Hey there I'm a new gerbil owner and I have two females they are litter mates and just a month off being weened.. anyways I was cleaning their cage and I put them in a box with their Food there in hideout and they were doing good running around normal then they just froze and were limp and unresponsive but it lasted only a minute but it was scary scary they have since returned to normal only another few seconds after I placed them in my hands to warm and calm ?? They moved and I put them back to rest in the hide in the fresh cage they are running around playing digging chewing eating drinking and so on their normal gerbil selves but what was that?!?? Freezing and being limp almost and not responding?!?! It's never happened before.. thank you if you see this your amazing and any knowledge you have would be so so much appreciated and either way hope your channel is successful.

I gave my gerbils to a young lady because it wasn't what I expected. I also got hay fever from the hay and bedding. Gerbils are great pets though. Contrary to hamsters or mice they are also active during the day time. When they hear something they will wake up and check it out. Sometimes they get scared about something but a few seconds later they have forgotten it and come and play. The big turn off for me was that you can't really let gerbils out of their enclosure, like hamsters or rabbits or guinea pics. My enclosure was huge and they didn't show any stereotypical behaviour but I still found it sad they had to spend their entire life in that cage. They also make a lot of mess
@rr7firefly Жыл бұрын
Make a big mess? Do you mean poop and pee all over? Oh, that would be good to know before getting gerbils.
@Renee1475 Жыл бұрын
I let mine run around in the bathtub and my daughter will let one run around in her room on the area rug. For the most part they like their enclosure because it has their scent and feel safe.

This is a great video. There is plenty of information out there about food or wheels, but not much information about behavior. It is a topic I would love to hear more about. Regarding your video, I would suggest placing the wheel upside-down and attached to the top of the cage. This way, the wheel will be above the bedding and the gerbils won't be able to move the wheel or hide it in the bedding. See this video I uploaded as an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5Smp5epiaySbKc

Hrm I've actually got a unique relationship between my gerbils then. Instead of one being the designated leader and doing the renovating AND lookout to see if its safe, I seem to have one renovator gerbil and the other is the lookout!

Oh I actually separated those roles! Sorry if it was unclear in the video. There’s always an architect that’s not necessarily the leader. Almond, our architect, is definitely not the leader 😅

@finsandwhiskers3 жыл бұрын
It could be that they don’t want to be held! They’re also trying to see what surface they are on, as their enclosure is the most familiar with the scent they know the most.

@PetConnectionInternational3 жыл бұрын
Can I ask, do you use any "passive taming" methods such as handfeeding and slow blinking/winking? These are a couple of things that can help to gradually build a sense of trust between you and your gerbil, and it can help with the "active" taming process. I explain both "passive" and "active" taming in a hand taming video on my channel if it helps 🙂 also if they continue biting when you're trying these new methods then it may be an idea to wear gardening gloves while training at the start until they learn not to bite your hand, we don't want lost fingers in the process! 😅

@PetConnectionInternational3 жыл бұрын
Don't worry too much about that, every gerbil is different, as long as you're showing them you bring good things by giving them treats like sunflower/pumpkin seeds and mealworms, then they should gradually get more used to you 🙂 I have two VERY different personalities in my gerbils, while one of them can come when called and is learning a bunch of tricks, the other one won't even fully stand on my hand for a treat before running away 😅
