Ironically, Johnny is the opposite of a 'player', at least in the romantic sense. He heavily supports and advocates for the rights of women and holds all ladies in high regard, to the point his favourite piece of media to consume is a magazine series known as 'Dynamic Housewives'. Johnny stole a giant fleet of airships from a flying country and established the Jellyfish Pirates as a group. All the main members of the pirates, par himself, are young women that he effectively adopted, and thus he sees them as both his compatriots and his daughters - one of these is May, who unfortunately has a horribly intense crush on Johnny. He's a lot like Robin Hood in the case that he breaks unfair laws down to bring good fortune to the poor. Speaking of fortune, Johnny is INCREDIBLY lucky. Whether this is via some form of magic or just straight-up good luck is up for debate, but regardless it seems his luck is significant enough for people to see him as luckier than gods, which is what 'Just Lean' is about. Also, the title 'Just Lean' reflects Johnny's "what happens, happens" lifestyle. He's happy to tell people to not focus too hard on life and to 'just lean'.

Vampires in the Guilty Gear universes are known as the Nightless; a noticeable difference between them and vampires is that they have pretty much no weaknesses and are unkillable so long as they have a fairly steady supply of blood. Slayer's been alive for well over a millenium at this point in the timeline, and he's a lot more than you think. Born in Scotland to a long lineage of Nightless, Slayer eventually grew to enjoy a lifestyle known as Dandyism, which is described as a 'religious view on aesthetics' often associated with 19th-century vanity. Essentially, on paper, Dandyism is the belief that looking like a foppish Victorian noble is the best way to live, but Slayer elevates this by bringing this outlook to life itself; to live life to the fullest and accept death when it comes, but to never allow death to take you without proving your right to live. Slayer's moveset in-game is very floaty and elegant but laden with immense power, a sort of mirror into how he views Dandyism. He's also very wise having lived for so long, often acting as a mentor for countless characters in the series, including Sol Badguy, Millia Rage, Zato=1, Venom, and Nagoriyuki, the final three of whom are also devout followers of Dandyism, and the final of whom was actually turned into another Nightless by Slayer himself. He's actually the guy that gave Mr. Badguy the forename 'Sol', too. Also, you may have seen the attractive woman with Slayer who he drinks blood from in his Xrd intro. This is Sharon, a woman cursed with immortality who Slayer met among his travels. She doesn't have to feel pain if she doesn't want to and literally nothing can kill her. Blow her up? She reconstitutes. Burn her? She dusts off the ashes. Rip her apart? She'll complain that you scratched her dress. She's a perfect match for Slayer, who she genuinely loves and vice versa, gladly offering her endlessly regenerating blood to her husband when he needs it. If you're thinking 'but what if Slayer is hurt, and Sharon isn't around?', then note that Slayer's cape is pretty much his saving grace. It's a cape, a parachute, clothing, a teleportation device, a blade, a shield, an umbrella, a bandage, a bed, a bag, anything you can think of. He literally uses it to bring himself, Sharon, a patio chair and table, and a tea set to wherever he fights, just so Sharon isn't left at home by herself and she gets to enjoy watching her husband fight.

@@georgieegames IIRC Johnny's teacher told him to never rely on anyone except himself unless desperate. So he doesn't risk people making bad calls in tense situations and prefers to handle everything himself. He gets his confidence from being self-sufficient enough to provide for people in his life. Also this leads to a lot of friction between May who is in love with Johnny but Johnny prefers to act on his own and has no desire for romance. He's very much into his freedom but not in a smash and dash way, he genuinely thinks that committing is limiting his options and making him less competent. It's a whole philosophy. Also his song says he is hated by the god of failure because he never loses lol.

Great analysis as always! I-No is a time traveller who has seen a "dull, grey future" and has been trying everything possible to avoid it. However, after countless attempts, she has lost track of what is real for her current timeline, and has become quite jaded. At the time of Strive, she is trying one last gamble of godly proportions to change the future, no matter the cost to herself. Johnny is pretty much exactly as you said, a Robin Hood -style outlaw and something of a playboy. In addition to dressing like a cowboy and using a katana, he is also a pirate captain. We really know very little of Johnnys past, so much so that we don't even know his last name, but the idea of him being a priest that became a playboy pirate is hilarious. And then there's Slayer, the dandy vampire himself! He is the founder of the Assassin Guild, which Zato and Millia were both a part of. It was originally supposed to be a force of good, but after he met his immortal wife Sharon and retired, the Guild went a bit off the trails. He has officially been retired since before his first appearance, but he just cannot help himself from getting involved in the big world events. Slayer is also very funny in that he actively mocks all the classic vampire tropes, incorporating crosses into his clothing, freely walking in the sun by just wearing a super-strong sunscreen and shrugging off getting stabbed in the heart no problem.

