I’m not sure I can compare the effectiveness of any review of any kind of product I’ve ever seen to Gerald here. This is mind blowing how he can not only test these very specific tools to their utmost far limits and yet compress and deliver the analysis in such a concise and understandable package. A++ As a note, I am a professional photographer that does almost zero video for work. These cameras were not marketed to me. I don’t need anything new, I’m happy with my DSLR, however I do feel Canon marketing and product highlights in these cameras are very confusing. How can they on one hand, deliver 99% of what people hated about the R yet shoot themselves in the foot by offering features that are somewhat unusable? That’s not typically their MO, I have always looked to canon for their reliability and durability. They should stop trying to be something they are not.

So here's the thing. I find myself in a world of videographers and "KZbinrs" (not you Gerald) that have gotten so video focused it feels like it's almost ruining photography products because the camera companies are trying to appease both sides. Or appease more heavily towards the KZbinr. There are very few people who are clearly talking about just the photography side of things with these new products. It truly seems odd to me to buy a handheld camera to shoot production videos but that's not what I do for a living. I absolutely love the breakdown you have given to both sides equally and were so thorough. Your level of intelligence is pretty amazing when it comes to the ins and outs of some of these crazy specs and technical intricacies. You are very correct in saying that the marketing is terrible. I almost feel like I shouldn't buy these cameras for landscape photography because they are marketing in such a poor way. These companies are almost forgetting about the people who want to buy these cameras because they are fun to shoot with and take amazing photos. Thanks for the awesome review.
@patrickchase56144 жыл бұрын
Very nice overview. A few thoughts now that I have my R5: 1. Absolutely spot-on about marketing. This is not a video workhorse, and asking people like Johnnie Behiri (or you) to evaluate it as such was suicidal 2. The fact that the camera's recovery times aren't improved by cooling/heatsinking/etc suggests that their thermal-management firmware isn't very well optimized, or that they prioritized predictability (giving the same recovery time and time-to-shutdown every time) over allowing maximum usage. Hopefully they'll fix that or at least provide an alternative mode that allows you to run the camera closer to its true limits. 3. When you look at video DR using static compositions of a Xila chart, what you measuring in large part is the aggressiveness and quality of temporal denoising. Plenty of the DR measurements I've seen using this method have been physically impossible within a single exposure (i.e. there are not enough electrons per pixel to provide the stated DR without averaging across multiple frames) so it's clear that noise reduction is in play. BTW that also explains why C5D has consistently seen lower "DR" for raw modes than for in-camera ones using the same methodology. The NR is different and often less aggressive in a raw workflow. 4. The 6R isn't the only Canon body that can shoot 4K60 without overheating. The 1Dx3 can do that, though without AF in its oversampled full-frame mode. 5. I slapped on my trusty Sigma 18-35 and tried out the crop modes (which are automatically enabled with that lens) and they are quite good. 6. Photographic performance and handling are mind-blowing IMO.

I bought the X-T4 today and ran a similar runtime test. These were the results: 4K 60fps at 200 Mbps recorded for 42 mins then shutdown with temp warning. I restarted the recording immediately after the record limit twice. 4K 24fps at 400 Mbps - filled up the 128gb with no overheating. Restarted the recording after time limits. No overheating in any of the 1080p modes. One more thing, the new battery lasted for 42 mins of 4K 60fps and 36 mins 4K 24 fps in total continuously. The camera was in boost mode with the IBIS enabled. I also ran my XT3 at the same time and noted it was consistently less warm than the XT4. Power consumption wise I used 5 batteries on the XT3 vs 2 batteries on the XT4.

So there are two possible explanations for Canons heat recovery times: 1. Canon has placed a software limitation on the recovery time to lower the operating time following a heat warning. 2. Canon has created a space time barrier surrounding the camera that prevents heat energy from leaving the dimensional planes in which the camera exists. Maybe it’s a mixture of the two.
@jaysanchez44074 жыл бұрын
All electronics have a central processing unit that is designed to protect itself from extreme heat
@NoTicket4 жыл бұрын
Jay Sanchez hey Jay, yes I know. I agree with you on that. The problem is that the laws of physics are being defied through some mechanism which prevents cooling the camera externally with any real benefit. This camera seems to have the thermal characteristics of a Yeti cooler, rather than a 750g camera with how well it retains heat and resists cooling. Many have reported already that when the video “overheated” the camera is cool to the touch, and the fact that leaving the camera fully open, placing ice packs on it, make no difference means something weird is going on.

Maybe they insulated the camera so well from the outside heat that as a downside the heat inside is difficult to dissipate. Tony N. said that according to it’s test the overheating time doesn’t change so much when the camera is exposed to sunlight, meaning that probably is very sealed against heat.

Excellent but a concern that this wasn’t apparent to everyone who had this camera in hand at the launch. Armando’s adventures in narrative drama seemed ridiculous from the start. Why???Beautifully summed up but this conclusion was surely never in doubt. It may be stating the bleeding obvious but it’s truly reassuring that you have done so so clearly where others seemed to have not. I would take issue that the alternative cinema option is the c300 or 500 as these surely are another league of camera and use case. Thanks again for your time and care.
@AdrianBacon4 жыл бұрын
Also, I wish canon would realize that they could make most of the heat issues go away if they simply give us the option to record video without the camera rescaling it. So, for the R6, give us the option to just record 5.1K video in h.264/265. Don’t scale it down to 4K in the camera. On the R5, give us the option to record 1:1 pixel readout and let us choose the window capture size starting at 2K and going up from there, then either record that as raw or h.264/265 without rescaling it in camera. That way you can record ~5.1K super35 with the option to incrementally record higher video resolutions up to 8K, with the trade off of lower record times as you add resolution.

