Heraldo Desecho is my spirit animal. I loved the profound stillness of the opening and the flutter of wild thoughts and observations throughout the video. Do more of this, more more more-- or don't. We love whatever you do, you could do data entry for 40 minutes and we'd still watch. You've earned it.

Well done Gerald, this is spot on and a really great edit. It’s so rare to have someone being so genuine on camera with their words and being themselves whilst doing it. Too many put on a “KZbin” persona whilst talking to camera, when all they should be doing is be themselves. When it feels real, when it feels genuine, when you cut through the artifice you connect with your audience. It’s that connection that makes people feel like they know you, it makes people think of you as a friend, it makes you want to listen to what they have to say instead of moving to the next video. Of course this style isn’t for every video, part of the power of it is how unexpected it is. It’s the most un-Gerald Undone video you’ve made but it’s also ironically the video that is the most Gerald you’ve made. The Gerald that I know and am lucky to call my friend. Make the essential tech reviews, you enjoy them when when you enjoy the product. Do them for things that are special. For the rest? Well they can always be integrated more casually into different sorts of videos. When you enjoy making the videos that’s when we will enjoy them the most too. It’s important to get out of your comfort zone, but it’s just as important to come back into it. You will find that balance, I believe in you, and by doing so you will be much happier because of it. Remember, make videos because you want to, not just because you have to.

So on point! I'm totally down for this new Gerald era and I related to this so much also. I think it's so easy to get jaded in any job you have. The same routine can kill the human spirit and the joy for the process. Lately, I've also had the same feeling of getting stuck into the idea of having a perfect script for my tutorial content and also appealing the sponsor on time. I also have the fear that doing something different maybe won't work. But also the fear of doing the same thing all the time I think is definitely worse. The best things come from change. Thanks for inspiring me to also address this and join in on a more authentic future! You're awesome, Gerald. Remember that, I certainly look up to you and your view!

@@geraldundone Yeah D4Darious is right, but I know the feeling, working in community management (for 10 years now), and I think that this system of internet creation corner us into that mild depressive state that kind of chain us to our succes. I call it depression 2.0, very difficult to shake while still doing your job and being trapped in it can lead to a real burn out... You have to allow youself to experiment and be free and it will show. The video that illustrate that for is this one from Dave2d : kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHzbaoNne52jrdk Seeing him this happy makes me happy even if I don't care one bit about transformers and it's far from what he normally does. I really loved this Gerald. But the fact that I even used the word "enjoyed" speaks to what exactly the problem is. As creators, or those of us that do this for a living, we don't have KPIs or goals like someone with a traditional job. Our metrics are often rated in views, engagement, and likes. This pushes us to create the things that get the most of those things. This, is often, at the opposite end of where our creativity pushes us. Trying to appease the audience and our own creativity is tough and often results in the burnout we so often hear about. We often hide ourselves for fear that people will not like who we are, but instead the persona they see on the screen. I trust you will find that place.

Ok, bear with me...I unsubscribed from this channel early this year. And many of the others who I'd been with for years. Been with GU since pretty much the beginning. Not OG beginning. The reason being is the exact thing that is causing you dilemma (or was). I'm seeing innovative channels just turn into product whores. And it makes everything seem insincere. Even Curtis has gone this way. The reason I initially stayed with these channels is because there was always learning involved. And always different learning. I understood the situations, and would have likely done the exact same if I had a channel. Then this video kept popping up on suggestions. "Gerald's cool...let's see what he's on about...it's been a while". Wew! What an absolute gem of a video. What an absolute gem. So honest and sincere. You've realised you will kill your passion doing the same thing over and over and have recognised the path forward (to stop this). Personally, I'm behind that 100%. I've re-subscribed and, while I know there will still be reviews, I'm looking forward to what you do. Maybe some more learning, some reviews mid video, some fun, some daftness, some seriousness. Good luck, and I know that whatever you lose...you'll gain twice as much back, as a consequence.