Slayer is such a great character. He's an incredibly old vampire who used to be the leader of Assasin's guild until he retired. He's one of the most powerful characters in the game and usually has to hold back when fighting others. He also follows the philosophy of dandyism (there's a meme in the community of people saying "dandy" when they refer to him). He also loves romance and poetry - his wife Sharon (the woman in red skirt) is a human that he loves dearly and his victory pose at the end of the battle is creating really bad haikus with her. I love love love Johnny's theme ❤. It feels like a folk song people sing about him, which makes it stand out from the other GGST songs, which are mostly from the character's own PoV. Regarding the God of Failure and the Goddess of Fate, they are purely metaphorical and hyperbolic; as if he was so successful that the Gods themselves couldn't make him fail, which is why they hate him or smtg like that. If you're looking for more suggestions, I'd recommend Hellfire, which is Leo's theme. It's a great song with a clear story that is too often slept on. Thank you for another great video ❤

you were pretty close with I-no, its a long story but basically she was a regular person that due to some unfortunate story events became a god infused with all of humanities will and motivation. becoming an antagonist and leaving herself with no emotions or motivation of her own. In the story she becomes a perfect being to try to rid humanity of all free will to keep them alive forever. she does get defeated by plot shenanigans and does in fact die. she's also tied with happy chaos in a few ways but that's a pretty complicated rabbit hole.

About the book line in Johnny's theme, there's actually two reads of the line: The one you have here "would it have repeated all": Which means that Johnny is such a cool and perfect guy in the eyes of the others that he took all the right decisions in life by himself. And the other "wouldn't have ripped it up": That goes more to his outlaw and rebellius nature, being handled all the right choices to his hand and rip it up to have his own way. The book itself is more just a methaphor to this choices, just a book to tell the story of Johnny and destiny in that line. There is a very important book in Guilty Gear tho, but that's other character's thing.

So to give a tldr about Slayer, indeed he is a vampire, but also an immortal vampire. His big deal is that he is essentially Sol’s mentor due to events of the plot happening and Sol gaining immortality as well (way more complicated than that but I’ll keep it brief lol) In fact he gave Sol his name because he reminded him of the sun, hence Sol. But anyway, he’s been around a REALLY long time and he’s currently retired from being a former assassin guild leader that certain other characters in the game were a part of. That girl beside him and sometimes inside his cloak is Sharon, his wife, who’s also actually immortal so anytime he sucks her blood out know she’s totally fine lol. Also lore wise in GG vampires are called the Nightless, and he’s also one of the most powerful people in the world.

