George Lucas is a talented story writer. But his directing skills are average. What made the original triology great was he had feedback from his editors. In the prequels people were scared to challenge Lucas as he was THE Star Wars creator. Lucas works well when working with people.

That was actually the perfect way to give out that bit of information. Because not only did that tell us where the lightsaber came from, it also showed that Vader suddenly realized the entirety of what this video discusses. He realizes Luke is powerful, and his equal, and is a true threat, and isn't just a kid carrying around his dad's old lightsaber. Luke has fully accepted the reality that Vader is his father, and yet Luke is going to follow his own path to the light side. Perhaps at that moment Vader believed Luke can actually destroy the emperor, and that is why he took him to the Emperor, believing that Luke could do what Vader could not, and he would finally be freed (dead or alive) from being a Sith.

I never had a problem with the way Anakin was portrayed. It always made me think of an emotionally stunted child soldier who grew up in war and born from slavery. I think in that context, his portrayal is perfect.
@yami-131
@yami-131 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call it perfect... but it is fitting. his story in addition to the conflict between him and the Jedi mindset, as he is devoted to more than just the Ideology of the Jedi with his love for Padme, which is Diametrically opposed to the Jedi's belief that he should sever his connections, puts him in a place where his fall is believable. I actually saw the series chronologically the first time which made me non-Biased against the Prequels and I was able to appreciate the journey that Anakin takes. I like the prequels and their Idea for what they wanted to do... and I can even believe Anakin's portrayal to an extent but it is not without problems... I suppose the part that brings me out of it somewhat is Padme's Acceptance of his character as is portrayed. actually the scenes when they are working together are rather well done but Parts of their more Romantic scenes and certain discussions that they have are less believable. the famous "I hate Sand" is actually a good example because in context it is a meaningful juxtaposition of how their lives were so different but Anakin then acts creepy... and what I'd love to see is other scenes that show that somehow, Anakin does change... (at least on the surface) not that Padme is Ok with Anakin being Creepy or that she accepts him slaughtering the Tuskens. we could have had her trying to acknowledge his suffering and helping him, but devoid of that Anakin's portrayal leaves me questioning the Other Characters in the PT. I would call that a reasonable portrayal but with a somewhat flawed execution. I still really like the PT overall though and I think had the movies been made chronologically it wouldn't have angered people as much.
@andrewsettle2323

I think the problem arises when you look at the reactions to such an emotionally stunted child soldier. A senator from a socially just world falls in love with him? He has creative banter in TCW with his Padawan? His master sees him as wise and potentially great? It can't all coexist when all we see, especially after Lucas cut some of the most beautiful dialogue for a vague imagery of whinny sand, is this little shit head. No disrespect to Hayden. Good man, Great performance.

I feel like the voice Hayden is doing isn’t necessarily monotone, it’s more cold with certain subtle fluctuations and verbal rolls that are very similar to James earl Jones. Which really makes it feel like that is for sure the guy in the suit. I also feel like it adds to the fact of how he’s transitioning into this man who’s lost everything and feels rage but also doesn’t wish to feel anything. He’s numb, he’s been brutally traumatized and he wants to FORGET his old life. He wants to make the galaxy believe that there is no Anakin Skywalker anymore. It also shows just how dark he’s become towards the events of revenge of the sith and I really honestly feel like these are subtle things in the way he portrays anakin/Vader that get so overlooked

You're doing the same "over-analyzation" that I did about 20 years ago. While I was 10 when the original movie came out, I too had a "rough childhood", and that gave me a lot of insight into Vader's character as it was revealed to us. I never "hated" the prequels... in fact, I saw through them in the way that many fans have come to do over time. But, given that I'm also an Aquarius, over-analyzation is a trait we tend to have. So, right place, right time, right astrological sign. I understand the story of Anakin Skywalker more than many people did originally, and while I think George Lucas himself may not have really understood the story, I think he was channeling the story the universe was telling him to give to us. Which is an amazing one.

Hayden's Anakin comes off as a very socially awkward type who has trouble regulating emotion. The monotone voice almost jives well with what you think of someone who has trouble connecting with others; however, by that same approach, when he did connect with someone, the connection was deep and intense, almost obsessive. From that regard, I use that as my headcannon for why the lines had some weird delivery. TCW Anakin was much more of the "popular Jock" type of personality, and it really was out of sync with Hayden's Anakin. I thought the animated Clone Wars did a better job with Anakin, but more Star Wars is always better.

Ehh, Hayden needed to enunciate more clearly. JEJ has the delivery of a classically trained thespian, and Hayden just sounded like a depressed surfer. Now this actually isn't to say that I think Hayden wasn't a good actor, or that he wasn't up to the task; I've always felt that it came down to 1, the terrible dialogue, and 2, poor directing, as he didn't need to sound more monotone, but he again really needed to enunciate.

You can really apply the three major timeframes of a man's life to Luke throughout the OT. In New Hope, Luke is innocent like a child and doesn't really understand what's going on in the Galaxy. In Empire, Luke is impulsive and rebellious like a teenager, refusing to listen to Ben and Yoda and trust the Force. In Jedi, Luke is a man. He is confident and sure of himself and has a purity in his purpose. He really does have an amazing character arc that I think is underappreciated.

