Disagree with your assessment of the Philippines. The political elite don't care about political unity, but rather, self-enrichment. Everything else is just a diversion. Look at the current push for greater regional power through a federalist system. Every province is run by a clan, or extended family. Manila is just a collection of powerful clans working together, an oligarchy rather than a democracy. I'm not sure if you can blame it's problems on colonialism, as other regional countries like Japan were also colonized, and seem to be doing fine. The 900lb elephant in the room is corruption. Filipinos are highly adaptable and successful given the right environment. Filipino Americans have the 5th highest household income as an ethnic group-- higher than British, Israeli, Swiss, Norwegian, and Japanese Americans. The enormous overseas foreign worker community sends back billions of dollars in remittances every year, and provides an economic lifeline for a country that's otherwise struggling to stay afloat. In their home country, little opportunities exist because the economy is monopolized and controlled by a small group of oligarch clans. Over 70% of all economic gains in the country go to a group of 40 families. Progress is elusive, as the funds for every project must pass through endless hands, and approval gained from a multitude of bureaucracies before anything is started. The country has enormous potential. As I've said above, Filipinos are successful when given the right environment. It also has a great deal of natural resources, a young and largely English-speaking population, beautiful tourist destinations, access to an enormous coastline, a temperate climate, and is positioned as a gateway between East and West. But before major progress can arrive, the old system of oligarch monopolization and corruption must disappear.

Malaysian here. Some clarification may be in order: 1) When Shirvan mentions 'frictions between territories', it's a little more complicated than that, because it's more political friction than ideological or cultural frictions of say, Indonesia. Much of the West Coast Peninsula supports 'pro-liberal' parties, whereas our East Coast brothers may be more supportive of 'pro-Islamic' parties. Sabah and Sarawak on the other hand, have independent political parties that ally themselves with the ones in the Peninsula heartland, and so allegiances change according to political needs. 2) China's involvement is designed indeed to suit their needs, but it's hardly a divide and conquer strategy. AFAIK, a proposed trainline that runs across both shorelines of the Peninsula aim to shorten the freight times from East Coast Peninsula (nearer to Beijing) to the West Coast (closer to Europe) and has the express objective of circumventing Singapore's part in the ASEAN maritime trade routes, while another trainline runs down the Peninsula spine, and aims primarily to ship goods to and fro the industrialised West Coast. 3) Malaysia just underwent an election a few months ago that ended up with a total upset for the past government: the Opposition Party winning for the first time, effectively ending the 100 rule of the incumbent party. One of the first things our new PM (which is a returning PM, and one that was in initial incumbent party - stuff is complicated this side of the world) is to go tell China to go screw themselves lol: www.apnews.com/27dd8af785214660b29cbb917161b47e/AP-Interview:-Malaysia's-Mahathir-aims-to-scrap-China-deals So in conclusion, the situation here is developing. Like many things, it is layered, and would require an in-depth look to properly dig out the details. So take whatever is said here with a grain of salt, our country isn't too bad, and if you want a closer look at Malaysia, support CaspianReport on Patreon lol

What made all (or most) ethnicity in Indonesia to be unified were the presence of common enemies, not the 'unity in diversity' thing. It wasn't Majapahit or Sriwijaya that unified all modern-day Indonesia. It was the Dutch.

Good video. One thing I might add is that Indonesia'geography makes it very difficult for mobility and logistics, prices in Papua can be twice more than Java because of this and it's probably why most of the population is on Java. Unlike say the United States where people and goods may move between states through simple roads and rails, Indonesia relies on planes and ships. This makes personal mobility very limited, I bet most Indonesians have never been to more than 2 major islands. This means that other islands besides Java have a hard time developing on the pace of Java and Java itself is overpopulated because unless it's a government program, it's extremely unlikely for a Javanese person to permanently move to another island. In my opinion, statistics on the Indonesian economy are deceiving, as much of its wealth is in Java alone. It's interesting that China is not capitalizing on this by offering much improved and, more importantly, cheaper air and sea travel infrastructure. I'm pretty sure Jakarta would more likely bite.