A breakdown of all 3 characters: I-No was created by the Backyard, the alternate dimension that rules everything, as the condensation of all the wild emotions humanity felt during the Crusades (big war against the Gears). This made her incredibly powerful, but the first magic user (The Original) took away half of her power in an attempt to minimize the damage she might cause, and with her power, he took her emotions as well. She was not born alone, however, as the Backyard also created her equal and opposite in Axl Low. Either way, I-No was born with the power to travel anywhere in time, but no matter what she did, she always saw a grey boring future for all of humanity. As such she strove to change it due to her (fake) memories of an earlier, more mundane life where she dated Axl Low. In the previous game, Guilty Gear Xrd, I-No learned that all her memories were fake and she was a glitch not meant to exist, which spiraled her into an existential crisis and culminated in her attempt to find meaning by becoming a literal God in Guilty Gear Strive when she re-united with The Original, now called Happy Chaos. She was, however, defeated and killed. Johnny is the leader of a group of air pirates called the Jellyfish Pirates. He was orphaned in the Crusades, but a man took him under his wing and taught him how to fight and survive. Since then Johnny has convinced himself and a good amount of people that he is just the coolest motherfucker ever and that the happinness of every woman in the world depends on him. He stole his little pirate fleet from Zepp (Potemkin's home country) and is a borderline mythical figure within the world of Guilty Gear, Robin Hood-esque. His crew is composed exclusively of young women he rescued from warzones and raised as his daughters and each one is named after a month of the year. Beyond that, he is also just, ridiculously strong for a normal human, with his swordsmanship being some of the best in the world. Also there are no straight up gods in the Guilty Gear universe that we know of (well... ignoring the Original's god-like understanding of Magic and I-No's short-lived stint as a God), it's just that Johnny is ridiculously lucky and ridiculously skilled, so to a layman it looks like he simply can't fail (therefore he'd be hated by a speculative God of Failure). Slayer is a vampire, or more specifically a Nightwalker. Unlike normal vampires, Nightwalkers do not get killed by the sun, or really by anything other than not drinking enough blood. Slayer is also unfathomably ancient, and the single strongest raw fighter in Guilty Gear, only losing out to time travel and literal god-like manipulation of magic. Due to the fact that basically no one ever poses a challenge to him, Slayer massively holds back in every fight, mainly fucking around for entertainment. He is the world's most married man, loyally bound to his wife Sharon that is, also, immortal, to the point he can suck her dry (of blood!) and she'll just... get back up. They are united in their love for each other, really shit haikus, and Slayer's personal philosophy of DANDYISM. Dandyism defines Slayer's lifestyle, because having lived so long, he has done basically anything you can think of. In fact, he was the leader of the Assassin's Guild and Zato=1's master, even passing down Dandyism to Zato. Occasionally, Slayer will leave his house to seek out strong opponents and stretch his limbs, but since retiring from the Assassin's Guild, he has mostly chilled at home with his wife.

Glad you finally got around to "Requiem;" it's one of my top 3 favorite songs alongside "Drift" and "Mirror of the World." Fun fact: it's the only song on the soundtrack whose title isn't mentioned once in the song itself. Also, lyrical correction in "Just Lean": "She was told" is "it's anyone's call"; In the opening verse, "thinking that hard" is "thinking bad thoughts"; "Death is king men dare to waste life's grace" is "it's his kingdom and none dare to waste life's grace"; "would it have repeated it all?" is "wouldn't have ripped it up"; in "hated by the Goddess of Fate," change "hated" to "envied"; "some foolish diamonds" is "unpolished diamonds." This song's one of the easiest to mishear and misinterpret, since it's Daisuke and Naoki trying to channel Aerosmith vibes through a heavy Engrish barrier, but it' a great one nonetheless. EDIT: Also, not sure, but I think "heartbeat stopped" is "hardly the stuff" in Slayer's theme, but I can't say for sure.

When humanity was in the middle of a war known as the Crusades in the Guilty Gear lore, their hope and emotions became personified in an alternate reality known as the Backyard (where all magic and Gear Cells came from). These emotions created a sentient being known as a Magical Foci which we know as I-No. However, I-No was so immensely strong due to the intense emotional power put within her that she would have blown up and taken a good chunk of existence itself with her. Fortunately, an Irish magi-scientist known as "The Original" finds I-No while traversing the Backyard and saves all of humanity by siphoning half of her nigh-infinite power into himself. This sends him insane and turns him into the emotion-filled demigod Happy Chaos, and I-No is seemingly left emotionless and thus very nihilistic. The reason she appears as such a sexually attractive woman is a double-ended answer; humanity stereotypically finds nude women very attractive and thus I-No's body was designed by humanity's happy emotions, but due to her losing her emotions when Happy Chaos stole them from her to save everyone, she fakes genuine emotion in the easiest way - feigning lust. Also, I-No's name both refers to guitarist Brian Eno as well as the title 'No Identification'. Essentially, imagine it as everybody in the world having an ID number. I-No accidentally had to share her ID with timespace-travelling British punk Axl Low since she was never supposed to exist, making the two connected by fate. This is why it is also revealed that I-No's face is based on the face of Axl Low's former girlfriend, Megumi. When she dies at the end of -STRIVE-, she uses the last of her power to pull Megumi through spacetime so Axl can live happily with her. I-No's story is stupidly sad but also insanely empowering as it's the dichotomy of apathy and empathy that make I-No so interesting.

