True story: One of my husband's customers when he was a wholesale florist in the San Francisco area in the 1980's was a concert promoter. You might be surprised to know literally ALL artists want some kind of flowers in their dressing room. My husband would supply them and we were usually offered very good tickets to see the show. I saw George Benson in the Bay Area in 1983. I was very pregnant at the time. The stage was circular and moved around during the performance. The band was 21 pieces!! Lots of percussionists. It was incredible!! We were in the 2nd row and he made a lot of eye contact with the audience. Even if you didn't care for that kind of music, you'd have been floored by talent of each of the musicians he had with him. Great experience I haven't forgotten. I think he wanted a particular kind of orchids in his dressing room, but it's been so many years.

Well, sometimes when parents try to "force feed" music on their kids, the kids resist, just instinctively. But I think that music that you hear your folks playing when you're growing up, ends up getting into your system whether you are aware of it or not. I know that's what happened to me. There's music my parents listened to that I didn't care for as a kid, because it was "old people music", haha -- but that now, I happen to really dig.

True just from being around it I get nostalgic for my mom's music
@oldarpanet3 жыл бұрын
As a toddler, I didn't resist. I got to hear such pieces as The Grand Canyon Suite, William Tell Overture and such. Great pieces of music. Mom's/Dad's music isn't bad because it's mom's or dad's. My daughter nagged me into taking her to a used-clothing store because she wanted to see what she could get.....on the way we were driving, the radio was on (think 1997-ish, she was mid teens) On the radio came a song: Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, performing Piece of My Heart. I dug it because I was 11 or 12 when I first heard it and it was revolutionary! Now, I and my daughter of 14 or 15 was riding in the car with me, this song was on the radio and (as sometimes happens) we were both singing along with the radio, completely unaware the the other was even aware that the song existed! I, without an intention to do so, inculcated in my child an appreciation for Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, the Grateful Dead, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and more. If that is "parents try to "force feed' music on there kids" then I am Proudly guilty!

a bit of George's history: his original "claim to fame" was primarily as an instrumental jazz guitarist in the 1960s, very well-known and respected. He rarely did vocals until the mid 1970s, when his "Breezin'" album was a huge breakthrough -- and I recall Guitar Player magazine featuring him (again) at the time, pretty much in awe of the fact this great guitarist they'd known and featured for years had some serious vocal talent as well. His famous recording of the Drifters' song "On Broadway" was on a live album from 1978, and became a huge hit, a Grammy winner, and pretty much a signature song for him.

George is one of the most amazing guitar men ever. I have been playing for over 50 years, and I still can't make sense of what I see him doing and what I'm hearing. His fingers are unlike anyone else alive or dead. I saw him in the summer of 1976, when the Breezin' album came out. Michael Franks was the warm up act, and he was jazzed like crazy because he had forgotten his guitar strap in LA, and George had lent him his. It's the one in the pic on the back of the Breezin' album. He thought is was SO cool. And it was. Then George came out and his bass player came out, dropped a tambourine on the floor, stepped into it, plugged his bass in, and played both all night long. George blew me away like nobody's business. I had to go home and digest what I had seen and heard, so I didn't even take the guitar out of the case for 3 days. There was no point. This man is an absolute master of the 6 string instrument. Funny thing is, though, I have a DVD of a private lesson with GB, and he clearly KNOWS what he's doing, but explaining it to you? That's a different story. One AMAZING player, and a sweet guy, from what I've heard and can tell.

I was 4 going on 5 in 1955/1956 with three older brothers and three older sisters. I remember the music they listened to like it was yesterday. I remember Mama listening to Mahalia Jackson's TV show and Tennessee Ernie Ford and Pat Boone's shows. Never liked Pat Boone much, but I'll never forget Elvis's debut on Ed Sullivan and one sister so excited by it. When the songs from that era play I can sing along almost word for word. By the time I was twenty/twenty-five, I couldn't tell you who sang the songs I liked to listen to. Life happened. I would never have remembered George Benson's name, though I loved his songs. And that goes for much of the music you react to.

The original by The Drifters was released in 1963. Benson's version was 1978. At first I believed Carol King wrote this, but is was in fact written by friends of hers during that time period. Yes, I did see "Beautiful" on stage in NY that included this song.

One of my favorite songs! Find his album "Weekend in LA", and enjoy! I still listen to it on vinyl. I was fortunate to see George live years ago. A true master.

George Benson is awesome jazz guitarist. Saw him in concert back in the late 70s. He's a great singer and musician. That Live Album On Broadway is incredible if you're a jazz fan.

On Piano was Jools Holland a member of Squeeze who are an English rock band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording in the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. In the UK, their singles "Cool for Cats", "Up the Junction" and "Labelled with Love" were top-ten chart hits.

As someone who grew-up with George Benson's original version of "On Broadway" - his all-time signature song - being the be-all, end-all version of it, at first I had kind-of hoped you would have done it instead of this one. However, this wonderful version that he did over 20 years later is also great in its own right. And it's great to hear how he evolved the tune over time. And man, he still brought it so big vocally in 1998. George Benson is such a Jazz legend and an amazing performer. All all-time star.

You said it best the other day. Something like; "I know these songs, but I don't know that I know these songs."

Saw him perform this live in Pittsburgh, where he is from, with an all star Jam that included Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, and a young Bobby McFerrin among others ( my memory fails me). When he came to the verse “cause I can play this here guitar” he held up his guitar and the place went crazy!

I am the younger of 7 brothers & sisters. In my case, my influencrs came of them. I meet George Benson' songs specifically from my older brother, who passed the hay one year ago because CoVid 19. Oh my God,... How I missed him. 😢

What's so awesome about this iconic tune, is the painful poetry of the lyrics as interpreted by the master of soul and heartfelt emotion, Mr. George Benson. If you cherish this song and still follow your dreams to New York City, you are going to succeed. A true thing of beauty. Thank you Jamel AKA Jamal for promoting this iconic song that reflects the hopeful yet tortured heart of our nation.

My parents did the same thing! They played older music, stuff before my time, when I was too little to even know a good song when it hit my ears; and now I love listening this genre. Thanks for reacting to this song!

LOVE U MAN! - George, when the hits came, was quickly appreciated for his guitar, but I was ALWAYS impressed at his singing! Some parents of color may have thought that some people 'sell out', but by the time George had hits, I hope folks simply appreciated him for what he does. Great musician! (when funk was overtaken by disco...)
