I had been struggling with this concept bc others get far too technical and only serve to add confusion. 🙄 You have literally resolved an issue I’ve been trying to figure out for a couple of months with two simple rules (with some examples of when both will work)-nouns, use Kein, verbs and adjectives, use nicht! I am taking classes on Duolingo and Busuu. Duolingo provides no context to why things are the way they are. Busuu does a better job at times, but I can always rely on Anja to provide me with a great explanation and example. This was very helpful!!

I'm also doing lessons on Duo and it is maddeningly unhelpful when it comes to understanding the grammar. Like you, I found that it's most helpful when you do it in conjunction with other apps or other sources

Nicht is rather like "not" in English, and kein is more like "no." We do NOT have bananas, versus We have NO bananas. Or in your example, "I do NOT play piano," versus, "I play NO piano." Or "I do NOT speak German" versus "I speak NO German." Not is always related to the verb whereas no is related to the noun.