And I don't even mean overheating. There are way too many little problems with video mode, very few options too. The Sony has the software and option availability ready for us videographers. @@michaelbell75 I personally do not care one iota about resolving power of lenses. I shoot music videos and narrative films, so relative softness is what I'm actually after. It would save me from using a softening filter on set. That's why the bulk of my shoots is with vintage lenses anyway. From the modern lenses, when I need them for run & gun, I only care about AF/aperture speed and IS. If they have to sacrifice quality to get me those, I'm very much good with it. Resolving power is more important in photography, or corporate/product videography. I don't take such jobs.

Ninja V for b-cam interviews (no different than what I'm doing with my current EOS R), but also the ability to grab some specialty shots in raw (care very little about the 8K, just the fact that it's raw video) to pair with the raw from the C200. I suspect a lot of the presales are from owner/operators of cameras from the cinema lineup. These types of hybrid cameras, in general, don't really work for me as A cameras, and never have. I'm probably going to rent the R5 and see how I like it, but ultimately wait to see if they release any rumored R-mount cinema cameras. Those might end up being a better fit.

hi mate, thanks again for another deep dive. it is this attention to detail and getting granular on a subject that has made you the premier go to channel for camera info. anyway, could you make a chart of your preferred video settings on the R5 with a short brief on best use scenarios? cheers. zane

I don't see how you could do this without a teleprompter, but your delivery and eye movement doesn't seem like a teleprompter. Either way... F*ing fantastic work you do! Cheers!

You know what's more impressive than a 8K camera that doesn't over heat? Gerald's ability to test, review, analyze and present tech.

@3:37. My R6 will overheat if recording externally with a Ninja in 4K25. That is in a 'hot' environment like +25c.

one of the annoyances with the r5 (besides the inflated price and overheating) is that it needs to be customized much more heavily than a dslr to be enjoyable to use. If the body was alittle bigger it would allow an improved button layout. im still puzzled by the lack of a mechanical mode dial, no other camera company has removed it on their high end cameras. the electronic mode dial is a PITA to press - its just as bad as the touchbar imo. also BBAF feels a bit awkward due to the recessed feel of the AF on button, the info, Q and zoom buttons are a bit small and cramped, and the rotary dial feel too minaturised (make sure you trim your fingernails before shooting). There are too many buttons on the right side of the camera, it just doesn't "feel" right to me. The camera will definitely produce great results but I can't help but feel the usability has been compromised. It feels more like an expensive consumer level camera than a professional tool like the 5d4. Canon seems to be prioritizing aesthetics and compactness over function and usability, and somebody there is making really bad design decisions. Its seems like the team that designed the pro DSLR bodies (5d4, 1dx3) had zero input for the RF bodies. The extending zoom mechanism of the rf 70-200 2.8 is too cumbersome for shooting sports. I'm curious to see the body design of the R1, the rumoured professional level body. if they get that right it would give me hope that things could change in the future bodies.

Great review Gerald. I am a wedding filmaker. Imagine to get an overheat in the middle of the outdoor ceremony, you acting like you are filming the moment but the camera needs to cold down, she is delicate, no one knows the problem, everyone smiles at you, they don't know. You arrived home with stress, all your investment on the fkn 3.9999 body and 2.299 50 1.4 and you didn't get the moment, you can't pay rent that month because of the insane canon overpricing products, the heat in your body starts rising up too and then, you will need some time to cold down too before you call your clients to tell them about the problem. You lose part of the money, everyone talks about the cameraman that didn't récord the most important moment of their life, and your life ends up in a terrible overheat depresión post camera overheat. Your Psychiatrist recommends you to travel to Antarctica and stay there with the R5 for a while. Thinks AS7III will win the Battle in weddings and other áreas for sure, cheaper, so many good and cheap lenses, a great brand behind. I think for weddings R5 will not be the best 4k camera, for other things, photography will be an amazing option no doubt about it.

Over heating is a pita. All the sony a7 series has this issue on 4k, including filming outside this summer on my a7siii. Sad to see canon has this heat issue too. I've resorted to cooling packs around the chassis. Anyway dslrs have never been true workhorses, people just hallucinated them to be. The bmpcc 6k has treated me well for a video workhorse at a very fair price.

One thing that I haven't really seen talked about is how the APS-C crop mode for the R6 works. Is this a 1.6x crop that is then upscaled to 4k, resulting in low quality, or is it a 1:1 readout with 1.43x crop? If it's the 1.43x, do EF-S lenses even work for 4k recording on the R6, or is the vignetting terrible? In the manual it clarifies the 1.6x crop for stills in crop mode, but it doesn't specifically say for movie recording.

Great review! As a long exposure photographer, I'm a little bit concerned about the overheating issue. I have not seen anyone tlak about it yet (but I don't know if anyone tested it either..). Do you have any idea regarding that?

14:22 Which LUT from the Canon EOS R page should we use? There are tons of LUTs in the folder: 3d luts, 1d luts, 17 grid, 65 grid etc.

Because the First 8K sounds unique that it is easy for the marketers to brand a camera, but they may find it hard to highlight the uniqueness in photography to be distinguished from the current cameras in the market.

I know Canon M6 mark ii isn’t a high end camera like the EOS R, R5, R6, A7S3 and so on.. but have you ever tried it, tested it and maybe thought about making a video about it and it’s big brother, Canon 90D?
