needed to support the Ottoman army ( such as cattle, recruits for their army) and not only. They needed to keep the people from the Principalities satisified. That is one of the reasons they didn't try to convert them to islam, for example. They needed stability in this important region ( a crossroads for the commerce between Asia and Europe). Even later, when they were fed up with the Romanian kings/princes that rebelled against, the thrones of the two Principalities were given/sold to Greek Orhtodox rulers selected from the Greek neighbourhood of Fanar (Istanbul), in order not to aggravate the population.

Jakraful yes, it is a long term plan, at least in the way that our country’s investments in the Moldavian country are indicating that. Investments like easy access for moldavians in the EU space, citizenship, access to Romanian universities, cultural, etc. Some politicians even mentioned a month ago that a ministry for Moldova should be created in our government. Edit: Romanians as a whole, are somewhat ready mentally for an unification, if the moldavians want this as well, of course, and we will manage the ethnic minorities (Ukrainians, Russians, mixed moldavians) in a fair way, as our German and Hungarian minorities can attest, despite some right winged posts that you may find.

@vasilevictordurlesteanu24355 жыл бұрын
@@Jakraful It was, in 1991. Nowadays, it is debatable. Yet, there are unionistic parties in Moldova, as well as strong financing from Romania that feeds these movements. Also, Romanian investors are very active in Moldova, since the market exhibits similar customer behavior (as we share the same traditions, history, and language), on the other hand, there are bold specifics in the Moldovan market, inherited from USSR mindset. Still, there is a strong bond among both countries (RO and MD), however, a few can answer the question with proper analysis and many can reply in a yes or no manner. Moldova is located on the crossroads and has a very heavy Transnistrian burden (which is characteristic to many post-soviet countries such as Georgia, and other countries that were involved in frozen conflicts with Russian Federation in Central Asia, North & South Caucasus). Will Moldova be better off being a part of Romania? Probably, as both states can be united within the European Union, thus, Moldova can benefit from the monetary injections into its economy. Currently, Moldovans travel visa-free in EU and Moldova has signed a Deep Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with EU member states. Yet, European integration is a longstanding process and the main question is: Will Moldova reform enough to meet the requirements of becoming an EU member state? And at the point its economy will achieve the corresponding entry-level to EU, will Moldova be better of by giving up its agreements and memberships with other countries in favor of EU membership. All in all, yesterday MD entered into a deep political crisis and there is a high risk of entering into chaos. Despite the fact that the new government has been elected two hours ago. Will Romania be better off for being consolidated with Moldova? Absolutely not. The cost will be too high, as the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. It will have to digest Moldovan problems for decades, as does the German Federation digest the merger with Eastern-Germany, by means of Solidaritätszuschlag (Solidarity Surcharge) in order to rebuild the east German infrastructure. German reunification has cost 2 trillion euros for the past 20 years. Additionally, the consolidation can levy a burden on the aspects mentioned by Shirvan in the video, such as Maintenance of Unity within Romania and the stalemate with the Russian Federation. Considering the fact that Romania has a high growing GDP at 4.1 in 2018, being the 7th among other EU member states, simultaneously the country comprises all the variables to become a leading nation in the eastern part of Europe, there are fewer incentives to unify with the Republic of Moldova, and more incentives to grow a puppet state. Meanwhile, Moldova has the potential to become the Switzerland of Eastern Europe. It is Member of the World Trade Organization, it has a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, Turkey, it is a part of FREE TRADE AREA of the Community of Independent States (CIS) (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan), Member of GUAM (Georgia Ukraine Azerbaijan Moldova) cooperation, Member of Central European FREE TRADE AGREEMENT (Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia), and holds 4th Round talks of FREE TRADE negotiations with People’s Republic of China. Also, Moldova is situated between EU and CIS states, as a result, lies on the border of two gauge railway systems, the "standard gauge" (present in Europe) and the redefined 5 ft gauge (on the post-soviet territory), known as "broad gauge", thus it has the premises of developing as a logistic hub on the transition of traded goods between Asia and Europe. Additionally, Moldovans are multilingual, as most of the population speaks Romanian (the official language, with a Moldovan dialect) and Russian. Thus, it is easy to learn and understand the roman group of languages (such as Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese) and the Slavic group of languages. This is also an issue of why there is a mass labor migration to the EU and Russia. Also, the young generation is keen on entering the IT and ICT industries, as the salaries are higher, and many firms with foreign capital enter the market and source for cheap yet smart tech brains (this phenomenon is similar to the Indian IT market, just for comparison). I hope this comment will give a better understanding

Won't make any sense given the demographics. Moldavian citizens can easily get into Romania and then do whatever they want with minimum effort. Borders should not be moved, just have them open.

Thanks for this great overview of Romania! I have never thought about how hard it might be to hold together a country which contains 3 regions with so distinct historical-cultural backgrounds: the historically Russia-influenced Moldova (with earlier Tartar and Mongol invasions), the Ottoman ruled Wallachia (with some Bulgarian and Byzantine history) and Transylvania which was part of Hungary for a millennia. These might have resulted in 3 vastly different mindsets - one with eastern roots, one with the Balkans way of thinking and a western one as well. Keeping these together is not the easiest job to find out there... :) Well keep on fighting the corruption Romanian brothers, you deserve better!

Keeping the country together is not an issue these days. There are very few people here wishing to separate the country. The biggest problem we have here is the institutional legacy of the Otoman Empire and Comunist party. Any of those mindsets would be bad by itself, but the combination of the two is devastating to the rule of law, but hopefully with continued openness to the western values we'll be able to develop a more democratic mindset and more development focused institutions.

dravecza I want to point out a few things tho: -The only obvious difference would be between the historical Transylvania region that’s showed in the video and the rest of Romania. -There are more regions in Romania. For instance, Dobrogea (the coastal region of Romania) has never been part of Wallachia (Muntenia nowadays).

Transylvania was administratively part of hungary from the mid 1600 until 1918 so hardly 1000 years. I don't know how people get this "millenia" domination of the Hungarian kingdom. For what is worth many of the important rulers of the mid state Hungarian kingdom come from Romanian descendants

Imagine entering the great war with over 400 000 soldiers and lose more than 80% of them for the complete unification of Romania. And after almost 100 years everyone can see the most stupid and corrupted people leading this beautiful country our great grand parents have died for.
@Kalimdor199Menegroth4 жыл бұрын
Problem is that the generation who forged the union died off in gulags and prison camps. The one that rules us now is the one that resulted from the communist takeover, which reinvented itself in the democratic framework, without giving up power.
