I had a male German shepherd, about 100lbs. He once escorted a neighbors 12 year old boy to our back door, when the boy had jumped our back yard fence to get his ball. Bruno would not let the boy go back over the fence and brought him to us. Glad my dog had enough sense not to hurt him, because he did kill a small dog that came in our yard once, and other small animals. That's Bruno for ya...Smart dog! lived to 13 years. I say he was a 11 out of 10, great dog...

I've shared my life with German Shepherd Dogs for almost 50 years. Have trained (SAR) and bred them for some of those years. Several being donated to law enforcement agencies. Hands down the BEST breed of dog EVER! I never want to live without at least one of these dogs, being right next to me.

I have had many many German Shepherd Dogs over the past 20 years. German Shepherd’s are so easy to train they seem to pick up on things the first time with out a problem. They also seem very very eager to please their humans and it puts a smile on their faces. My vote is for the German Shepherd

I've had both and I'd say it's a tie. They are a little different, but both are excellent. It depends what your looking for. Those two are two of my 3 favorite dogs I've had. Throw in my wolf hybrid and you'll have a house no one will bother. A food bill that will put you in the poor house. And dog hair everywhere. But you'll be safe!!!

I have had both breeds. The GSD was great when I was raising my family and had kids to keep him busy. Now that I'm retired, my Rottie is my constant companion and housemate. It just depends on your lifestyle. I love both breeds, but in my retirement, I couldn't handle the energy of a GSD. Both love their families and can be protective when the need arises. Great dogs!

@@Deborah_de_Peppy Don't get me wrong, my Rottie girl is nearly 8 years old and she can still get the zoomies! That's when my grandkids come over and play with her. She gets me out of the house on walks daily, about 5 to 10 minutes 4 or 5 times a day. The rest of the time, she is napping at my feet or on the couch. And she lets me know loudly when she wants to go out! She is a drama queen and moans and cries and grumbles until she gets her way (walks, dinner, treats, attention). That's why I named her Ingrid Bergman! Oh, and she sheds year round too!

I was raised with German Shepherds, we had them tell I was in my mid 20's. 31 years ago I got my first Rottweiler I can agree with some of these points, but I do believe the Rotti got the short end of the stick on this. I love both breeds, but if I had to choose one over the other, I would take the Rotti. To me there's nothing like the love of a Rottweiler.

I have had a rottie , a German shep, and a pit bull German shep hybrid. The thing to understand about a rotti vs a gsp that is the most important is that the gsp pretty much always obeys you. The rottie knows what you asked it to do, but may decide that is not what he wants, and ignore you . To me it was much easier to train both the pit bul, and the gsp then the rottie, they are the most stubborn and dominant dog i have ever had, and they are only for strong willed and experienced owners in my opinion. But germans are noisy, they bark A LOT and are also very vocal, and they can also escape the most secure yards if they want too. Roties are fine just chilling on the couch, as long as they get to play for an hour or two a day, they just lounge around, and are much more calm.

Fur is a fact of life with a dog, unless you get a poodle or such, that has to be groomed every 6 weeks! Love the dog, love the fur too!

I have a 2 year old GSD he weighs 105lbs now. I grew up with spaniels and had one in my adult life too. After going through a divorce and leaving my Spaniel with my ex wife (it was best for him at the time) I decided to get a GSD because I wanted something very different to my beloved spaniel. A dog that wouldn’t remind me of him… I have to say, he’s been such an amazing dog. He’s my best friend. I’ve never known loyalty like it. He never leaves my side and we both look after each other. I couldn’t be without my Lenny.

A rotty showed up at my place once and I couldn’t make her go. She was very affectionate and protective of me although I was basically a stranger. I named her Roxy (she seemed to like it). I took her on a 4.5 mile run and almost killed her (she did well for 2 miles). She was reunited with her owner (whom I suspect “put her out; but the kids really missed her). I would rather have the Rotty than the Sheperd. Every Shepherd I’ve known seems to like to kill goats for no reason.

I’ve had both except the German shepherd was not pure he was 50/50 German shepherd and husky. Most protective dog I’ve ever seen in my life. Loyal to the family didn’t like strangers. My Rot put on the act if someone was at the door, if you didn’t know her you wouldn’t walk in but she would probably literally lick you to death, she loved all people and loved being pet and getting attention. Those two dogs were the best two dogs I’ve ever known. I also had a lab collie mix that was a cool dog. I love dogs period. Dogs are honest. It’s you people that I can’t stand .

I’m a huge fan of both breeds. I have a 9 year old GSD who is awesome. I find it funny destructive is constantly mentioned because mine is opposite. And he’s been around several other animals from kittens to pigs and no issues. He will chase the cats outside but has never harmed them. Just has fun chasing them. But my absolute favorite dog was mixed. German Shepard and Rottweiler. Sweetest gentlest dog ever.