He didn’t sever the relationship with his son, at that point there was no relationship except bitter rivals. What Vader did was destroy the bond that Luke felt for his father by first ridding him of his lightsaber and then by revealing his father’s true fate. Yet another reason why Rian Johnson throwing Luke’s saber over his shoulder is stupid.
@tyhar7493
@tyhar7493 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he severed the idea of Luke's father, the one the boy had growing up. It's truly the moment many boys have when the dream of their father is busted and the real man is revealed. The last Jedi was also a foolishly stupid reaction to seeing that Lightsabre again. Even if we accepted Luke as this broken and jaded cowardly old man, receiving his father's lightsabre again should of atleast reminded him of who he was back then, what he could be and how he rose and got stronger after losing that fight. Tossing it was an empty gag, poor writing in a poor film.

I think it fits. To Rey, who only knows the legend, she looks at it as the legendary lightsaber of the legendary Luke Skywalker. To Luke, though, it’s the lightsaber of Darth Vader, his father who fell to the dark side, and he lost it by getting his hand cut off on one of the worst days of his entire life. It’s a cursed object to him.
@WhatsThePointPicture
@WhatsThePointPicture 3 жыл бұрын
@@Highbrowser I think that justification only works if the charcters progression had ended after Empire Strikes Back. You have to disregard the developments of Return of the Jedi to think that Luke thought of his father in such a callous disregard at this point in his life. In Return of the Jedi, Luke makes it very clear that he knows that his father Anakin Skywalker is still in there and very much redeemable and at the end he DOES redeem him. To Luke this relic would have been symbolic of that relationship he had with his father and being rejoined with it might even represent that his relationship with his father whom he did come to care for had not been severed but repaired. What's more is that Johnson clearly didn't use that moment as any kind of commentary on Luke's relationship with his father but as a metaphor for Luke's rejection of the past and the Jedi as a whole. It was careless writing and an attempt at forcing the audience to move on from something they clearly wanted fleshed out.

I don't believe it's right to say "he doesn't really care anymore." Yeah, the whole thing is weird. He's talking like up to that point, Luke cared about Darth Vader and was trying to redeem him because he believed in his father. In A New Hope, Luke decides to join the fight against the Empire and “become a Jedi like my father.” With this insight, it’s chilling to see just how targeted Vader’s methods are in ESB. With the revelation that he is Luke’s father, fallen from the light, Vader strikes at the very thing that made Luke become a Jedi in the first place. In Vader’s mind, he was indeed destroying the father-son bond between Anakin and Luke. What nobody expected was that Luke‘s faith in his father would endure. Despite all Vader’s efforts, Anakin and Luke’s bond would not be broken.

Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life... He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself.' - Sheev Palpatine

Each battle had Vader conflicted which is why Luke won. In addition I believe Luke was a truly inspired Jedi because unlike what most people believe he was not going into that thrown room to beat his father in a light saber battle. He went in there unarmed to get in front of the Emperor and convert his father to the light side. To do that he had to throw down his weopon and truly leave his fate in the hands of his father.

That is interesting - never knew that part. That Luke literally was actually severing himself from his father when his hand was cut off. I knew he was tempting him and was superior in Empire Strikes Back, but with the extra training in Return of the Jedi the idea he was Vader's equal was kind of explained in the third film - that is not a surprise at least to me.

When did you watch these films? 🤔 I watched episodes 4-6, in the 80s. From my perspective, Luke was training a bit with Yoda, but left to help his friends. Got his hand cut off by Vader, (who was literally toying with him, one handed) and had to be rescued himself. The film then basically ended and it made no sense whatsoever. Then in the final film Luke went back to see Yoda, but Yoda inexplicably is either sick and dies... 😶 ...Or dies of old age, even though hardly any time seemed to have passed between episode 5 and 6. Luke then goes and fights Vader again, but this time Vader seems inexplicably weaker and Luke is far stronger??? It was never explained how he was suddenly a Jedi at the start of ROTJ. So I took it as, he'd got his arm cut off, but then returned as a Jedi in the final film. It wasn't until I watched 1-3, then later 1-6, back to back, that it made more sense that ROTJ was the return of Anakin to the light side. 🤔 Was there ever any meaningful explanation as to how Luke got powerful between episodes 5 and 6? I don't mean books and cartoons (🙄), I mean videos / dialogue by George Lucaa, like in this video?
@Buc_Stops_Here
@Buc_Stops_Here 2 жыл бұрын
@@1Flyingfist Not in this video, but I did see in another video with Lucas is that he wanted to portray Vader in his prime episodes three, four and five. By episode six enough time had passed that he was aged like Obi-Wan was in episode 4 when he died. As a result, he was "weaker" with the Force by that point while Luke was now in his prime by episode six. It also shows why the saber fights in episodes one, two and three were far more intense than they were in four, five and six. In those first three films, the Jedi were strong and the fighting was intense. By the next three episodes that were first released, the Jedi were all but extinct after what happens in Episode 3. When Lucas explained it, it really does make a lot of sense. I know a lot of people frown at his directing the first three episodes, but he did try to keep the continuity between all six (even though he did a lot of experimentation with technology with gave him bad reviews at the time, particularly around Episode 1 because of Jar-Jar Binks).

Vader never fought Luke with the intention to kill him, he couldn't. So i don't think Luke was more powerful than Vader, but Luke did had an advantage over him, he was Anakin's son, and he was the only person that could resurface him.

Ohh but to be honest. I love that whole Theory culture, one of the real upsides of the internet age! Just being able to connect with people, share the thoughts or even just watching videos, like yours to solidify a theory or two or just be blown away about things, that simply didn't occur to me. All those theory and lore channels out there, across the franchises I love just brought me to a deeper understanding and in turn, just makes it soo much more worthwhile for me. Especially, because it helps me recalling why things like Star Trek, Star Wars or Dragon Ball mean so much to me and how they impacted me in my personal beliefs and ideals! All those channels are basically a love letter to their respective source materials and it is really engaging!
