He was never obscure. One of the most prominent fantasy writers of our time long before the show. I still remember like yesterday when my friend gave me his SoIF copies to read back in 2007 because he thought that I had a huge hole in my fantasy fiction knowledge for not having read his books, and my girlfriend at the time had gone to a book convention to specifically get an autograph just from him a year before in 2006. His books were legend already way back before the show.

He really is. He’s a very open minded human being, sees all sides of faiths & religions, countries & continents, people & their way of life. He isn’t close minded or biased or shut off in anyway. It’s the opposite of how most people believe in one religion & hate others, or believe in no religion & hates all, or this people hates that people because they come from the North or the South etc. He seems to understand all people and why they do what they do right or wrong, he puts that thinking into his characters. It’s why he has some of the most diverse characters, whether it’s the crazy serial killer, the mother who is just trying to protect her children, or the noble man trying to stay good in a cruel world.

Well, not quite. In ASOIAF, young dragons can be killed by weapons as their scales haven't hardened enough yet. But mature dragons can only be killed by a bolt to the eye. That's probably their only vulnerable spot.

You need only look at his "Not a Blog" to see he's done over a handful of interviews this October, undoubtedly taking time to travel and tour for his book sales. It's his life though, no one should be telling him what to do, and usually it's non-writers, trolls and short-minded individuals who point at these excellent interviews crying how he could have spent more time on the books. He can only write when the chapter comes to him, no interview or side-project is going to change his style, and it's produced (in my opinion) five epic tomes so far. That being said, if George keeps producing his tomes on pace with A Dance with Dragons and A Feast for Crows, he'll go from having a legacy as "The American Tolkien" to "The Author who failed his fans and let an epic fantasy saga go Unfinished." I'm sure he realizes this is his Magnum Opus, if I recall correctly he's said it himself in recent interviews. But compassion has to go both ways, George is entitled to live his life, fans are allowed to be upset and worried that, after the seemingly thousand-year-gap between the last books, he won't finish their beloved series.

Your point is like telling the parents of a child that the way they pronounce their child's name is wrong because you and other people pronounce it differently. He's pronouncing it his way, which is in fact that correct way no matter how its pronounced otherwise. Whether its a real world or not is irrelevant when we're talking about Georges world. And your point said 'But it's a real word, and it seems like he's using it in the real world sense' which is justifying that its got multiple pronunciations. Hes not talking about real life, hes talking about ASOIAF and so am I and in that world its pronounced however he says it is. The point you made, the way you worded it, does not defend my point, it is in fact against my point. While mispronouncing names and getting thing wrong does annoy me to no end, I think a lot of the time, hosts deserve some slack. Take these people for instance. To find a host, within their company/organization, who could tell apart the sigils of twenty houses would be an impressive feat indeed. They work with what they have a lot of the time.

***** That's almost like asking how somebody would be able know how to pronounce "Harry Potter" correctly since they've only read the name to themselves in a book. They know this by having a high enough reading level, and just saying the word out loud to themselves a few times to see if it sounds as right as it did in their head. I've been reading books my whole life, even The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings while I was in elementary school, so I never really had a problem with mispronouncing stuff (though I'm sure reading books like those before helped). She does deserve some slack, I guess, but she could have easily just looked up those names and other stuff on a smart phone really quick before coming on stage and asking the guest if she is getting stuff right about their story.

