@paul1979uk20002 жыл бұрын
Most of the same expressions are used in the UK, I think there was only 1 or 2 that wasn't really used in the UK but I understood what they meant, also that fine and dandy one, not really that common anymore but it was used in the older days in the UK, I remember it from when I was a kid but hardly anyone uses it today so I suspect most youngsters don't know that one.
@nullakjg7672 жыл бұрын
UK culture is just american culture at this point. Americans wont watch a british show but british people will watch american movies. When a british actor becomes famous enough, they move to america to further their career. So british people know all about american culture. Its americans who know nothing of british culture. They dont produce anything we want to consume so it doesnt rub off.

A dandy is someone attempting to be aesthetically pleasing perhaps even above their status in the 18th/19th century... It came to be known for high aspirational dress sense and/or demeanour. So fine and dandy is feeling good and looking good. You don't feel dandy, you look dandy... As a kid I remember people saying don't you look dapper or dandy, or maybe the more childish don't you look like a fancy-pants...

The saying 'the best thing since sliced beard' can't be 100 years old seeing as sliced bread was first invented, or the machine that slices it anyway, in 1928. Hence why they tended to say the actress Betty White, America's darling who recently passed away just short of her 100th birthday, was older than sliced bread as she was born in 1922.

the thing about the saying.. they say that sliced bread was so great is because at the time they started using machines to slice bread for mass production, they also started making bread with minerals and vitamins mixed in. before that bread wasn't actually too nutritious. so the greatness of bread being sliced was actually just an event which lined up with slicing and actually was making bread good for you.
