Robin Williams was, even off coke, an ADD comic who COULD NEVER finish a sentence, let alone a bit, if he sensed even the SLIGHTEST bit of audience discomfort/silence. Williams has NOT EVEN ONE stand-up bit that’s coherent/sustains a pov that ANYONE remembers….LET ALONE MULTIPLE OF THEM THAT ARE TIMELESS LIKE CARLIN. FOH mentioning him in the same breath as Carlin (outside of their comparable cocaine abuse in the ‘the 70s…other than that, gtfoh…Williams is a lightweight comedic mind compared to Carlin in EVERY SENSE except for maybe moronic physical comedy/mimicry. In terms of making their audiences laugh AND think, Robin was NO MATCH for the master of the form, GC)

There’s so many George Carlin bits that you should react to. Modern man, losing things (the version that’s part of his HBO special Playing With Your Head) people who oughta be killed, time, sports, baseball vs football, proud to be an American/god bless America, taking off your hat, things we say when people die, keeping people alert, and interview with Jesus. Those are just some of the many George Carlin bits that you should react to.

Carlin as a comedian: totally agree with the consensus. One of the greatest who ever did it. His observations, the way he structured his bits, his vocal cadence, gestures, his artful use of the English language, all that stuff - they were genius, hugely influential, and rightly so. Carlin as a thinker/philosopher/whatever: ehh. There's some good and some bad. His points about censorship, corruption, hypocrisy, greed etc. were all spot-on, groundbreaking, and very necessary for audiences of the '70s, '80s and early '90s to hear. But over time, as he kept getting darker and more nihilist - this started around the mid-'90s and was in full bloom by the '00s - he started making it more and more clear that he's not interested in actually finding solutions to any of the problems he talks about, and that his opinion is he finds humanity's self-destruction amusing. Now there's a fine line between being an intelligent social commentator who asks uncomfortable questions vs. a trying-too-hard edgelord, and I just can't go that far down the rabbit hole with him. I'm never gonna say let's give up hope and let's not even bother trying to clean up the mess. At one point he literally adopted "Fuck Hope" as a sort of slogan for himself - you hear those words pop up in some of his mid to late '90s routines, and he goes deeper into the whole thing in one of his books, I can't remember which. I mean, he was getting older by that time and maybe he knew he wouldn't live long enough to see what the end result of giving up hope looks like. But shit, I'm only 39. I've still got half my life left. I don't want to die in that kind of world if I can help it. Also, the personality cult that's developed around him on social media gives me pause, with quotes from some of his bits that get taken out of context and go viral. You especially see a lot of the Alex Jones/InfoWars people, the QAnon people, and those types worshiping Carlin and reposting his stuff. I think if he were alive today, he would probably have been smart enough to warn his audience away from all that. But I do think it's tragically ironic that his core message was that people should question authority and shouldn't blindly believe everything people in power say, and yet today his fans are the ones who don't question HIS authority and blindly believe everything HE said. I wonder if 2020 Carlin would have been calling people out for that. I like to think he would, but on the other hand, comedy is how he pays his bills and these are the people buying the tickets, so who knows.
