YES! The PHASE switch. Brilliant tip and one I haven't seen in any other tutorials. I learned this lesson quite by accident when recording an announcer I worked with regularly. One day he complained that the headphones made him sound like he had a head cold. I checked the settings and equipment. Everything was dialed in normally, the processing, the mic, the room, the cans, everything was the same, EXCEPT the phase switch had somehow gotten toggled. As the engineer, he sounded the same to me regardless of the phase, but even a half cycle can befuddle the brain when the sound returns to the vocal performer's ears. A few times (over many decades) I purposely flipped the phase and the voice talent felt it sounded better in their head, but very rarely. Perhaps they had colds at the time? Another video full of great advise. Thanks.

Just setting up a home studio for the first time and I'm unable to hear my audio tracks (in Logic PRoX) through my monitor headphones, only through monitors/speakers. I have the phones plugged into my apogee quartet. I can hear the white noise in the phones but no music/sound. When I switch back from phones to speaker option on the quartet, nothing comes through the phones, it just stays playing through the speakers. Any suggestions would be helpful! Thank you!

Still a lesson in discerning what's useful. in regards to the water make sure its room temperature cold water isn't beneficial to the voice. It's something my music teacher taught me and I even gave that advice to another singer at a talent show.

You recommend having nothing behind the microphone when recording vocals... Does that mean I should not be using a reflection filter, such as an (sE Electronics Space) for rooms that are not treated, like a home bedroom? You also mention a 'phase switch'.. where can I find this please and how does it work? Thanks! Nick.

@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Actually, the TLM 102 is not known for being a bright sounding mic. Make sure to leave enough headroom when recording! It is a bit difficult for us to distinguish the flaw in your signal chain from a distance, we're afraid! However, do get back to us if the issue keeps occurring after you've checked your headroom!

Great content! There's a lot of crucial information and it's great to review things with a different approach! And I just need to ask: I watched this video yesterday and today I kept my mind all day thinking what's the consequence to leave the pop shield parallel to the microphone capsule? Ps.: I own a TLM103 and it was a game changer in my homestudio! Greetings from Brazil ✌
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Gustavo! Positioning the pop shield parallel to the capsule may cause sound reflections in the upper frequencies which in turn cause comb filter effects. As a result, sibilants often appear somewhat artificial. Depending on the pop shield material and its distance to the mic, this may or may not be audible. So, to be safe, it's a good idea to minimize such effects by angleing the pop shield.

Noticed a change with the flipped mic. Just me? I prefer this method as any moisture getting thru the pop does not get onto the mic body. I also prefer to slightly angle the flipped mic bottom away from the voice. Just a slight angle and keep the pop vertical. But what do I know. My studio is in a basement.
