In this video, psychotherapist Georgia Dow revisits the topic of HBO's The Last of Us, specifically focusing on episode 7 and the theme of bonding in the face of adversity. Dow explores what makes a strong bond between characters, even when they are faced with immense challenges and difficulties. Using examples from the show, she illustrates how the characters' bonds are strengthened by their shared experiences, their willingness to trust and support each other, and their ability to overcome obstacles together. Dow also discusses the psychological mechanisms at play when people bond with each other, including the role of attachment, empathy, and resilience. Whether you're a fan of The Last of Us or simply interested in understanding how people form strong connections, this video offers valuable insights and practical tips for cultivating meaningful relationships in the face of adversity.

@@littlestarshepherd teenagers do dangerous stuff all the time. When you're that age you think you're ten feet tall and Bulletproof. They danced because they wanted to dance. They wore masks because Riley planned it that way and they wanted to be silly. It's as simple as that in a teenager's mind. I work with students from ages 15-19 on a regular basis. They are not usually thinking through the consequences, either in the short, medium, or long-term when they make their decisions. Teenagers are almost always more intuitive and empathetic than adults give them credit for, but they are also more impetuous as well.

Some people really undervalue this episode, but they also don’t understand just how much this Left Behind story turns Ellie into a fully realized character. It gives you so much information about her that you can basically map out her entire life story and psychological development up to this point and even to present day just seeing this one day of hers. It’s incredible writing. The most important thing you know about her is that because of her life experience, she places an incredibly disproportionate value on a small portion of her environment. She has these little items like her pocket knife, her walkman and her pun book that mean as much to her as all of our worldly possessions mean to us put together, because when you have almost nothing, you latch on to what little you have and they become incredibly precious to you. In that same vein, Riley is so precious to her for the same reason. For so long she had no one, not a single person she had to lose until Riley and this informs her social manner, she grows deeply deeply attached to one person at a time because that’s what she knows, it’s what she’s comfortable and happy with. The reason her loss doesn’t turn her into Joel, the reason why she opposite of him craves the kind of connection that he until now never wanted to have again, is because of Riley, because she taught Ellie that you fight for the things, the people that are precious to you, ”for every second we get to spend with each other”. And what I love is that this wasn’t some magic cure philosophy moment, no it made Ellie crave this kind of connection, but it didn’t equip her with the confidence to NOT have that, she is explicitly fearful of being alone. And this is so unbelievably important going forward yet also so important when you take all the stuff this episode shows you about her and then go back to previous episodes, because knowing these things make all of her scenes so much richer. You could rewatch the series and think of her as the protagonist just as much as Joel. Like when she sees that trapped infected and she cuts and kills it, that moment tells you so much about her, that from Left Behind she carries a resentment, both towards the infected and herself for not being capable enough to protect Riley, which is why she so early on is fascinated by Joel’s brutality when he defends her from the soldier, she sees what he’s capable of and she looks up to him, it’s the foundation of why she latches onto him in particular, she wants to be more like him, because if she was, she could have kept Riley from being bit, but also (and this is a bit more sinister) she could have given that infected what it fucking deserved for trying to take Riley away from her… Ellie’s anger is something that becomes so important moving forward and I actually really like that they’re laying the groundwork for it here more than even the game did!
@pjotrh

Where ellie is screaming: no, no, no….Ellie is angry at herself because finally she has something/someone and she knows she lost it right away. She blames herself for letting it slip, is angry with the world. And then she sees Riley is bitten, and can only think of Riley, her entire reaction flips. Also the clasped hands of happiness after the kiss. My heart.