From all three I think Philipines fare well, It only needs an equal development and they are set to go. Indonesia and Malaysia both has fears that if their far away territories are equally developed it will be harder for the central to control them, especially when the former has nearly the same wealth.
@kuyaleinad41956 жыл бұрын
All in all, it really depends on how the colonial powers treated their colonies. The British seem to have taken large amounts of Chinese and Indians to Malaysia fairly recently and so those people kept their culture whilst on Malaysia. The Dutch only loosely controlled the whole of Indonesia and for a smaller amount of time. From what I know, the Dutch was only heavily involved in Batavia (Jakarta). They tend to just trade with local rulers in other parts of Indonesia. The Spanish held the Philippines for a long time and projected power both from Cebu and Manila so the Territory as a whole was controlled better (Mindanao was the only controlled relatively recently hence the separatists there). There also wasn’t any mass migrations of other people like what happened to Malaysia under the British.

Excellent video, as always. I was surprised, however, to hear that East Timor's independent territory was portrayed as a part of Indonesia that seceded, when the reality is that it was invaded (violently) days after earning its independence from Portugal and it took a large toll on the population and international effort to recover its independence. This is an important distinction as in this case it is not a case of internal dissent of yet another part of Indonesia, but of resistance to a recent invasion.
@alexanderchristopher62376 жыл бұрын
Technically, we let East Timor go. President Suharto annexed the nation, but he got removed in 1998. By the next year, we gave them referendum to secede by President Habibie. Legally, Indonesia is to inherit all former territories of the Dutch East Indies. That is why we had operation Trikora to annex West Papua. East Timor is Portugese, but we invade because Suharto (a pro-West) doesn't want communism in East Timor. BTW, USA consented to the invasion.

I would suggest reading "The New Global Politics of the Asia Pacific" by Michael K. These are books I have to refer to everyday in my "Power in Asia"-focused university subjects. I would say that PNG and East Timor will be hard to cover in that one; East Timor is being pressured by both Australia and Indonesia (mainly for their natural resources reserves in the Timor sea) and that PNG is hopeless to do anything because Indonesia won't budge on West Papua because there's considerable natural resources reserves (and it was annexed by Sukarno in 1962 following the "Agreement signed by the Netherlands and Indonesia regarding the administration of the territory of West New Guinea").

Indonesia has proven its strength and endurance fighting the Allies in 1945, soon after USA defeated Japan. USA, UK, AUST and Dutch attacked Surabaya Indonesia, Indonesian people swarmed the allies and fought back using sharpen bamboos, the allies had to back off overwhelmed in a bloody war, Indonesia defended its territory successfully. But, it's always Indonesia that's seen as the evil invader and Australia seen as the glorious liberator...

