I was stationed in San Diego from 1984-89 on USS Cape Cod AD 43 1984-86 and USS Kinkaid DD 965 1987-89. Met my wife at The Country Bumpkin in Imperial Beach. That ship had to sail through the North Sea, through the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean to get to the Pacific Ocean. Long voyage. Welcome to San Diego shipmates.

AFAIK it is going the other way round. It started in Spain, went to NYC, through panama and stops at San Diego before it goes to Hawaii and takes part in RIMPAC. Then it returns to germany

They should be addressed as Sailors not Soldiers. Lol. Happy to see they made the journey safely. From a retired US Navy Sailor.

My late father's family who served in the US Army was from Germany. They migrated in the 1900s. It's a thrill seeing a German Warship that is an ally to come to port. My relatives that served in the Navy from my mother's side would be awestruck.

After the Second World War, Germany no longer has a destroyer class in its navy, but it does have damn big frigates ^^
@Chiggi0815
@Chiggi0815 2 ай бұрын
We had destroyers, to directly escort convoys into the north sea. Ever since SM2 was developed you could cover the whole north sea with a single ship. Ships that are for direct escorting are called destroyers and ships that indipendently control an area are called frigates or cruisers. And the US even had nuclear powered frigates before 1975.

The West German navy had 4x home built Hamburg class destroyers and 3x US built Charles F. Adams class guided missile destroyers. And the F124s are considered to be destroyers in an operational sense, they’re called frigates for political reasons

I would usually be proud but this class is essentially useless in our navys Defence strategy. The first of the 4 vessels will already be retired by 2028-

Steel is cheap and big ships look imposing to politicians, armament isn't cheap.
@dopepopeurban6129
@dopepopeurban6129 2 ай бұрын
@@maoh1772 cost wasnt an issue here. These things are essentially build to fight pirates and to deliver supplies on humanitarian missions. Theyre built to be extremely versitile and modular but in doing so, they lack any non-mobile hardware. For some perspective, this 7.500t frigate (the largest in the world rn) doesnt feature any vls cells whatsoever. It features 8x NSM, 2 RAM launchers, a naval gun and 2x MLGs. They feature they same exact armamanets as germanys 1.850t corvettes.
@callsigndd9ls897
@callsigndd9ls897 2 ай бұрын
@@dopepopeurban6129 However, corvettes cannot accommodate a 75-man combat force (Navy Seals) including landing craft, 2 helicopters, ammunition and provisions for a longer period of deployment. That is what these ships were actually built for. Now the world situation is changing. I think these ships have to be adapted to the threat situation in order to meet today's requirements.
@dopepopeurban6129
@dopepopeurban6129 Ай бұрын
@@callsigndd9ls897 well yes and no. The F125 could theoretically deploy a unit of the Seebatallion but it’s not able to carry its ordered combat boats. The frigate carries its own 4 rigged hull speedboats, however those can only accommodate 7 soldiers and 1 driver at a time. Also the Seebataillon is not an insurgency force but a conventional amphibious one. 2x helicopters is the standard on any German frigate, both the F123s and F124s as well as the upcoming F126s and F127s feature 2 helicopters each (typically sealynx). It can carry provisions, it can’t carry large quantities of ammunition however and it’s not particularly long range/ long lasting either. The systems on board are extremely robust and durable over long periods of time but that only affects the maintenance aspect of those vessels. No, those ships are particularly designed towards anti piracy operations and humanitarian missions to a certain extent. It’s not like this is surfacing only now. The discussions surrounding this class have been ever present since when they were ordered in 2007. The navy originally only wanted 2 cuz of its extremely limited capabilities and high tonnage/ cost (to date it’s the largest frigate on earth). But this was 2007, times were the navy itself had very little say in what ships it actually got.

They're fine for what they are supposed to do (maritime stabilization) and even without VLS cells they still pack a rather impressive rapid fire 127mm gun with guided munitions and 100+ km range. I also suspect that with current developments, they will be kept around longer even after their successors (F126 class) are commissioned. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense that they were scheduled for a somewhat costly electronics overhaul, fire control upgrade plus new naval radars just last month -- done by Saab, expected to cost about EUR 400 million.
