I think the coolest thing about this is that George genuinely believes in what they're doing and sees the potential in them and he probably wasn't surprised when they finally made it.

He was surprised that Hillel was the only one who died. He said that band had a cloud of death over them when he worked with them. He told them death was soon to be upon them.

Awesome! Pro tip: "One Hot Minute" is their best album. They never got to such beautiful lyrical depths, the recording of the drums is just perfect, and the guitarist on the record, Dave Navarro, is a way more unique, interesting musician compared to Spoiled Brat Frusciante (everyone kisses his butt, and he's an egomaniac but he's not actually that amazing)... "One Hot Minute" is emotional, dark, intense, exciting, and full of top-notch musicianship. The guitar player in this video, Hillel Slovak, was really great and original (although he wasn't even on their first album - he had another band that got signed, so he ditched the Peppers, then his other band flopped, and the Peppers had some success, so he rejoined - really Machievellian... Later on, in 1988, John Frusciante murdered Slovak and made it look like a heroin overdose. The Peppers became megastars, but their music became extremely boring. Then Frusciante quit in the middle of a tour, screwing the entire band and crew out of a living... He came back in 1999, after doing tons of heroin and making very boring solo albums, then quit again, whining "I hate being famous", and then his ex-wife used to America courts to steal his money, so that's why he recently came back to the band (cash register) again.... It's all very sad, but the 80's music is thankfully still here for us to enjoy

Hillel is the original no one can touch him and his playing. John was good for a couple albums, Navarro was awesome OHM is their last good album. Since John came back their just boring, it all sounds the same. And fuck knows why everyone loves John, he's nothing compared to what he used to be. Before he split mid tour and his solo stuff is fuckin horrible.

Then were kept on the label for years despite being extreme addicts, with no hits, and the label had no idea how to market them. Still blows my mind how quickly they got a deal and how many chances they were given despite all accounts claiming the label hated them. It was going to cost too much money to refurbish it to use a recording studio again.

Nevermind was has been played three times since 1996 (twice in 2018, once in 2019). 1992 was the last time it was played with John and it was the only time with John and Chad since the Mother's Milk tour. The most it has been played in the last 32 years was with Dave Navarro.

Couldn't agree more. Rick Rubin (and Frusciante with his dad-rock sensibility) ruined the RHCP. Nothing was ever the same after that embarrassingly schmaltzy ballad, Under the Bridge. (It's a pity they couldn't have kept Navarro -- One Hot Minute is flawed but it's lightyears more interesting than anything that ever came after it.)

@@joealexandra7185 You sir, are an island of sanity in these times which we find ourselves. ...plus, all this talk of them "evolving"...I appreciate a band with integrity. One of the reasons I loved those guys was their original style and fury. I guess pop is eternal and funk is just a gimmick or dead trend to some. They have become everything they used to be the antidote for to me.

@@briana3186 It's such a strange trajectory -- once the most exciting, they're now the most boring. I was such a fanatic that between the years 1984-1988, I saw the RHCP fifteen times in and around Los Angeles, the first time with the underappreciated Jack Sherman, the last time at the debut show of Frusciante, and all the times between with the late, great, sorely missed Hillel Slovak (but at one of these, in the City of Irvine, Anthony was actually a no-show, so I'm not sure if it really counts, though it was definitely memorable, with Flea inviting random audience members to serve as guest vocalists -- if nothing else, it made you realize how important and irreplaceable Anthony was to the group). On a side-note, my all-time favorite Chili Peppers song hasn't changed since 1984 -- it's the first one they ever wrote and performed, Out In LA. Back in the day they opened every live show with this blistering rav-up -- and it was so exciting that it would send shivers down my spine.

@@joealexandra7185 Damn man, that's so awesome. Wish I could have seen any of that. RHCP and Jane's Addiction were my bands back in the day. I think Mother's Milk was out when I found them, so I got in at the beginning of the end. I was into BSSM when it came out, but it's pretty dated now. But from Mother's Milk, I just went backwards to all their previous records. That's the Chili' Peppers I know and love. And yes, Hillel was the man. Funny thing is, all these years I didn't know anything about Jack Sherman until recently, but it seems he was behind some of their stuff I love the most now. Man, I've never seen them live, wouldn't care to now, but I can only imagine what it was like to see them back then. Yeah, about Anthony...a lot of people bust on him because he "can't sing" (personally I wish he would stop trying and go back to what he does best) but who else in the world could front that band? No one. It's like Sabbath without Ozzy. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Man, I don't need to tell you any of this...preachin' to the choir. Those are some amazing experiences you've had! So glad I'm not the only one who at least realizes we are indeed deep inside of a parallel universe.

