I remember driving my dads truck after he passed and he had this in his cassette player (this was in 2009.....he had a 91 Ford F-150 Lariat, in IMMACULATE condition). I remember turning the truck on, and this song starting, and I just sat there crying. Every time I hear this song, it makes me tear up. I remember going to rodeos with my dad when I was 5-6.....he rode the bulls and I rode calves....my sister did barrel racing......Oh what I would give to have it to do all over again.

The guy that originally wrote a recorded this song is from Amarillo Texas. He graduated from the same high school I did and is buried here in Amarillo. His name is Terry Stafford. He was a friend of my friends brother. George just made it even more popular and took it to the top of the charts years after it was a rock song.

And Terry Stafford did the song originally in 1973. Also wrote it. Strait did it in 1982 , and that is the one everybody seems to remember. Strait did good on it , but Stafford was the creator. He had a big hit in 60's with "Suspicion", which Elivis covered also. .

I have had three marriages, first gave me two kids and we lost their mother and I raised them by myself. Then I met a lady and fell for her. Turned out to be hell on earth but I made it 26 years before walking away and giving her the ranch and taking only my truck, dog, and saddle. After a bad spell in East Texas I met a lady from a ranch 60 miles south of Amarillo. We both rodeoed, her as a barrel racer and break away and I roped calf's. Happy now, love each other and spend a lot of time with the horses and some cattle, swapping rodeo stories, horses we've had, people we knew and just enjoying our lives. Oh yeah, it ain't a country western band without a fiddle.