To me, Ellie and Riley have one of the healthiest in recent memory relationships especially for teenagers because a lot of media that portrays teenagers or young adults is now pushing this whole “antagonistic relationships are the best” and these two have complete implicit trust in one another. Riley doesn’t push Elllie to do something that she would be 100% set against, she knows just how far her friend is willing to go and Ellie doesn’t fight against Riley‘s “leadership“ because she knows if she had put forward something that she’s 100% against Riley would not make her do it, they understand each other’s boundaries. I felt like Riley gave Ellie a sense of she belongs to someone, that someone is willing to go above and beyond to protect her while Ellie gave Riley a feeling of someone sees her worth, and that they are willing to follow her and her ideas something she didn’t get from FEDRA

I'm really curious how it is that some people don't understand that there is zero chance that young actors like Bella Ramsey and Storm Reid were going to be put in any sort of actual danger of falling off or falling through that glass. Even with older actors there are very serious precautions taken, but even more so with young actors like them. Is it just not understanding the safety protocols for working with young actors on set? Just like Nico Parker was never in any danger of actually being shot by Craig Mazin (who actually played the soldier in that death scene) those two girls were never in any danger of falling off or through that glass.
@classicslover

This is why people were taken out of the scene. The ONLY way that could be safe is if it was rigged. Plus...being in the industry and understanding insurance requirements, since they were masked, it was easier to swap them out for stunt people of the same build. Masks can be disorienting, a fall to one side and they hit their heads on the other counter. On the other side, they could hit their heads on the way down or fall back and hit their heads when they land. Or twist an ankle or twist a knee. Mats do not save people from that. the glass not being actual glass is also a known thing because regular glass would break. Which means the "reality" of the scene was non-existent thus hard to empathize for some.

So the kids that have been decapitated filming for movies don't count or the people that have died from prop weapons like the recent rust tragedy or Brandon Lee's death while filming The Crow. Watch the bonus content of the lord of the rings accidents and injuries are common on set and deaths are something that actually happen and have happened in film in Hollywood in big budget and low budget. So yes, there is danger and being a young actor does not mean your safer.

“The Last of Us“ is so humanistic! It lends itself to heartfelt realizations, such as those shared here by Georgia Dow: “When you think about the people that you care about in your life, it isn‘t what they say, or even what they do. It really is how they make you feel. …” Remember to not only be mindful of treating others with love and care and affirmation; also, firstly, treat yourself with understanding, love, and respect; and ferret-out and kick-out those who only fake that for you, and live your own, best, powerful, joyful, life!

My thoughts exactly. Of course we love to hear her opinion and her view on things. If she talked about the whole episode and her critique on that scene was just a part of it, I think people (myself included) wouldn’t have felt so weird about it or even put off by it. It also wouldn’t have left room for people to speculate on why she would skip the rest of the story. Like ending with the kiss scene but not saying a single word about it also left room for confusion and speculation. Well, decisions were made. Tho compared to a lot of critique you see on the internet, I think most of it this time came from people who usually LOVE her videos and still wanna support her but just thought this wasn’t the right way to go about things. Glad she’s back tho :)

I didn’t see your other video but I totally get what I think you said there. But I also think that because they’re kids and they were told the mall was empty, and Riley had been sleeping there and scoping it out for a while, they really believed they were safe, that they had no reason to be quiet or think there was any infected they could awaken in there. I mean, WE knew because we were told early on in like episode 2 that’s where she was bitten, and we were shown the guy waking up. But they had no idea. And they were just so joyful. It made it hurt that much more. 😭

To be fair, as a film maker (PA) I can assure you the actresses were safe filming it. The scenes where we saw the counter top were shot waist down, and they use doubles for that. Then the scenes that show the actresses were waist up, that don't show the counter. They'd have been doing it on a safe stage for sure, and just using different takes to show the whole thing. They don't do a singular take for the whole scene, and I think it's always important to remember that in dangerous looking scenes. We cut between different angles and parts of the body being filmed, so certain things can be done safely.

Very interesting to see you try and do this despite your struggle with that one scene. So excited to see what you DID take away from this episode, and what moments stood out to you as worth mentioning and analyzing. I hope my desire for you to do so didn't come across as you somehow not being allowed to make a video about a scene YOU struggled with though! I wasn't saying I did NOT want to know or hear about that experience, merely that I would be sad to miss out on your take of the scenes where you were not as distracted and taken out of it by worries about the safety of the actresses and an inability to see their faces etc. There were SO many moments I was sure you would have some great and valuable insights into that I didn't want that one scene to be all that was focused on. That being said, I loved that you talked about that moment taking you out of it, and your concerns, because it is genuinely an interesting insight into how YOU watch a show, and what "triggers" you have with regards to being taken out of the moment. It perfectly reflects your kindness and your concern for the welfare of others that it was thoughts of their likely discomfort in the masks and the potential risks to their physical safety that got to you. That was genuinely sweet and adorable, and me wanting this kind of analysis as well wasn't meant to make you feel your other video had no value or that you needed to delete it, because neither of those were true, nor the intended message in any way.