Philippines will no longer have the difficulty of governing the whole country by decentralisation of government, thus every Filipinos from Luzon to Mindanao can develop economically without relying to Manila. That being the major cause of overcrowding in Manila because everything is centralised only in that metropolis.
@kuyaleinad41956 жыл бұрын
Hopefully that’s the case, I find that generally, the Philippines is already unified as a state judging from the fact that many overseas Filipinos are proud to be Filipino irrespective of which part of the island they’re from. The only problem seems to be western Mindanao around the Muslim Mindanao region. As for the other regions, Tensions seem to rise due to Manila’s overprojection of power. An example of this is the push for the ‘Filipino Language’ which is just Tagalog with a few differences. This infuriated the Visayans who see that any Filipino Language should be based on Visayan as it’s the most spoken language in the Philippines. Hopefully Duterte, as a former Mayor of Davao and a Visayan himself, change the current political landscape and set up a Parliamentary system or a decentralised federation. He should be aware that other regions of the Philippines want to be treated as equals to Manila instead of development primarily focused on the Tagalog Heartland.
@mamferry176 жыл бұрын
I fully agree on the utilization of Bisaya as another national language and lingua franca, but contrary to popular belief (and according to 2010 surveys) 26M speak Tagalog while 21M speak Bisaya, so it still makes sense to say Tagalog is the primary language of the country. It's more about "Bisaya should be sociopolitically treated equal to Tagalog." I also fully agree on the decentralization of the Philippine economy and stopping Manila from its overprojection of power over Visayas and Mindanao, but I am not sold on the idea that federalism would do better either. Assuming it will be the federal states of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, given the economic power of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao might become client states which would worsen the relations between the 3 regions.
@kuyaleinad41956 жыл бұрын
Flying Scout Yeah now Tagalog is the most spoken language but Bisayan was the most spoken back when the Filipino language was made into law. Also, the 2010 census is kinda misleading since Tagalog is most spoken now due to the law that made it the national language back in the 1950’s. So the census now includes me who speaks Tagalog as the primary language but would probably be speaking Ilocano if Tagalog wasn’t pushed as the primary language of communication. Oh well, past is past and I can see why the Government would want to make a national language as it’s important into making a nation state. As for Federalism, I’m not sure if it would work either as I’ve never lived under Federalism before. And you do have a point as Russia is a federal state but Moscow still exercise most of the power over the other places. But if it was to work, The states would probably be smaller. I think perhaps each region will become a state? Since Northern Luzon and Southern Luzon have completely different needs that it doesn’t really make sense to put them in one federal state.
@kuyaleinad41956 жыл бұрын
Roy Pinas You do have a point about the overseas people tend to be united. Perhaps I’m just not very aware of my own country but despite ethnic differences, the Philippines still don’t really have any other regions that want to become independent (excluding Western Mindanao). Even Mindanao island doesn’t really want to become independent. It’s mostly the Muslim areas of Mindanao where development has been stagnant and so they feel excluded from the primarily Catholic country. Other than that, we don’t really have a Scotland or Catalonia or Quebec that really want to and can become independent.
@mamferry176 жыл бұрын
Kuya Leinad that's a good idea. My concern then is what is the optimal size of a federal state for the Philippines? I think too big and it will be ineffective to address province-specific needs. Too small and the bureaucracy of running small (and numerous) states would slow things down. Regional identities would also be a factor. There's also the question of how much does each state get. Sercives are cheaper in bulk, which is why for better or for worse urban centers get a bigger chunk of the funding.

Currently, the South East Asia community in ASEAN plus China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand are finalising the former trans pacific treaty TPP now called Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in Singapore to improve on trade and expand the market, not relying solely on US as they have lots of shenanigans these days.

In terms of Malaysia, we do have seperatist elements - though largely contained in Sabah and Sarawak (Bornean Malaysia). Sentiments here ranges from regionalism to extremism, although the latter view is limited to small groups of people in the political fringes. Kuala Lumpur definitely managed to properly project authority onto its borderlands through political maneuverings and social engineering. One of the ways the capital is doing this is by strategically awarding pro-Kuala Lumpur politicians and bureaucrats to higher positions of power; same goes for pro-Kuala Lumpur big businesses. Although the recent election last May this year ousted the long rulling National Front, Malaysia is still at a crossroad - and with the growing friction between Beijing and Washington as well as the still heavilly disputed areas at the South China Sea - time will tell if Malaysia has domestic stability in the long term.

Fun fact: Indonesian nationalists declared independence against the Dutch as soon as Japan was hit with the atomic bomb on August 15th, 1945. They established the Federal Republic of Indonesia and began a four year long guerilla war against the Dutch, but what is remarkable is the speed at which the Dutch gave into the demands of the rebels, compared to other largely violent colonial wars in Africa and Asia at the time. This can be attributed to Soekarno gaining favour with the American government when his Republican forces crushed an insurgency led by a Communist and Islamist group of rebels. The American Secretary of State threatened to withdraw the planned Marshall Aid that was to be given to the Dutch in 1949 if they did not immediately make peace with Soekarno's Republican forces, so as to prevent a Communist insurgency from picking off a weakened Indonesian federal government. As an aside, given the severe lack of naval power on the part of Indonesia and other countries in the region, I think it may be feasible for ASEAN's long term security needs to form a Southeast Asian version of NATO where each country pitches in in proportion to their ability and budget to form a collective navy that can defend the Straits.

