I am playing this in my orchestra, and my conductor made up a whole story bout what he thinks when he hears the piece... Here it is: So one vey cold morning a grumpy Russian man is in a pub, and he is thinking, "I wish I got a puppy for Christmas when i was younger". Flashback to his childhood. A little Russian boy runs downstairs to the Christmas tree hoping for a puppy, and he thinks a present is a puppy so he opens it. It was not a puppy, it was a toaster. He is sad, but then a flying puppy pops out of the toaster! The boy is happy, but then the puppy flies away, out the window! So now he is forever a grumpy Russian man who never got his puppy. Return to the pub. He sips his vodka, the a flying puppy appears next to his bottle! He hugs the puppy and the 2 run away into the distance. That is it... My conductor even threatened to turn the temperature in our rehearsal room down so it was cold like Russia, and he conducted the whole orchestra in a Russian accent... Welcome to my music department.

to understand this music.... a Farandole was a dance special to the south of France and is in fact a 'running' dance, i.e. the dancers are in line or a circle following one another, with all the dancer's hands joined fore and aft - they run very quickly as the increasing 'accelerando' of the music seeks to emulate.
