1999 was one of the greatest years only in German and English music, with a whole hour dedicated to it, surprisingly there was loads of dance and techno dominating the charts, with newcomer Britney Spears having the most charted entries in Germany with four from the …Baby One More Time album as the title track did eventually top the chart everywhere. With MOR veterans Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Cliff Richard and incredibly Cher. Also Prince’s ‘1999’ finally entered the chart this year only if in Germany when it was available to buy through CD single and it was the first video to be shown on the MTV Germany service via the Astra satellite replacing VH1’s feed at midnight on New Year’s Day 1999 at 00.01. Well the year did eventually end with him with “The Greatest Romance Ever Sold” in late December. As more of the Spice Girl soloists started to come into the charts, with R&B, Rap, Hip-Hop, and Boyband stuff, Billie Piper and Steps made their only German debut as part of the ABBA tribute single and Jimi Jameson’s “I’m Already Here” from 1988 entered the German charts in the lower end this year, with some of the singles that did appear which would enter the British charts in 2000 such as Andreas Johnson, Lene Marlin, and York’s remix of Chris Rea’s ‘On the Beach’ and Travis made their first German chart appearance (already months late) after they had their big success in the U.K. with The Man Who album. Technically pointing out there was five Christmas songs, two of them which were New Year themed which was ABBA’s 1980 hit “Happy New Year” from the Super Trouper album and notably Europe’s 1986 hit of “The Final Countdown” remixed in time for the new millennium plus Cliff’s take on Auld Lang Syne. Hopefully we do enter the 2000s for the German charts and the 21st century itself into the next chapter.

@@shakz86 I don't listen to current music unless it's being forced on me and it sounds awful. But the 90s had way too many bad songs too especially in the late 90s. I can't get over the fact how songs like Barbie Girl or that damn puppet Mr Oizo were on top of the charts. I really got headaches then lol

Thank you Francis for another fantastic German chart video! The most underrated songs from that year IMO are 'How Will I Know' and 'I Do' by Jessica Folcker, 'Se una regola cè' by Nek, 'Strangers Like Me' by Phil Collins and 'La Tribu de Dana' by Manau (the latter was a massive hit in France though). Keep up the great work! 👍

Hey man, just wanna say you rock! I didn't want to watch the whole thing but I just did! What a load of nostalgia! I'm gonna make me a big fat 1999 playlist. I grew up with this music. Yeah, a lot of it was just one hit wonder copy cat crap but there were tons of great tunes. To may to name. I wrote all I probably could like down and it was way over hundred! It was 18x10=180 songs, just subtract the ones that I have to relist or even didn't know and there will be a top 100! Keep on uploading these videos. ❤ And in case you are from French. Merci beaucoup pour ton travail et bonne chance pour ta vie. 🤗

Again very divers, but a little bit too much of R'nB and Hip Hop for me. But the comeback of Blondie and the debut of Britney. And I liked the Britpop like Travis. The dance music in the first half was a little step backwards although I loved the innovative songs like Beatbox Rocker, New World Order and Right here right now. Mambo sway so low and I still can't stop dancing when I here the song...

It's what most people who cared for commercial music liked, so blame them. 🤪 To me it is funny that Coldplay have inifite listeners on spotify, Travis has only 2.5 million listeners, while Keane has whopping 15.7 million monthly listners! 😲I knew them from the beginning but in Germany they weren't really popular I think. But they are huge despite the fact that their best works have been many years ago. Fun fact: "Mr. X & Mr. Y is a music project consisting of the two DJs WestBam and Afrika Islam". WestBam did quality EDM music that sounded nothing like the Eurodance or Vocal Dance etc. stuff that was popular at that time. He was the founder of the Mayday, consider that kind of music as more grown up than this "cheesy happy" Eurodance stuff. "Right Here Right Now" is a massive tune, super addictive and a super unique production! "Sway (Mucho Mambo)" is a fantastic house tune, I didn't know how good it was for a long time. I think I knew the remix first because German DJ Mellow Trax aka DJ Mellow-D did a Remix titled Mellow Trax vs. Shaft - Sway (Mucho Mumbo) in 2002. I relistened to it just a few days ago but I wasn't really convinced that it had stood the test of time. I clearly prefer the version of Shaft. His "Outa Space" version that is included in this video is very cool.