I specifically don't let myself become beholden to just review content, because it's a never-ending grind and all of that work is fleeting the moment a new thing drops. My most memorable and helpful videos from you were not reviews, and the same is true of many channels. 9:00 - Been struggling with that for a few years. I sometimes stop to think that it used to be a joy to create a video and i felt that, at some point, i could talk about anything that interested me and form a community of people that shares teh same interests. But nowadays it got so robotic, the videos need to be in specific ways to please an invisible algorithm and it needs to keep being more of the same over and over and over and if you dare to try something different, then you don't even have a chance of knowing if it will work because it won't even reach people. Don't get me wrong, i love KZbin for enabling me to do a full time job around games, wich i love, but i struggle more and more and more because those days where you could be yourself and do different stuff are kinda gone. And now what remains is this constant struggle within myself, being tired all the time, doubting everything i do and every new idea i have because i know that it doesn't matter. At the same time, it's my full time job, i have a wife, a 1 year old baby, and 8 years dedicated to this. I feel kinda lost and this video relates so much.

Yessssssss. Thank you for this. It's nice hearing this from someone who is in a similar position. I don't know anyone personally who does this, so it feels good to hear your experience and happy you got it up in time! I'm literally in the same position and it's the 28th!!

This video is so very relatable as a KZbinr who struggles with deadlines (we got into this not to have deadlines ha) and as someone who doesn’t want to be doing to same thing year after year. We’ve been lucky that the pandemic has pushed us to pivot in unexpected ways and so far our audience has been loving those changes, but taking those chances are scary and tough. The good news is that you get real time feedback and are not creating or committing to a season of television before someone sees your content. I am in no place to give you advice but if I were you I Would try new things and experiment, see what works and what connects. At the same time maybe still cover the things that excite you in the in-depth way you love and people expect, but have that be the event episodes, not the norm.

So refreshing! Thanks for the honesty. It gives other creators confidence to not conform to a certain style or framework. ‘Never do this on KZbin! Always use these for KZbin! You’re not shooting in ____ for KZbin! Your export settings need to be this…’ and so on. You have a wealth of experience and whatever styles your videos take from now on, I’m sure you can educate, empower and be of interest to your audience and future subscribers. Don’t forget, we’re mainly watching you, because you’re watchable, not just because we’ve an interest in the product you’re reviewing. I hope this video sparks a trend for other leading KZbinrs to post some content that has this same level of humility. Being raw is being real. Sure, it’s ok to keep that private and not create a video of it, but posting it can be freeing and support the idea that there are other ways. Good luck man

Absolutely love this side of you!! This is all def something I think about on the constant, so thank you for posting this. I was debating a thousand times about making a second channel just because certain videos wouldn't really fit the "filmmaking" or "tech review" niche. Then I over think and feel like I'm quitting or letting people down. Slowly, I've been learning to open up a lot more with my content and I'm happy to see you in your raw element too. Just feels like we are hanging out. I'm here to support your change whatever direction you decide to go with. The real ones are here for you as a person. just remember.

Hey Gerald! Long time viewer, first time commenter here. Really enjoyed this video! I know we're both doing very different things on KZbin but I absolutely relate to that feeling like you can't experiment once you've found your thing. Just wanted to say I really enjoy what you do and I look forward to whatever you put out, whether it's the "old" format or something new!

"I'm struggling with that". That's what I say often. I'm sure many of us can totally relate.

I once made an 8-bit style video just to see if I could, and it ended up being covered by news outlets and getting me a lot of (relative) attention. For the next few years I continued making them, but the fear and pressure mounted with each new video. Not only did I feel trapped by the (very time consuming) style, but I became very depressed if one of them didn't match the view counts of an earlier video. I remember being so scared to deviate from that style, almost like I'd be betraying my small number of subscribers.

