One of my favorite George Carlin bits in which he describes the sterilization of the American language. From the 1990 special Doin' it Again.

My father was deaf. I was told that I should not say he was deaf. I should say he had "hearing loss." Then I was told not to say "hearing loss," but to say "hearing impaired." Just recently, I came across the official City of New York guide to language. According to that guide, I'm now supposed to say my father was - - - deaf.

You know, I can sometimes see "hearing impaired" vs "deaf", depending on the situation. Just depends on how much hearing loss you have. It's possible for someone to have a significant amount of hearing loss but not be deaf and still be able to hear to some extent. But yeah, "deaf" going to "hearing impaired" doesn't take nuance like that into account.
@taylankammer

@@StormsparkPegasus True, though you could just say "partially deaf." Or for example "almost deaf" like my gramps. (If he's wearing his hearing aid and you talk loudly and clearly, he will understand half of what you're saying. :-)

Donald Trump would have a contract on him for the humiliation & ostracism George would be causing him. It would be comparable to an infant drowning from being force-fed the contents of a supertanker... It takes a fox to outfox a fox; no one puts down a New Yorker like another native New Yorker. And not just any New Yorker. George strikes me as guttural inner-city Bronx. Likewise it's gratifying just to see the cast of SNL cutting Trump down to size (More New Yorkers roasting one of their own) 😂😂😂 I can't help but realize the relief George W. Bush & Dick Cheney must've experienced when Robin Williams died... In the name of corruption, criminalized but legalized & normalized capitalism- - now the truest of American traditions- - the media has completely sold out to our lovely political system. Now that Ted Koppel, Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley, Dan Rather, & numerous other unsung heroes are gone, investigative journalism, as the ultimate policeman of the government & the public's last line of defense, no longer exists. So now the entire political community & their true rich & powerful masters have exactly what they wanted all along: to do whatever they want whenever they want, no matter how felonious or murderous, & with no fear of punishment whatsoever. Not from the police, nor from the courts, nor from prison. Not even the certainty of public exposure! Now that the Press have abandoned the job, now we don't even have one maverick comedian left to hasten a political attack & open people's eyes to the truth when it is needed the most... And that is the final blow for me. I love my country: the lands, the wilderness, mountain country, & esp our people. But I'm finally leaving, before things really break apart at the seams, 'cause I don't see anyone or anything that's going to protects us- - the common people- - from the heartless tyrannical rich & powerful 1% anymore. There's nothing left in the law to stop them; no one left in law enforcement to stop them; nor are there enough lawyers that will stop them As far as I'm concerned, all that's left now is for civil war to take place. So now it's only a matter of time before the war that has been raging all along in the ghettos of East LA, of Chicago, & of New York city is going to engulf our entire nation. A war that's been raging btw impoverished blacks & racist police; a war that's been raging btw the rich & powerful & all of America's poor, regardless of color. The only safe place left for me is the Arctic Circle 😪😪

Carlin is very hit or miss. He was polished but not. Mainly because he didn't test his material but spent months writing it. As for comedy there are many types. parody, satire, truths that sound like lies and lies that sound like the truth. Dark humor, stereotype humor. Mainly humor is bringing people along a story and flipping the ending in an unexpected journey. Or you can get comedy that is like andrew dice clay where it is expected and the journey is the joke. One thing to look for is if you only hear clapping and little to no laughter from the croud. That is something you hear at a ted talk on roadways. You acknowledge the work was good and you enjoyed yourself but only a few people found the jokes funny.

Carlin's point still stands, but the term "shell-shock" was associated with cowardice, i.e. soldiers who were shell shocked were considered cowardly and not as good, because there was no medical recognition of the term. That's why it was changed with time. But yes carlin's point still stands

Probably just as hard as the steel balls coming from the shrapnel/artillery shell. "Shell shock" has been referred to body damage caused by an explosion.

Every white person should spend some time researching the subtle evolution of the word Nation's definition over the last 100 years. It wasn't that long ago that being American, English, French or German meant you were white by definition. Funny how as we're stripped of the language to define ourselves as groups we are also stripped of our land and property. That's probably just a coincidence though.
@falonsfox2585
@falonsfox2585 4 жыл бұрын
@Tony Wilson Sorry for the TLDR, but I don't have to work today, and I think you probably interpreted my dog whistle correctly the first time and then generously chose not to leap to that conclusion. I am an unapologetic ethno nationalist, which is a phrase that had to be invented because words like patriot and nationalist have been corrupted (in my opinion deliberately). It's not that we're passively losing our identity. It's that we are being actively stripped of it. To be clear, I'm no fan of Trump, but during Trump's campaign Paul Ryan said Trump was a racist for claiming the Trump University lawsuit should not be presided over by a "Mexican" judge. Ryan said "to claim that someone can't do their job because of their race is pretty much the definition of racism". The media was quick to point out that the judge was born in Indiana. I used to be a liberal. One of the reasons I'm not anymore was watching liberals across the country pretend they didn't understand that Trump was very obviously saying the judge would be biased against him because of his campaign promises about cracking down on immigration and his claims that illegal immigrants from Mexico were rapists and criminals. When Trump called the systematic violation of our national sovereignty across the southern border a national emergency, the Mexican attorney general of California went on PBS to spew a bunch of nonsense about how it's somehow illegal for the federal government to enforce it's border laws. The importation of third world labor keeps wages down for working class Americans. Blacks are tricked into voting for it by being told immigration restriction from third world countries is racist. Whites are told opposing these policies is racist too, but since that doesn't always work, they're also told they're lazy, incompetent or entitled for not wanting to compete with desperate, starving denizens of the third world for jobs. Or they're forced to listen to some bullshit about free markets. I can't help but notice that wall street and the rest of the donor class would have benefited from either Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush. Both were backed by the power structure of their respective parties, and both sought to court the growing Hispanic vote. I also can't help but notice that Bernie and Trump both wanted to put America's working class above immigrants and both were subjected to horrific attacks from within their own parties.