This was easily the best RHCP album period! This was produced by the funkiest man alive, next to James Brown. This was when the CHILI PEPPERS were young and hungry! This album is full of funky tracks that were backed by the legendary P-FUNK MOB. This entire unit was on top of their game. Anthony Kiedes was a rapper back then, that picked up his skills at the underground rap clubs in LA. FLEA was chaotic, stanky, spastic, ILLMATIC, and plain nasty! Hillel Slovak was the first and most quintessential guitar player for this band. His playing on this album was so rockin', liquid, fluid, and fuckin' FUNKY as hell. And Cliff Martinez, always kept the beats and grooves locked tight in the pocket. He was able to bring out that jungle element in the rhythms! The best thing about this band during this time was the fact that Anthony wasn't singing at all! Although he's an adequate vocalist, this band fairs much better when he's rapping! George Clinton is a true musical genius! And his production is what gave this band its legitimacy. FREAKY STYLEY is one of my all-time favorite albums. The partnership between Dr.Funkenstein and these crazed energetic, punk rock, drug-induced white dudes was infectious! My favorite track on this album is Yertle the Turtle. Check out Hillel Slovak's guitar grooves towards the end of this track! Too funkin' nastay! Today, although The RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS are highly seasoned and talented musicians, that have achieved international fame and untold riches, that they probably never would have imagined back in 1985. However, I think that their music has gone soft! They've become these lazy complacent rich white dudes, that's lost their edge in the studio. Their latest album is fuckin' wack! The Getaway album was a solid comeback, and that's because it was produced by that cat Danger Mouse. Their last good album prior was STADIUM ARCADIUM which came out in 2005, I believe. I think that The RHCP should collaborate with George Clinton again. George is still touring and putting out awesome albums today! I think that if they paired up again, the results would be funkin' magical! George has that dosage of pure funk that they need! Their collaborations with Rick Rubin have gotten played out and fuckin' tired!

I saw George in concert 5 years ago in his mid 70's. He came out center stage, got the band rocking on a groove, got the audience chanting along, fired up a spliff and 2000 people in the crowd followed suit lol. Then George and the band tore the roof off the sucka for 2 hours. Man is a fucking legend Also got stuck behind his tour bus when we were looking for parking on the way in. How'd I know? FL plates that read "WE FUNK"

@The Worldwide Rock N Roll English Teachers Network I respectfully disagree with you. But also in a big fuckin' way! The chemistry on that album (ONE HOT MINUTE) in my humble opinion was really OFF! The music and lyrics were gay! The shit was recorded in fuckin' Hawaii of all places! These CHILI PEPPERS dudes are supposed to be an LA band. You lose a lot whenever an LA band records a studio album in Hawaii. Also, these cats are supposed to be funky. So what was Dave Navarro doing in the band?! I heard, and watched him say that he couldn't care less about the funk! It was over for me at that point. And IF the CHILI PEPPERS are supposed to be a funky band, what could be better than having DR. FUNKENSTEIN produce your album?! Trust me, the pleasure was all theirs ( CHILI PEPPERS). That credit gave them their legitimacy as a fuckin' band period! And I will NEVER FORGET Anthony Kiedes and Dave Navarro French kissing on that WARPED video! Not only was that shit disgusting, it was also unfunky like a muthafucka! I read that Anthony really regretted doing that shit. He thought that they were over as a band because so many people were disgusted and disappointed with them. They've canceled Dave Navarro, and no longer speak to him. By the way, after John F left the band, a very good and personal friend of mine named Arik Marshall replaced him. That Brutha is so muthafuckin' funky on that guitar, that he makes me break out in a BLACK SWEAT! Dave Navarro ain't got shit on this cat!

@@zroy9263 Anthony never said he regretted that kiss. In fact, in his tell-all autobiography Scar Tissue, he says he didn't mind it, and when Warner Brothers tried to get the band to omit it from the video, they took a vote and unanimously decided the kiss should stay, as the band thought it was time to weed out the yokel (meaning the meatheads and the homophobes) from their audience anyway. And that was the greatest thing Dave Navarro could've ever done for that band imo. As it would suck to go to their shows today and still see a sea of bros and frat assholes and Nimrods on top of nimrods as far as the eye can see. That's not fun. Also, One Hot Minute is a great album. "Warped" for example, was some of the most mature lyrics/poetry Anthony had ever written up to that point. To dismiss lyrics like that as being gay is, well, yokel-ish. But don't get me wrong, I like the early work as well. Freaky Styley was also great. But I'm so glad that RHCP eventually tapped into their more feminine side and actually started writing songs and melodies, on top of the funk. And most of all I'm grateful you won't find any homophobes in their audience.

Do you know if they did any overdubs at all during these sessions or were they basically doing it live as a whole band? Interesting that Kiedis is jumping around and not worrying about mic technique at all and the bleed the vox mics would pick up.

@@sobtv9231 Wow thanks for answering so quickly! Yeah that is what my guess was as to get a good vocal I doubt he could be jumping around like that due to variations in volume and like I said the bleed from all the instruments would have caused issues through the vox.

@@addiepower the company I worked for back then used to bring us in there for MTV and we would never see the footage. This time my boss asked me to leave the tape in the machine so we can have a copy of the cool stuff. At the time RHCP were nobody but we all knew of George Clinton. The lip syncing was the only way to show the bands because otherwise they were separated by fake walls, a lot of cables and wearing those huge headsets.

@@sobtv9231 Yes they were a slow burn and in Australia they were unknown until at least Mother's Milk, only then a handful of people would have known them and obviously when Suck My Kiss and Give It Away were released, they exploded in Oz. I'm so surprised that MTV didn't give you copies of jobs that you filmed, for your records, but I suppose it was all a cost. Thanks again for the insight that's brilliant.