I started my channel 1 year ago and this shit is tough man so I loved seeing this REAL video of someone owning their struggles. Preparing to "perform" as you put it, always creates some sort anxiety in me and I've come to just accept that. Thanks for an honest video! Looking forward to videos about helping others, I love that idea man! There are no rules to this, do whatever YOU want because ultimately that's why people have subscribed to you, for THE Gerald Undone 😀👍

Totally agree. If you lose momentum it feels like failure. If you do what works, it feels like creative failure

You could certainly delete "Tech" from the title. This is the KZbin experience for all creators at some point. Love the raw take and also what you provide for so many creators 💪

Absolutely loved this. Every second of it. For one, I'm happy you made it for you. I understand what you're going through, but on a much smaller scale. The "show" can go on for however long you want it to. The show can be there and another thing can live along side it in paralell. You ultimately decide. Who's to say that the other thing you want to try - doesn't obliterate what you're done before - in performance, money, fulfillment etc. Life is way too short, taking chances is scary, but that's what makes it worth trying in the first place.

Great video Gerald! It’s nice to see a video about the real side. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows and your perspective gives a great insight for someone wanting to start thinking it will be the most exciting thing ever. As with any role, it can get tiresome. I’m a CEO, a KZbinr, sometimes do some speaking and I can tell you I’ve felt the same at times! (Actually been jealous of people with 9-5’s so they can switch off at the weekend!)

Great video Gerald, this is very much like being a musician and hitting a creative plateau on your instrument. For those of us with smaller channels, the struggle to evolve is the motivation to keep going but, larger channels like yours have an inherent expectation of content/quality that I can only imagine is overwhelming at times. From a musical perspective, the solution to that burnout that looks like it's just over the horizon, is discovery. Discovering new artists and new ways of playing or soloing opens what first looked to be a pretty narrow field of view. Musically speaking, being around other creators and players and experiencing their creative process or result can often inspire new directions. Nothing kicks your ass creatively like hearing new music or seeing an amazing new film filled with choices you would never make ordinarily.

I feel like this was a GREAT peek inside EVERY KZbinr's (especially those of us who've been on the platform for a hot minute) brain and thought process. We started these channels and continue to run them because we are creative and inspired and #allthethings but then we get trapped in this "I have to do it this way or I won't be successful" thing and it's just not true. I've had several conversations on my channel this year about switching things up and doing things differently and it's scary and exciting and weird because old dog, new tricks and all of that. Anyway, people FIND you because of your content but people STAY because of YOU so just keep being YOU and they'll be here regardless.

Gerald, I'm not able to say the same as others commenting on this video that I've experienced what you have or feel the same way. I'm new to this and therefore have no insight. I do however know that it takes a lot of courage to talk this way. Being open, vulnerable. This is so important for people to communicate how they feel and I just want to give you props and to thank you for being genuine. I appreciate your tech reviews but I think you being you is the best for your followers. Keep it up and do what's best for YOU!

Why not make a weekly or monthly series of "Randoms". It could be anything from vlogs and studio tours to informal reviews and BTS... Or anything that inspires you at the moment. It would be a great way to break the patterns and experiment new styles and formats and you'd also get to gauge how your audience receives them. Personally, I'd watch those experiments. I have a much smaller channel and been dealing with the same dilemma.

I really needed this conversation…validation…whatever that was. I know you made it for yourself (and Storyblocks) but you can tell from the comments that you inadvertently made this for so many others as well. Also, HUGE shoutout to Storyblocks for signing off on this video. That speaks volumes and I will continue to give them my money.

You totally nailed it. KZbin is a love/hate relationship. I think once in a while it's good to break out of the persona and do another kind of video. Maybe it works well, maybe not as much, but it helps to keep exploring new things and it is refreshing! Good luck!

Gerald, this is pure gold!!! 👌👌. I’m in the same point that you, with only 3x videos!!!. It’s very hard to try to explain this to someone that not know YT from inside. Love this type of content, make that whatever you want and I’ll be here to see it. A huge!