I finished listening to all the songs I was interested in and now that I checked, amost exactly half of all songs I put into my playlist belong to the EDM genre! So many great dance tunes were released in 1999! ATB did a great remix for "Too Much Rain", while his production for "It's A Fine Day" is still great. Not to forget his updated version for "Killer" and his remix for "The First Rebirth", "Don't Stop" is also a solid tune. Massive year for André. German producer duo Schiller released "Das Glockenspiel" and "Liebesschmerz" and "Ruhe", still really good tunes, while they were also part of the project Trance Allstars, so they did a version of "The First Rebirth" as well which is not too shabby. Scooter had the hard rocking "Call Me Manana" and the even harder pushing "Faster Harder Scooter". I love Lady Tom's "It's a Dream". As well as DJ Icon "Voco Me". Ferry Corsten released "Out Of The Blue" under his System F moniker. One of the biggest surprises to me was that "Flat Beat" by Mr. Oizo hit the #1 spot in Germany and Austria! I mean, it's an instrumental Electro House track from 1999! Wikipedia writes: "Mr. Oizo's "Flat Beat" (1999) has also been considered an early example of the genre." That was three years before Benny Benassi's "Satisfaction" changed the game! Just found a recent upload from DJ Mag where Benny tells his story! I liked Blue Nature's Titanic theme remix called "A Life So Changed". Yeah, cheesy but nice. "Soundtropolis" by the Members of Mayday where also WestBam is involved in. And do you think WestBam was also involved in "Music is the Key"? Yes, of course, together with Dr. Motte! Wow, he was as prestent as ATB in 1999! And I cannot deny "Heut is mein Tag" bei Blümchen - amazing track and so full of energy! Very smooth is "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" by Jam & Spoon. "Turn Around" is one of the few house tracks I actually like and a couple are from around the late 90s and early 00s. I still LOVE the DJ Sakin & Friends songs like "Dragonfly", "Nomansland" and "Protect Your Mind". They sound a bit dated procutionwise but I still love them. Nostalgic. A massive hit was "King of My Castle" in the Roy Malone King Edit. Very cool but the follow-up "You're The Reason" is also very cool. Also considered in the Dance Genre is the 2-Step classic "Sweet Like Chocolate". Sunbeam's "Outside World" is so great. Works great with this space vibe of Central Seven's "Missing" (DJ Mellow-D Radio Edit). Chicane's classic "Saltwater". Eiffel 65's classics "Blue" and "Move Your Body". "Dear Jessie" by Rollergirl. York's smooth "On the Beach" version. Moloko's house "Sing it back" (Boris Radio Edit). Phats & Small did not also make "Turn Around", they did the official single remix for Earth Wind & Fire's "September 1999". Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone" is still massive. Love it! DJ Bobo's best track could be "Together". Love the production, almost sounds like Scooter or something similiar. A lot of his singles I heard until 1995 were more of this solid typical euro-dance style with singing and rapping on a rather low BPM level. But "Together" is full of energy and no rapping. Mark 'Oh released something adult considered his very cheesy-childish singles the years before. "Your Love". "Open Your Eyes" by Nalin & Kane is super good. The remix of Funkstar Deluxe of Bob Marley's "Sun Is Shining" is to me a huge house track. Good vibes only! I LOVE Watergate's "Heart Of Asia", great melody reusing and the main version is remixed by DJ Quicksilver.

After Eiffel 65 started the Italo-Dance wave, the debut single of Prezioso feat. Marvin followed "Tell me why". Still like Mario Lopez' "The Sound Of Nature" and I prefer the Plug'n'Play Video Cut over the also nice original. Moby's "Why Does My Heart" could be considered dance, it's Ambient Pop or so, a classic. Dune's last hurray was "Dark Side Of The Moon", like it. Kai Tracid's massive "Destiny's Path" is sooo good. "Zombie Nation" is hard to ignore, while cheesy, it's a classic. Grew up with that track. No denying "Kiss" by the Vengaboys. Liked also "We're Going To Ibiza". "Luv U More" is a nice follow-up by Rollergirl. I picked two remixes of "The First Rebirth" by ATB and Sunbeam. "Another Way" is a beautiful Paul van Dyk Instrumental, while Sash! still released music with vocals from different languages, Spanish was it on "Adelante". Very cool production. "Was ist Zeit" from Taylor & Flow and the almost futuristic sounding "Doppelgänger" by Niels van Gogh sounds like it comes straight from the 2000s. Plus a couple more I didn't mention. Call me biased. I watched the German Single Charts videos from 1999-1995 (yes, I started in 1999) and the quality drop is enormous. I think something happened between 1997 and 1999. There was a huge leap forward in terms of production quality! Not entirely sure why. Only like 1,2,3,4 years before 1999, you still had tons of stereotypical and very dated sounding Eurodance, then the tons of Eurorap, then you had a phase of high BPM "rave track" like RMB and Blümchen released. All that seemed to have vanished in the year 1999. Yes, of course there is still pop rap and EDM vocal pop but it's quite different than what music was like in just 1-4 years before.