Hey Georgia, I enjoyed this vid, but I enjoyed your other one as well. I'm sorta glad to hear I wasn't the only one that was a little distracted with that dance scene. I knew the actresses were in no danger my concern was for the characters, you go through that glass display case and slice up your ankles that gonna get ya killed! XD This vid is great too, love the breakdowns you do. Don't feel too discouraged by the reactions to the other video. They both have value ^_^ Love your content and keep up the good work!

Hi G, I have watched several of your videos on TLOU both related to the video game & the series. I like your views and generally I find you to be rather entertaining, empathetic & wise. My previous post was meant to be a general observation, not a judgement. I figured you'd have explored more issues surrounding death, anxiety & loss, but you were expressing your own anxieties and it caught me off guard or struck me as unusual given how different the previous take was compared to other videos of yours I have seen. We all have unique perspectives and are provoked by different things in our own ways for our own reasons and that's a good thing actually. I think you did a great job of more fully unpacking what was a defining moment for the main character in the series, given that this is where she would eventually learn of her immunity and be faced with her feelings around love & loss and the death anxiety that comes with facing our own mortality. Thank you and I apologize if my previous comments came off as overly judgemental.

I honestly was surprised by the first video, but I enjoyed it because it was different, more focused on your perspective. So even though I'm glad to have a more conventional redo, you may think of doing more stuff like the first one, just call it 'Therapist reacts to (...) extra/plus' so your audience doesn't confuse them with a full analysis.

I think it would be an awesome study to lay both videos side by side so that we can see it from various perspectives. I think many viewers may not always agree, and may even have a negative thing to say. But negative in a constructive and respectful way can also boost positivity in the sense communication is open and honest. Humanising. Plus, from what I am seeing, I believe many people had the same reaction due to concerns. The fact it was a safety concern pulling one out from the scene shows a consideration for creative and people, which can only be positive in intention even if not in execution. I cannot tell you how amazing it is to see someone admit how they felt and empathise with other people instead of trying to rug sweep it. it shows a great deal of integrity.

I definitely agree with the whole „Riley is being taken away by a different group“, but additionally, to me Ellie‘s reaction pinned down way more about thinking Riley had planned out this whole amazing night for her, confirming that she was special, but when she finds out Riley actually just sort of stumbled into all of this because of being stationed there, Ellie gets angry out of embarrassment and perceived rejection- it’s not „Oh she likes me back, right? She planned this whole amazing night for me!“ now it seems like „She was here for something else and just thought it was cool, god I misread all of that I am so STUPID.“ even though she probably wouldn’t even be able to vocalize that in that moment. Often when we subconsciously feel rejected we lash out instead, especially if we also feel embarrassed about misreading someones signals. She even yells „None of this was even about me!“ This is likely the first person in her life to show her any affection and show that she knows her- and also the first person she has a crush on. It’s hard enough to figure this out in a secure world, with healthy family structures, but for Ellie this must be a legitimate emotional rollercoaster

Love your show, sorry the Internet bullied you into feeling bad about your first video, you should never feel ashamed about being honest with yourself and should always be true to yourself. Something I don’t see many people point out, in episode 3, so when the Cordycepts are like half mushroom and half human, those are the stage 2 variants, Stalkers, a rarer enemy type in the game and I guess show, though they behave more differently by attacking and going back into hiding, anyway it’s the same variant that attacked her in the mall, so the one in EP 3 where she sliced open the forehead it wasn’t really morbid curiosity but anger, and since it was under rubble she made the process slow and thinking of Riley.