In the context of Malaysia, you are very true to the racial and religous sentiments . Especially of the Chinese, Indian and some Indegenous borneans loyalty towards the federal government, these minority had failed to integrate thus will be a big factor when in crisis occurs . Mostly on religious and western views of human right that contradicts Islam conservative nature. Non muslim in Malaysia would really loved to be aligned to the US or the west to break the dominance of conservative muslims in Malaysia. They are also plans to secede from Malaysia due to religious tensions or as the say the previous ruling federal government had broken the 'malaysian agreement' , mostly perpetrated by evangelist chinese and some indegenous borneans

There is nothing to look at Indonesia. Indonesia has nothing to offer to Malaysia. Referring to Ahok case. Singapore is #1 and Malaysia is #2 in the region. Why should they look at the those behind of them? Malaysia should look further if it ever wants to be prosper and stay ahead of those losers. Indonesia is not going anywhere, not until they learn tolerance, multiculturalism, and progressivism... traits that both SG and MY shared and cherished... and what makes it great.

Ying ~ The Ahok case was just one of the few political issues that tested Indonesia's commitment to multiculturalism and ethno-religious tolerance. Overall, Indonesians take great pride in their country's ethnic and religious diversity. All these ethnic and religious groups see themselves as Indonesian first, followed by their ethnicity, then their religion. So Indonesia definitely cherishes religious tolerance and multiculturalism, despite your claims to the contrary.

A quick search on the internet tells you that Indonesia burns down churches. Ain't no happening in MY and SG. So you guys should stop trying hard to lie to everyone.

@gruzit --- "What left to be proud with a country without the 'real' culture." Maybe bcoz you are too stupid to see the culture in MY, perhaps? And who do you think you are to tell to the Malaysians that they do not have culture? Black, Mexican, Irish, Spanish cultures and etc., are not a culture in USA??? Cool story. FUCK OFF RACIST. You all fascist assholes should be burned in hell. And thanks for proving my points. So glad that SG and MY are ahead of that primitive shithole Indonesia. #fascism #fascist #Indonesia

Ying ~ yes, churches have been destroyed in Indonesia at least once in the past, but don't assume that churches in Indonesia are burnt down on a daily basis. Plus, that church burning incident must have happened in the province of Aceh, whereas other provinces are okay with having churches there. There was one incident in the province of East Java, where a church was destroyed in a terror attack, but then again, don't assume this happens on a daily basis. Furthermore, don't assume that churches have never been burnt down in Malaysia. There have been several churches in Malaysia that were destroyed in early 2010 due to the controversy regarding the use of the word 'Allah' by non-Muslims.

What are you talking about? Singapore, despite its high percentage of Chinese, had always been pro western/USA. (Not stating if this is good or bad, this is just a fact) Just look at Lee Kuan Yew, who is English educated, come into power with support from western powers and suppress local Socialist/Communist elements. Singapore had hosted USA air and naval forces for a long time. Singapore armed forces train in Taiwan, Australia and USA. China's belt and road initiative specifically want to bypass Straits of Malacca, ie, Singapore.

Singkieland's stand is always being neutral and biased to whichever side that benefits it the most...
@chenqin4156 жыл бұрын
A more accurate description might be Sinkieland's stand is biased towards whoever is more powerful. For the past 50 years it had been western powers lead by USA. If China managed to displace USA in SEA, no doubt its stance will change, but not before.

I just don't see the Philippines really allying with the Chinese. The US and the Philippines has way too much history. And for them to just simply go right to China and become their underling. I just don't see that happening.
@blazingfire_07126 жыл бұрын
TheWinged Hussar its pretty clear that China is becoming the new superpower, with its giant economy, and its just next door, it would be logical to be ally with China, but of course its just economically, with Filipinos having negative thoughts towards China with the “communist is bad” thinking (the propaganda of the US). Its good to maintain the alliance with the US because they are the “World Police” having the best military, but we can’t rely on them much with the distance of a thousand kilometers from each other.

The recent reduction of Manila's reliance from Washington comes from the fact that Washington never did anything to protect the islands being contested in the South China Sea.
