We Dutch are not ashamed of black-iets actually. There are just a small groups of people that make issue out of it that don't understand what it came from. In fact it's actually not Dutch. It's Spanish, but I guess the Spanish also had great influence on us.

Wrong there, you can see where this is racist, and actually be.. a dutch person. You know being respectful and tolerant of other people. You can know the original meaning (which we all know, wasn't meant as a racist thing), yet accept that nowadays, it's quite ok to change it a bit to fit our current society- again- if you do not want that, you are basically the Dutch hating person. Please come back to me with all you know, flawed arguments and fallacies. I'm sure I wont be dissapointed.

Yeah no. I used to get angry when people tried to change Zwarte Piet, because I was blinded by 'tradition' and used to defend it. However I have since opened my eyes and realised it is in fact very racist. I hope our country can change, because we should be ashamed of it.

@@calvinhoek9412 Yeah which is the reason I believed in it first. However if that's the case why are their clothes completely clean? It's just their skin that gets painted black. They also have afros, red lips (which would also be black if they went through the chimney that much) and have large earrings. Those characteristics are unnecessary. The chimney reason is just a poor excuse to try an justify only painting the skin black.

Sinterklaas comes from Spain in your folklore, but we in Spain dont celebrate that. We used to paint black the guy that plays Baltasar (one of the Three Wise Men) in our Christmas tradition, but nowadays you can find naturally black people (due to immigration) to fill that role.

Manhattan Island was New Amsterdam, the biggest city of New Netherland, a Dutch colony, which included land that's now New York City, parts of New York State, and parts of the surrounding states. New Netherland was started by the Dutch West India Company in the 1600s and lasted for fifty years until the British seized it in a battle. It then became a British Colony, and the names were changed to name it after York in England. Some of my British American ancestors lived in the early colony of New York City on Manhattan Island at that time and stayed and eventually fought in the American Revolution on the American side in 1776. I heard that I might have a Dutch colonist ancestor from New Amsterdam who married one of my British colonist ancestors in Manhattan, but I need to research that.

Before it was called New Amsterdam it was called New Sweden,it was part of an atempt by the Swedish Empire ti establish a colonial empire in the new world. The Swedes bought some land off the Dutch and founded some settlements downstream from the Dutch settlements, they lasted from 1638 until 1653 or 1655 i think when the Swedish settlements got captured by the Dutch after an unsuccessful war (forntge Swedes) between the settlements and the Swedish settlements didn't get much support from the Swedish Government at the time (with new settlers and provisions, criminals could be sentenced to deportation to the colonies, like the British did with Australia, in an attempt to bolster the population of the colonies) because they focused more on trying to make the Baltic Sea a Swedish inland ocean (like the Mediterranean Sea was for the Roman Empire). Those plans were called Dominum Maris Balticii. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪

Not to mention that the ones who spread this stereotype (that France "always surrenders") seem to me to be the british, who in WW1 the won because of the help of the french and the americans, and in WW2 they were removed by continental Europe completely, and were only saved because they were protected by the sea. But don't worry, I don't believe that anyone believes that "France surrenders". Perhaps some british 80 year olds who believe the UK won WW2 😂

Naaa most Dutch people aren't ashamed for "zwarte Piet" (black face). Only some people whom have little going on in their lives, feel disturbed by silly things and thinks the whole country needs to adjust to that! Zwarte Piet comes once a year, it is an old tradition, and if you've been a good boy or girl he would bring presents! I never ever noticed he was black, never. "Adults" do. Making it about the dude being black is racist in my opinion .. I always thought of him as a human .. the helper/right hand man of 'Sinterklaas' .. nothing more, nothing less. Let kids be kids, don't make it into something what it is not, never was. The tale is to "teach children" a "lesson" .. a bit like Santa Claus and fairytales which and are written for that reason. Who nags about fairytales ? Oh wait .. some do .. about how sleeping beauty is kissed and by whom ?? 🙄🤭 Anyways .. the meme video you watched wasn't tó great! Sorry .. I am Dutch but didn't get most of the memes. Please do keep intrest in us though! Nice ☺ But Germans and Dutch folk don't differ that much ..