You already know I loved the last video on this, Georgia. Things that bring about an emotional disconnect...bounce you OUT of a story...are VALID. And no one should be telling you the way you felt about it was not valid by complaining about your topic choice, or trying to tell you how you should have felt about it instead. I mean, REALLY? Perhaps they should have tried to understand where you were coming from, thanked you for it...and then asked politely for an additional video on that episode. You're not an unfeeling robot and people should have empathy for you as well. Instead of trying to make you feel bad. This video too. was rather excellent...as all of your videos have an unfaltering habit of being. = )

Hi Georgia. I always love your videos as it has been clear to me that it comes from caring and loving individual ,who has really good intentions. I can realate to how you feel about not wanting to upset others but doing so unintentionally without realising. I hope after thie video people realise that their offense was purley due to miss communication, which is no ones fault. You can't be held responabile for how people interpret your videos title and thumbnail. They cant help feeling upset because of their reaction which of course is very understandable due to the way they have been treated. I hope people learn from this that people, who offend them don't always have cruel intentions. I have autistic spectrum disorder and experience miss communication on both sides. I struggle to empathise but I am trying. I wish people would believe me too! I am not angry as I don't blame anyone I just wish I had better interpersonal skills Hope you realise how much good you do!!!!!!!

I was indeed a little sad with last week's video that it more so focused on that one scene but I respected your choice for your channel! I hope this video is your actual thoughts tho and not something you fealt like you had to do because people didn't like your last one! Kuz it was still good!!! (The thumbnail tag line was...a bit leading tho I was afraid you were going to not empathize with ellie and Rileys journey/relationship ...BUT I watched it and was pleasantly surprised lol) There is one thing about the episode that's not said but i feel likes implied in game and show. Is that because of Rileys choice/ wish to spend their last moments together ellie lives. So not only did they get to spend as much time together as possible but Riley was able to save ellie one more time♡ Which kinda ties into the idea that it's possible there were/are/will be more people immune...but they usually end it themselves or are killed before they can find out. Ellie only lived because of this unique situation of them being alone, both bit and Riley asking her to keep going for as long as possible.

I'm really glad you addressed this. It's all good!! I was one of the grumpy people, but if you don't take those chances you never know what works. I always appreciate people who can just say, hey my bad and not take the critique as a personal attack. I love your content and I love your self awareness even more. I used to watch another therapist (very popular on YT) and his videos got progressively more about his opinion than the psychology behind the subjects he was supposed to be analyzing. Completely turned me off because his biases started to show. Had to unsubscribe and mute from suggestions. He ignored all of his fans who have watched his content for half a decade and instead fed his own ego. Pretty disappointing. So thank you for not being...that. Great video! Edit: You provide an insight that most other channels just can not. There are a million people on YT giving opinion based reviews, the insight you give goes way beyond that. You're teaching us about the human condition, which to me is far more interesting. It's much appreciated.

I'm glad you did a redo as I think there was more that you could've said about the episode, but I don't think you should've gotten rid of your original thoughts. I think they are still valuable and worthwhile to keep online. You shouldn't worry about negative reactions to anything you wish to talk about. Sometimes people overreact because they're worried they're missing out on the type of content they like due to some reason (whether misunderstanding, etc.) Analyzing the text of the episode separate or in conjunction to your worries of the actors' health would've definitely held back any backlash. People aren't afraid of new things or differing perspectives, people are afraid of loosing what they like/agree with!

I missed the first one but I can assure you it wouldn't have mattered to me all that much, just about the only thing that offends me is if someone is offending or hurting the people I care about. I never had many people actually bond with me that deeply, and I would love that have that one person that I have a bottomless bond with. It is true for us INFJ, we do pretty much keep everyone at arms length, mainly because of the lives we lead. Anyway, someone that has that strong accountability taking attitude is always alright in my book, that is something I learned at a young age. However, I have no idea how I will be if I were in a situation where I had to keep someone calm about dying or worse. When you have never been in a situation, you never know how you will react till it happens.

Love the Last of Us and I love your Last of Us videos, so I was very happy when I saw you redo ep 7. Ep 7 is my 2nd favorite episode of the whole series. Feel like people who never played the game don't realize how pivotal this episode truly is. It's the catalyst for the whole show. Think about it, the first person Ellie had to kill was her first love. What kinda damage does that do to a person. You understand why she can't just leave Joel to die. The hate this episode is getting as just "filler" is heart breaking. Edit: Unpopular opinion: Storm Reid should win Best Guest Actor over Nick Offerman.