I-No's song is called "Requiem", a requiem is a musical tradition of offering song for the dead to offer them peace. It's a reflection on their life and a confirmation of their effect on others. I'll do what I can to specifically try to elucidate on the Bedman section in the Ups and Down music video, though I certainly am no Guilty Gear deeplore scholar myself, here's a decent TL;DR: During the events of Xrd, the game prior to Strive, Bedman was on team Bad Guy, working under an entity known as the Universal Will. As an extremely powerful psyker, his brain was so overclocked it would actually fry him alive should he be awake (same with his sister Delilah, who the Universal Will said they could help fix that with following her. When revealed the Universal Will was lying to him, Bedman casted his final magics during his dying moments, helping to repair Delilah and very likely causing the complicated background with Bedman? in Strive.) Naturally, with being ABSURDLY overpowered in storyline cutscenes, Slayer got the Assassin Guild back together (Zato, Millia, and Venom, who is likely to show up in Season 4) to try and take Bedman down during the course of the story. When a combined attack failed, Slayer would eventually lead Bedman out for a mano-to-mano confrontation, resulting in the featured cutscenes where he unleashes his full vampire glory to take on Bedman and try to weaken him down.

I-No is very angsty deep down. A glitch in the fabric of reality born from humanity's hope and desparation during the Big Backstory War, she's a near godlike being from a timeline that doesn't exist with memories of things that never happen, and she's saved and doomed the world in the past with her ability to time travel, becoming apathetic and unfeeling about anything in the process as everything is so... nothing in the face of her abilities. She's trying to regain her full godlike powers and alter reality to try and find humanity's answer to what they'd do if death and conflict meant nothing. Considering the theme is named "Requiem" the death elements are... apt. She also has a move called "Stroke the Big Tree" and in some previous games had barely visible side nipple! Got a couple M ratings from that... I wouldn't describe I-No as either good or evil, she's just a being with cosmic abilites and thoughts beyond that. Pretty much the only character she's on good terms with is fellow time traveler Axl Low. Johnny! He's been around since the fist game, but wasn't playable until the second, Guilty Gear X. A gambler and Iaido practitioner, Johnny lost his father at a young age during the Crusades (Big Backstory War) and now seeks to help orphans and those and need. He's the founder leader of the Robin Hood esque all female Jellyfish Pirates, though the amount of time he spends in jail, on solo missions, finding new members, or getting into trouble means May handles a lot of the duties. He's ridiculous, loves women, thinks all their hopes and happiness rests on his shoulders and is 100% sincere in that. Despite his crew being all female and he seeming like a womanizer, he explicitly sees the crew as family... even if May feels differently about him. He doesn't have much to do with Strive's story, just some minor backstory about him knowing Giovanna. The references to godhood in this theme I always interepreted to a reference to his gambling easygoing way. Slayer is vampire and the founder of a philosophy he calls Dandyism. Don't worry about his wife Sharon, she's immortal so he can drain all her blood and she's fine. Being alive for centuries he likes observing humanity. He's also mentored both Zato-1 and Nagoriyuki, and is a good friend of Gabriel, Potemkin's boss. And yes, a lot of those visuals were from the previous Guilty Gear story arc, the Xrd games. I think you should check out Perfection Can't Please Me (Jack-O's theme), The Gravity (Asuka's theme), Rock and Roll Rock Hard Maniac (DLC theme), and Tsuki no Shihai (from Revelator, Raven's theme).

Without getting to into details, Ino was literally magically made to fix the world and she’s messed with the time line endless times and can NEVER get it right and it’s definitely had a hard harsh effect on her mindset. Also, regarding Slayer: I love that in defiance of the usual trope, he isn’t a vampire with a harem of women but a single wife he is clearly madly in love with. ❤

He has a strong moral character and will always save any suffering woman he finds. He is the founder of a pirate crew with multiple stolen flying ships and all of the crew are effectively his adopted daughters Slayer is an ancient scottish vampire who is a retired professional assassin. He enjoys practicing dandyism and is one of the single strongest creatures on the planet. His wife is an immortal human woman due to an information glitch in an extradimensional space that is connected to our universe