They are very self-assured and have a very high threshold for aggression, much higher than German Shepherds, for example. But what is very important is that the guide radiates a natural security, this is absolutely important when dealing with the dogs. Violence against Rottweilers should be avoided at all costs as the dogs may turn against the tormentors. If an insecure person approaches such a dog, misfortune is inevitable. Rottweilers are loyal and fiercely protective of their human and home. If the dog respects its handler, they are easy to handle and very obedient.

Our Rotty female is 135 lb. solid and cut. She is the friendliest dog I have ever had. She gets so excited when she meets new people. She is very loyal to me, she listens fairly well. Sometimes she is stubborn. She loves to be with us. Warning, they need to be kept busy. She does training twice a week and we keep her busy outside playing and working. Overall great dog.

I have both….the gsd is more up with activity. Always looks to me for direction and also gets into more trouble…. Off leash obedience came completely natural, and very obedient, even as a puppy.. he does not care for the existence of other humans that are not in my family and he does not know he likes his circle small. No Protection training however, I have an idiot friend that tried to scare us while I was walking him at night, and my German Shepherd went straight for him. Teeth out and all. To this day that’s the only time that he’s gotten close to actually hurting somebody. Rottweiler, on the other hand is definitely the sweeter dog. Friendlier to strangers than my German Shepherd also very good off leash, but not quite as good as my German Shepherd. Nevertheless, I can walk both of them off, lead together without an issue. Obedient when it’s convenient lol. as far as protection, the rotty looks the part more, but the German Shepherd acts the part more

i have owned german shepard dogs for 55 years. i have no complaints. never have they been destructive in my home, never. know i am safe living alone. Extremely obedient, and are not obsessed with food. They dont slobber, or leave a water mess around the drinking bowl. Nope strangers cant sway them with treats. They are the most majestic beautiful dogs to look at and they don't stink.

A German shepherd dog can play in a ice bound beach in Canada for hours and never get wet more than the outer coat. My king shepherd plays in the surf everday and this mornings ice bound beach did not slow him down. 100 lbs 12 months old. LOVE HIM SO MUCH. He is water proof and the daily swim beach ball fetch time keeps him from shedding in the house.

GSDs usually have 3 beautiful blended colors on their fur and the ones with hazel eyes are even more beautiful. Most rottys look the same while most German shepherds have their unique pattern of fur. They're both wonderful breeds, but I would rate the intelligence of the Rottweiler much higher and the Border Collie lower. Most of a Collie's trainability is to do with its inherent instinct to herd/hunt, whereas a Rottweiler looks to you to teach what is expected.

Shepherds are a great breed, I have a few, but the German shepherds breed was truly harmed bully the police work and attention that brought just like the Belgium now. They created more of a curved hip for the spring jump. The breed has made a rebound, but not that much. The rottie same was messed up by the attention they received bad breeding. But also is returning, I have breed rotties for my family and self, for many years I have 6 now. I no longer breed them, but they are a wonderful breed. If you’re referring to the downward slant of their backs that has absolutely nothing to do with them being police dogs. That would be the show dog line that created that. The working class gsds do not have that nor would they ever have that. The akc claims they were bred like that for power but it was just for aesthetics.

I want a free roty. I have the land house and kids hence why im to broke to buy one. I had a roty mix who decided to leave the yard one day and go for a walk and never made it back home. Happened about three days ago. We are so heartbroken.

My brother had a male Shepard and a female Rottweiler, both Police department rejects where he worked. Both gun shy. He Shepherd treated the Rottweiler as if she was his baby. It was the sweetest relationship. Both great dogs. In my opinion the Shepherd was smarter, but I'm biased. I raised Shepherds. I did love his Rottweiler. I'm a dog lover.

I agree with every ranking except that Rotties prefer warm weather. With their double coat, they really do prefer colder weather !

I still love the Rottweiler more ! Had one from 3 mos until her demise. . .she was 11 yrs old. . .house trained by the time she was 6 mos old & the smartest fog I've seen !! 120 lbs pure muscle ! & guarded me & my family with her life ! RIP Onyx ❤❤❤

My brother owns a gsd and u have had rotties my whole life. I do disagree with some of this but I'm a bit partial. It does take persistent training with both breeds. But both are good dogs. But I'm team rottie all day

The German Shepherd wasn't bred for herding , but as a "service dog" ! The term "Shepherd" was a great marketing idea at this time!

That is not true, they were bread for herding but us Americans turn them into service, dogs and police dogs and show dogs, but they were first bred as a sheep herder

@@clove3243 Max von Stephanitz did breed them to be service/protection dogs! That's why they have such a huge prey drive! And the original working dog lines of the german "shepard" are much more service and protection dog , than your american "show dog" , and "family dog" crap!! It is your fault (ignorance) , when your personal belief system is not in accordance with real facts and data!!