Jake Servo I wouldn't say it is at all like being able to pronounce Harry Potter. That's a very obvious example, whereas a good number of the names in asoiaf aren't, same with Tolkien's works too. And I don't feel you using your reading of Tolkien holds much merit either. Firstly, Tolkien puts a pronunciation guide in his books, so there's always that to consider. Secondly, even if you didn't use that guide, I wouldn't believe that you got every pronunciation correctly. You only mentioned the LotR and the Hobbit, but have you read the Silmarillion or the Unfinished tales, or what have you? Let's take some of the Elf lords. Celebrimbor, Celeborn, Cirdan the shipwright. You automatically knew all of them were pronounced with hard 'c' sounds? Lets look far more common examples though. Sauron and Smaug, two extremely recognizable names to Tolkien fans, and even many who aren't. Yet, there is a huge contingency of people who say, 'soron' and 'smog', rather than with the correct 'au', 'ow' sound. If you completely ignored Tolkien's pronunciation guides, then there'd be a good chance you'd screw up pronunciations somewhere. Now back to George's books. There are a hell of a lot of names that could be mispronounced, and are. I know from looking up on the internet that there are a large number of fans shocked to learn that Jaime Lannister is pronounced like the actual name Jamie. So many of the book readers believed it was pronounced 'Jaym'. Then there's a number of the Valyrians, with the common, 'aerys'/'erys' ending to their names. Was it 'air-ees', like the Greek god of war? Or was it 'air-is', a much softer intonation? Then there's Brienne of Tarth, who even in the audio books is mispronounced as 'Bri-een', rather than 'Bree-en'. The name Baratheon is far more commonly pronounced 'ba-rath-e-un', when George himself says, 'ba-rath-e-on'. How about the greatest city that was or ever will be? Some say 'karth', some say 'quarth'. Is Cersei, 'sir-see' or 'sir-say'? Is Stannis, 'stan-iss' or 'staan-iss'? There is a boatload of mispronunciations that could derive from reading the books, and to say a high level of reading alleviates that is frankly wrong. Like you, I read Tolkien when I was very young. When I was nine, The Two Towers was the first book I ever fully read. However, that does not make me invulnerable to mispronouncing things, especially when they're only written and not spoken. We have the benefit of being able to hear a lot of the names in the LotR movies and in GoT, and through audiobooks and interviews given and such, but it's unfair to say anyone who can read well should be able to pronounce things, particularly in this genre of fantasy writing. I would agree with you that people mispronouncing Harry Potter would be odd, but that in no way compares to the names in Tolkien or GRRM's works. As for the very last part of your comment, yes she could have and she very well might have done. However, especially with George's books, there are a lot of names to remember, and I wouldn't put it past someone who's not a crazy fan to make a mistake here and there. After all,there are hundreds of thousands of 'fans' who think Khaleesi is a name, not a title. Sorry for the novel.

I was responding to Bob's comment about how powerful Bran will become. A Dance With Dragons opens with Varymyr Sixskins hunting in a pack, as a warg. And when he hungers after human meat he remembers his father's (Haggon) views about warging, and what he calls "abominations": to eat human meat while in an animal was an abomination, to mate with a wolf while inside a wolf was an abomination, and, lastly, to take over the body of a human was an abomination. He even tries to warg into Thistle but she resists him. Now Bran is not just a warg. There are plenty of wargs, many in his own family. But if it is known of as an abomination to warg into humans, for regular wargs like Varymyr, a greenseer like Bran should be able to warg into people -- and does, as everybody knows he wargs into Hodor - and as powerful as dragons are, it has more to do with intelligence than power. Varymyr wargs into a bear, too. Now, there are horns like Dragonbinder said to be used by the Valryians to bond themselves with their dragons, though it's never suggested that they're wargs. Skinchanging should be the word for it, as warg is more explicit for the direwolves. Dragons are intelligent, sure, and maybe it would be impossible for a regular warg like Arya or Job to warg into another animal, especially a dragon, it shouldn't be beyond reason to think Bran would be able to do much more. He has range over *space and time* through the weirwoods, is thought to be the last greenseer. Many people mistake Bloodraven/the three-eyed crow's visions and apparitions as being those of a God. While I wasn't saying that Bran would be a literal old God, I was suggesting that someone with the power of a greenseer could hypothetically warg into a dragon, and to make short work of the white walker army, Bran in the body of Drogon seems like a pretty good weapon to have. I just thought it was an awesome idea for someone's character arc who is first thought to be a cripple, learns of his ability to warg and use the power of a greenseer, only to overcome his disability by flying -- something he is promised -- in the embodiment of strength and power. Not intending an argument with anyone, just a discussion. Cheers

A magnificent Fantasy based on George’s fantasies... of history of dragons fire, ice, kingdoms, war, dead ice walkers, ........I bought the complete series and I’m watching it for the fourth time and I’m still seeing scenes I managed to miss or not notice the connection to a certain kingdom!! I think this series is fantastically addicting!!! Not I have to buy the these books off Fire and Ice for my coffee table! An awesome series that I will never tire of!!!👌🏻

George RR Martin is a hero, I can listen to him all day talk on about anything not just ASOIAF. But why did they allow somebody with no knowledge on the subject interview him, she quite obviously watched the first season of game of thrones, not even read a single book and thinks or just pretends to be some fanatic so she can scrounge off making money. I would do it for free or even pay to interview him. She should have prepared herself.