You're one of my favorite people to watch react to Guilty Gear, I'd love to see you watch the trailer, play the game, or even watch the story for yourself. It's such a great series from so many angles, music, gameplay and story it's all peak. If you want the proper Guilty Gear story experience then my recommendation is to first watch the first 4 episodes of WoolieVersus's Guilty Gear lore series on KZbin, and then (if you have the time) watch the story modes for Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN, and Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator, which are both officially uploaded to KZbin, and rather than being gameplay focused, they're essentially just an anime with no gameplay at all, and yes that crazy scene with Slayer fighting Bedman is from that story mode and it's hype. Just a note tho, once you finish Xrd SIGN, you'll want to watch the beginning section of Woolies 6th video, which goes over the arcade mode of Revelator, because those arcade mode routes are relevant to the story. SIGNs arcade mode routes are covered at the end of episode 4. Once you do that, and then watch Revelator, and the additional episodes added in REV 2, you'll be caught up and you can go into Strives story mode (also basically an anime) with all the context you need! Strives arcade mode routes take place after the games story mode so you don't gotta worry about em. If you wanna make it less complicated and less time consuming you could just watch Woolies series all the way thru instead of taking the time to experience Xrd properly, but imo it's super worth the time investment. So basically: Woolieversus Guilty Gear lore episodes 1-4 > Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN > Woolieversus GG lore episode 6 (just the first section of the video) > Xrd Revelator > Xrd REV 2 extra episodes > Strive :D Usually I'd start absolutely yapping explaining each character but if you end up actually watching the story then I definently don't want to spoil you on I-No especially, her story is something special. Slayer is just so cool an immortal Dandy Vampire who is just vibing enjoying life to the fullest, the women in the red dress thats allways with him is his wife Sharon, who is a sort of Glitch in the Universe, in Guilty Gear the rules of the universe are basically like the code of a computer, for some reason there is some clause in there that specifyes that Sharon is allways well, she does not age, she does not die, she can not recive lasting damage, she is the most resilient thing in the Universe of Guilty Gear, because even if she is hurt or killed the universe just immediatly rewrites itself so that she is fine... I love the immagery of Slayer and Bedman fighting in the wasteland, imo one of the coolest moments in GGXrd.

Funnily, with Jhonny, his power is being so cool he can't fail. So the gods are metaphorical/hyperbole that he is so good that not even gods can make him fail. Also the thick book part is also hyperbole in saying that if he was religious would he essentially be the second coming of jesus.

Johnny is the leader of a gang of air pirates that consist solely of women and girls aside from himself. He has the reputation of a womanizer, and is big flirt, so you'd assume all the girls in his crew where romantuc interests of his- but no! Most of them are war orphans whom Johnny has rescued and raised, and he sees them all as his family. Underneath his bravado, Johnny is a very kind-hearted man who's wanted by the law but loved by the people, being a "Robin Hood" kinds pirate who takes from the rich and gives to the poor, helping those in need wherever he can. And aspect of Johnny that you'd never really know unless you read his bios (cause Johnny himself never brings it up) is that he himself was a war orphan, losing his father at a very young age. His late father was his main inspiration for becoming a pirate who helps people like this, so it might be that a lot of Johnny's "persona" is based around the kinda man he remembers his father to have been. Johnny rarely, if ever, let's his cool guy attitude slip, always trying to make sure his girls never see him nervous or scared, etc., just putting on a brave face for them, always. Slayer's interesting- he's a vampire, yes, and he's been one since birth, being part of an old lineage of vampire nobility. However, by the time of Guilty Gear's events, Slayer is now (thought to be) the last of his kind. Perhaps because of this, Slayer has a curious relationship with humans. He likes to observe them, the way a human might watch animals, yet it's also not like he doesn't consider them people either. It's complicated. Slayer isn't always nice to humans, especially ones he considers boring, but he is never cruel, either. In fact, he seemingly disliked hunting them like prey-even if he did require their blood-cause it didn't match his ideals of morality and Dandyism (a real life philosophy/lifestyle which Slayer strongly belives in, look it up if you're curious) There's a loooot of story here what with how old Slayer is and how many of the characters he's actually connected to but, uh Skipping over a lotta stuff (though it's crucial), eventually he met a human woman named Sharon, who due to mysterious circumstances was completely immortal. So, she could allow Slayer to simply drink her blood, freeing him from the need to kill peoole to sate his hunger. Over time, the two of them fell in love and got married. These days, Slayer is enjoying retirement (?) with Sharon, trying not to get himself involved in anything (tho he often still does), cause he wants the humans be able to solve their problems by themselves, rather than fix everything with his super-human powers. Plus, there's some involvements in human affairs he's had in the past that he regrets- humans he mentored whom he didn't treat with proper consideration, actions that kickstarted massive snowball effects, etc. That's kinda the duality of Slayer, just a friendly old guy but also the most powerful man on the planet. Also, I-no's hat is actually a living being and it taljs and stuff! (But only in like, the intros of her matches and such, it somehow never comes up in Story Mode, haha) In a sense, I-no herself is the person who created the world of Guilty Gear as we know it- like others said, she was a normal woman who, seemingly by sheer coincidence, was given the power of a god, but then had a good deal of her memory and identity taken from her, as well as half of her power. However, she was now ageless and had the ability to travel through time- Ever since then she's been seeking thrills and excitement by any means necessary, time travelling so much that she changed the past, thus erasing the timeline/world she came from and creating the one we know instead. As a result, her memories of her life as a human faded even more and started feeling fake to her. (Some of the lyrics in her theme allude to this aspect as well

