You can talk about Hank, Willie, Dwight, Loretta, Johnny, Conway, Waylon, Reba, etc. etc. but NONE of them ever sang a song like George when he recorded this song! It's the epitome of country music and a goal for others to reach for, but I don't think they'll ever reach!

Time out man. I mean. George is a king of the genre. But cmon man, when Hank laid his soul bare for the world to see when singing Cold Cold Heart or Angel of Death that he wasnt better than every other man in the genre

@@josephb404 I like to think of George Jones as a world class singer. Same with Hank Williams Sr., Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Emmylou Harris. All world class - just different styles. That said, they all would mention George as the greatest pure singer. We're glad to be able to hear them sing.

According to the Ken Burns "Country Music" documentary on PBS, George Jones didn't want to record this song. He didn't like it, and he didn't think it would do well. But they kept pushing him to record it. When he finished, he said something like "okay, there's your damn song, and it won't sell a single record." It was his biggest hit of his career - - by far.

It is a shame that there are not many more occasions where George would make appearances on the late night talk shows (and even do a short interview), but I guess he was just a bit too modest for all that. I've always wondered if he ever made an appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson?
@whatsforafters784310 жыл бұрын
MSASteeler, It is a shame that Mr. Jones didn't appear much outside of the Nashville circuit on mainstream television.... I remember him appearing often on The Porter Wagoner Show, for example, when I was still a kid, but, after a quick look on the Internet, searching Johnny Carson, Jack Paar & Steve Allen, there seems to be no instance of George Jones appearing on those programs before. As my father has often remarked: "hillbilly" acts weren't given much attention in major metropolitan areas, like NYC, for example, back in the 50's and 60's, on mainstream television, let alone radio. We'll have to be grateful that we have so many great recordings to go back to, when it comes to a "one of a kind", like George Jones.... Thanks for stopping by!