I-no is basically a time traveler who saw that the future SUCKED, tried to change it, and failed. Repeat until becoming an insane, ruined person who lost almost all sense of morality and self. Nothing feels real once you've been through it all that many times. As of last game, she was in a sadomasochistic phase, but this time around she's super muted and depresso. ...she's also a magical manifestation of the Universal Will, had half her powers stolen by Happy Chaos before she was "born" so she wouldn't destroy the world, is Axl's girlfriend from thousands of timelines ago, was briefly god before being kinda-sorta-deleted but actually more like reset...it gets a bit confusing at parts. The funnest part about Slayers wife, Sharon, is that she is a 'normal' human except for a "glitch in the matrix" (kind of like with I-No but different) that makes her fully immortal. So she willingly lets Slayer suck her dry for blood all the time (like that bit with Slayers intro from the older game). He gets to keep his bloodthirstiness in check, she just pops back out of nowhere unharmed and they are both immortal. They are literally perfect for each other.

I-no is a bit complicated to explain by I'll try my best to summarize her i-no is basically a glitch she has no past of future due to a "swap"(she seems to share some connection with axl low and due to this she has some memories of him but they are very fuzzy) and due to this she has no memories and cant feel anything in fact the reason she likes music and conflict so much is because it's the only way she can feel something shes very powerful and takes pleasure in other's pain she believes that due to her having no past and no future shes exempt from most consequences. johnny is the complete opposite of what he looks and comes off as he is a major advocate for women's safety and is trying to stop all bad things from happening to them he believes that the happiness of all women is his responsibility he has canonically asked ino to stop calling herself a witch because he is trying to erase all words that paint women in a bad light he is also obscenely lucky for some reason like stupid lucky hence the "hated by the god of failure and loved by the goddess of fate"part of his theme

In terms of their designs, Johnny has an alt that gives him a scruffy beard and I'm all for it. Other than that, he hasn't changed his look since it was already good from the start. I-No has such a good design in comparison to her older look. I kinda like the older one, but it screamed "I'm a powerful, but very slutty witch," which she's never been described as a slut. One of her old victory poses had her take off her jacket while facing away from the camera and she doesn't have anything underneath. She still has that victory pose in Strive, but now she had a crop-top on and stylish glasses. She's still sexy, but now it feels like her design is more realistic and much more stylish without feeling like it's pure horny bait. Slayer has probably gotten the best upgrade in design out of all of the returning characters in Strive and it was only one change! They gave him a trench coat that acts like a vampiric cape and it just slaps! If I wasn't straight, I would put Slayer as my husbando! Also, Slayer is the most chill and coolest vampire in fiction and I'm all for it!

Correct me if I'm wrong Johnny lore buffs, because I am in NO WAY a lore buff for Guilty Gear, I just skim the wiki when I'm interested in something- But I believe Johnny isn't quite portrayed as a "Player" or a "Heartbreaker" or anything like that, I think he just appreciates women to the MAX. He's also the captain of an all-women (and Johnny) pirate crew, and I've seen him described as a Robin Hood type of character in terms of deeds.
